Ohhh, so that's what people meant in high school when they told me I was "just like Ducky". I thought it translated to: "you are really annoying" but it actually translated to "you are a total gaytard". Or could they have meant it both ways?

just blew my mind when i found out James Spader's gf in this ("Benny") was played by the same actress who played Ellen Tigh on Battlestar Galactica (Kate Vernon.)
― nomar, Sunday, 10 September 2017 17:05 (eight years ago)
has it been established for certain yet that the original ending which has her pick Ducky was in fact never filmed? I feel like I've seen both claims: that it was filmed and tested poorly so they reshot it; and that it was never filmed or tested, but written that way, then changed.
― akm, Sunday, 10 September 2017 21:09 (eight years ago)
It was filmed, because they had to go back some months later to shoot the other ending (that's why McCarthy looks some different--he was playing a WW1 soldier in a play, and had lost weight and drastically cut his hair, so he wore an obvious wig for the reshoot).

It seems like a version of the original ending is on the DVD.
― to fly across the city and find Aerosmith's car (C. Grisso/McCain), Sunday, 10 September 2017 21:33 (eight years ago)
it's not. it was promised and then didn't show up and people were pissed. but then I heard that this ending maybe didn't even exist.
― akm, Sunday, 10 September 2017 21:55 (eight years ago)
or, it wasn't 'promised', but the DVD press made it sound like it was there, and it wasn't.
i watched this for the first time last night, not really what I was expecting! kinda really loved it?????

I used to think "Some Kind of Wonderful" was the best of the batch (vs Sixteen Candles or Pretty In Pink. Or I guess even Breakfast Club? That seems like a different sort of movie.). But I haven't seen any of them in a while. Oh, wait, I think I did see Sixteen Candles not long ago, and it ... didn't hold up. I was also surprised at how much not PG stuff there was for a PG movie, including a gratuitous nude scene!

Jon Cryer swears that Duckie wasn't gay.
― brooklyn suicide cult (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 2 April 2020 01:27 (five years ago)
agree that SKoW is the best of the Hugheses that ive seen
― brooklyn suicide cult (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 2 April 2020 01:28 (five years ago)
Best overall Hughes soundtrack, SKoW, too. Other movies have their definite highlights: "Don't You (Forget About Me)", "This Woman's Work", "Beat City", "Oh Yeah", "Pretty in Pink", but for me, that's the one that gels best as a whole.
― the body of a spider... (scampering alpaca), Thursday, 2 April 2020 12:52 (five years ago)
The character does not appear to be gay. He is obsessed with one woman and at the end is happy to go off with another, and he shows no sexual interest in any male during the film.
― the pinefox, Thursday, 2 April 2020 12:57 (five years ago)
That doesn't mean the film isn't queer. Plenty of films have men who show no interest in each other yet read as plausibly queer.
― TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 2 April 2020 13:10 (five years ago)
but bcz he is played by Jon Cryer, he comes off as (per the actor himself) "slightly effeminate"
― brooklyn suicide cult (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 2 April 2020 13:46 (five years ago)
Favorite JH by far. Can prob recite most of the dialogue. ALS otm regarding the Duckman and it is def the best soundtrack though SKoW is a very close second.
― Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Thursday, 2 April 2020 15:59 (five years ago)
whether or not Ducky is gay doesn't really figure into whether or not its a good film imo. The plot mechanics of Andie picking the rich douchebag don't make sense, that's its biggest failing.
― Οὖτις, Thursday, 2 April 2020 16:05 (five years ago)
I suppose one could argue that Andie *knows* Ducky is gay - even though Ducky does not - and is thus sparing them the embarrassment and heartbreak. But I don't think it really plays that way (even if Ringwald and Cryer's actual opinions mirror this reading; Ringwald thinks Ducky is gay, Cryer does not)
― Οὖτις, Thursday, 2 April 2020 16:06 (five years ago)
also to be considered: Blaine is boring and bland, obviously Andie is his "manic pixie dream girl", making their whole dynamic p gross.
― Οὖτις, Thursday, 2 April 2020 16:08 (five years ago)
I'm of that age where Hughes' ouevre were formative movies for me, but increasingly in retrospect I feel like his films had an outsize impact because there was literally *nothing* else to fill that void for pre-teens/teens of the time. The audience was eager for films that reflected teenage realities of the day - hyper-stylized and idealized as they may have been they were recognizable as being grounded in white suburban 80s teen culture, and there weren't a million other movies, streaming channels, tv shows, etc. doing this. But when I go back and watch them now they're for the most part very embarassing, their politics are execrable, the conservatism and sexism and racism really grate.
― Οὖτις, Thursday, 2 April 2020 16:12 (five years ago)
"Some Kind of Wonderful" is the only Hughes teenager film i have NOT seen. maybe i'll fix that tonight.
― Karl Malone, Thursday, 2 April 2020 16:14 (five years ago)
(damn, pretty sad anecdote for Eric Stoltz: "Originally cast as Marty McFly for Back to the Future in late 1984, he was replaced with Michael J. Fox after about a month of filming.")
― Karl Malone, Thursday, 2 April 2020 16:16 (five years ago)
conservatism? one of the reasons I liked pretty in pink was the totally not subtle commentary on classist bullshit
