What do you name your peepz in RPGs?

When I was a kid (uh, age 8 through 22) it was all bad jokes, starting with 4-char names in FF1 "RALF" "BIFF" "DONG" etc and on up to naming them all things like "SHIT!!!" in Chrono Trigger just so all dialogue ended up being like "SHIT!!!, Thank you for saving me."

Now I'm all grown up I think everybody should just sound as if they're from continental Europe. Ernst, Pierre, Maria, etc.

Nobody's going to answer this, are they?

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 2 February 2005 04:20 (twenty years ago)

Clive and Fuck.

Autumn Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 04:22 (twenty years ago)

I always give my characters female names, and female appearances, etc. Usually with serious names like Juliette and crap like that. I don't know why.

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 04:22 (twenty years ago)

Studly McHandsome

Matt Chesnut, Wednesday, 2 February 2005 04:26 (twenty years ago)

heh. i think we had a thread like this.

my usual names are "Beavis", or "Sir Beavis," if I'm feeling special. There's just something special about winning the game and the princess at the end saying "Oh thank you, Beavis! You have saved Hyrule from Ganon! The children will be singing the praises of Beavis for generations etc etc etc"

Since I couldn't port my BG2 character into Neverwinter Nights like i thought i could, I made a "Hijo De Beavis" instead.

I tend to rename my characters depending on how much they annoy me during the game. Eventually, Beavis is saving the world accompanied by "Whiney McTittays", "Big Tongue Dude", "Felch Clackamas", "Spike Jonez", and "Random Blonde #251"

Frogman Henry, Wednesday, 2 February 2005 04:38 (twenty years ago)

sometimes i named them after famous crackers (humble guys, inc, etc) as tribute. i think i named a bunch of characters "raistlin".

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 04:42 (twenty years ago)

Well on this time through for FF Tactics, hopefully this'll be the last time I try to complete this timesucking bastard game, I've gone and named the main character Hansel and given him Owen Wilson's birthday. It's all about identifying with your heroes, man.

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 2 February 2005 04:43 (twenty years ago)

I usually leave the characters' names as default the first time through, and if I play the game through again I give them vulgar elementary schoolyard type names based on their appearance and stuff.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 04:46 (twenty years ago)

Icewind Dale, first attempt:

wizard dude: Ol' Billy Widdershins
busty cleric: Hotty McTitslick
guess: Zippy the Ranger
thief: Runta McShortstuff
other random fighter/cleric: Huratia Yurlipha
paladin leader dude: Hiro Protagonist

Kingfish MuffMiner 2049er (Kingfish), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 04:47 (twenty years ago)

I went through a dark period in middle school of naming female characters after girls I had crushes on, but once you're older than 12 that gets kind of extremely creepy.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 04:48 (twenty years ago)

I was a very serious little boy and didn't want to ruin the gravity of the game by giving my characters joke names. "Roman" was a common one, and "Steele".

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 04:53 (twenty years ago)

i like how you thre win spike jones.

i usually name things, unexpectedly, after myself.

Also Hiro Protagonist. I wish I could remember what I called my FFVII characters second time through.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 11:46 (twenty years ago)

Currently I'm rocking WoW with Ghradilen and Dexness (note to people who've known me for almost 10 years now; this was to easily identify myself to a RL friend in the game). My KOTORII character is named something like Draxxt D'Hatten (no Icewind Dale influence THERE).

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 14:23 (twenty years ago)

In college we named them after textbooks and textbooks authors, like OH PASCAL! and A HISTORY OF THE ARAB PEOPLES and Thomas Merton.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 16:31 (twenty years ago)

haha Oh Pascal!!!! I saw that book once

I went through a dark period in middle school of naming female characters after girls I had crushes on, but once you're older than 12 that gets kind of extremely creepy.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 18:55 (twenty years ago)

I also liked to use as many unecessary Qs, Zs, and Xs as possible. I think one of my most successful characters in any D&D campaign of my youth was named something like QIXOXIZ.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 18:57 (twenty years ago)

When I first played Earthbound (at age 9, I think), I named Ness after me, and Paula after my brother (just to insult him). It got awkward when I realized that they fell in love in the game.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Wednesday, 2 February 2005 22:12 (twenty years ago)

These days when I play console RPGs I just keep the default names; it saves confusion.

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 2 February 2005 22:17 (twenty years ago)

i played FFVII as Donkeynards once.

When I played FF9 I named all my chars "HAM!", including exclamation point. only entertaining thing about the game

Monday At Bernie's (Adrian Langston), Thursday, 3 February 2005 00:59 (twenty years ago)

i renamed the black/blue wizard thing in FF9 "Orko"

Kingfish MuffMiner 2049er (Kingfish), Thursday, 3 February 2005 01:02 (twenty years ago)

And so far on WoW I'm having more fun naming new characters than anything else (Cankles, Fistulapril, Gynobomb, Flowbee, Anncoulter, Chingaling, Ambienattakk)

Monday At Bernie's (Adrian Langston), Thursday, 3 February 2005 01:05 (twenty years ago)

When I played FF9 I named all my chars "HAM!", including exclamation point. only entertaining thing about the game

this is fucking hilarious to me. and OTM. But I might be thinking of another one instead of 9, I get them all blurred together anyway.

TOMBOT, Thursday, 3 February 2005 01:11 (twenty years ago)

Nine was the back to the old school, Blue mages & Princesses & superdeformed one, after the prep school horror of Eight. I hope that it was an intentional joke that all the thin pretty kids in eight wqere completley interchangable at high level.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 3 February 2005 01:15 (twenty years ago)

I am sort of awestruck that people use joke names, still! Do y'all hate CHEESY STORYLINES? (although tylero's detroit techno group becomes total genius with the pictures revelation)

[Default names or back-to-basics-I-love-Darklands-me-plausibly-mideval shit like "John" or "Noel" or "Ralph", here] (except in Japanese stuff where go with hunches, y'know? "Yii" or "Prinn" or something)

man i wish i could remember what i used for my first plays of the big hitter rpgs. i know my first playthru of FF6, on SNES9X circa 1999, was rife with anime characters - terra was "asuka" for sure. locke was "ferio," a similar-seeming rogueish hero from magic knight rayearth. but it was a mishmash - gau was "gurgi" from the prydain books. hmmm. maybe i can find them discussed in an ICQ chat log or something. i wasn't the kind of kid that went with dirty words ever but i really wonder what i would have used for FF1 when i was 10...

Relm = Ursula (for the teenaged artist in Kiki's Delivery Service)
Setzer = Ferrio (thief in Magic Knight Rayearth - so not sure what Locke was now)
Mog = Mokona (cutesy creature in Magic Knight Rayearth)

kinda lamer than i was hoping tbh, not one evangelion character among them. but this was april of 1998 and i'm not sure how deep i'd gotten into eva by that point.

The last game of CoC I played in, the Keeper and I were hacked off with a couple of other players (one in particular) who had ruined the last game and we kind of wanted them to move on and find another group. In a completely dickish pass-agg move I played a Margaret Rutherford type called Lady Agatha Cholmondley-Cholmondley-Cholmondley-Cholmondley-Featherstonehaugh who insisted on being called by her full name at all times because it was the most polite thing to do.

I literally loled. This is so true to my experience. A bunch of adolescents with no social skills. Instead of calmly telling people in the group that you were not having fun anymore and perhaps it was best if you went your separate ways, you channeled your unhappiness into in-game beef.
