How long do you let empties pile up (if you do at all)?

They've been here a while. There are 215 of them.
And the only thing getting me off my ass to return them is the fact that I've sold my car and only have a few more days to do stuff in it.

Empty whats?
Victories.
(real answer is beer)

Two days max.
That's not even enough time to pile up!

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 04:39 (twenty years ago)

exactly

kate/papa november (papa november), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 04:41 (twenty years ago)

Here in my locality the council provides a receptacle for recyclable bottles and collects them every week. So, uh, 7 days.

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 04:41 (twenty years ago)

Interesting.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 04:43 (twenty years ago)

Ever since NY outlawed recycling and then suddenly reinstituted it, I stopped recycling. Thank god cos empties were like WHOA prior to that.

Can you return empties for the deposit anywhere else in the world besides Canada?

215 is a lot, but it's not that many. As a rule of thumb, I never used to take them back unless I could roll them over into a free case. A "2-4" was going for about $35-36 when I was home last time, so you've still got a little way to go.

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 04:52 (twenty years ago)

there was a dark period mid last year where i had nearly three months of empties in my kitchen. which, if you know how much i drink, is an utter fuckload. there must have been over 300 bottles there.

the surface noise (slight return) (electricsound), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 04:55 (twenty years ago)

I never made it to 2-4 levels of returnage. Oh well life goes on.

xpost Well done, sir.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 04:56 (twenty years ago)

the worst is when i go to my best friend's housem, she can drink cases upon cases of beer so the empties can be stacked up like ceiling high at times.

Allyzay Highlights The Fallacy of Radiohead (allyzay), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 04:57 (twenty years ago)

That sounds dangerous.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 05:00 (twenty years ago)

The 2-4 level of returnage takes a group of dedicated people to achieve. Also, I was living in a student house with 3 other guys and we entertained often. We actually made a couch and table just put some of the empty cases to good use and get them out of the way until we could take them back. The guys at the Beer Store used to get a laugh whenever we rolled up with 2 or 3 carloads full.

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 05:02 (twenty years ago)

dude, if you don't throw them out, MOLD starts growing inside the bottles. Can't you smell that shit? I can smell the festering mold after like a week's worth of empties piled up.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 05:16 (twenty years ago)

I think Michigan has the US's highest deposit return -- .10 / bottle/can. One time when I was a senior in high school and my parents had gone away for the weekend, I had this total John Hughes-movie type party at my house. It was insane. Hundreds of high school kids drinking tons and tons of beer. I caught big time hell for it too, but I'll never forget gathering up all those empties the next day and taking them back to Meijer Thrifty Acres for the deposit. I had like -- no shit -- $70 worth of bottles and cans...

Stormy Davis (diamond), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 05:19 (twenty years ago)

"dude, if you don't throw them out, MOLD starts growing inside the bottles. Can't you smell that shit?"

A little mould is inevitable, but that's why you RINSE the bottles before putting them back in their cases. It's a bit of a pain-in-the-ass, but it beats the alternative.

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 05:25 (twenty years ago)

you could sterilise them and fill them with homebrew, thereby proving the empties have a purpose

gem (trisk), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 05:26 (twenty years ago)

WHO SAYS "EMPTIES"?! WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS WORD?! IT SUCKS! I'VE NEVER HEARD THIS WORD IN MY LIFE!

El Janko (JasonD), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 05:40 (twenty years ago)

"ILX - expands your vocabulary in new and upsetting ways"

Matt (Matt), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 09:55 (twenty years ago)

"dude, if you don't throw them out, MOLD starts growing inside the bottles. Can't you smell that shit?"
They've been there months (I think since late summer) - no smell or fruit flies or anything. I just make sure that there's no beer sitting at the bottom.

Jason, "empties" does not suck. Try working the word into a conversation today and you'll see what a great, liberating word it truly is.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 15:14 (twenty years ago)

at this household there is wall to wall empty cans

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 15:16 (twenty years ago)

How many cans must I stack up, to wash you out from my mind? Out of my consciousness?

Coul Soughing (nickalicious), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 15:25 (twenty years ago)

WHO SAYS "EMPTIES"?!

I totally knew this was a Canadian thread, because really, who the fuck else knows what "empties" means? If you really wanted to confuse em, Thermo, you should have said how many 2-4s of empties you had, and how many of them were stubbies.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 15:48 (twenty years ago)

I knew what this meant -- then again upstate new york is basically Canada

One to two weeks, generally.

RS £aRue (rockist_scientist), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 16:25 (twenty years ago)

(Is this only about empty beer bottles? I generally don't drink beer or other booze.)
