The thread for enthusing over Peruvian cuisine.

My father and I have started reguarly getting dinner at a Peruvian restaurant fairly near my apartment. This is certainly some of the most unique cuisine I've encountered. My favorites are the seafood stew parihuela and of course ceviche, which is lots of seafood marinated/pickled in lime juice and spices. Absolutely delicious. Papas rellenas, which I tried tonight for the first time, was also great. Mashed potato orbs stuffed with hard-boiled egg, beef and onion. Very very very very delicious.

Does anyone have recommendations for the next time I/we go?

Lomo saltado!

You can never have too much stir-fried french fries

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Thursday, 3 February 2005 02:55 (twenty years ago)

The place is called Chimu, and it's excellent. My dad & I used to go to a place in Queens called La Perla, but it has closed.

good rotisserie chicken there...
nice one @ 90th & 2ndish too

autovac (autovac), Thursday, 3 February 2005 05:12 (twenty years ago)

coco roco on fifth avenue in park slope is delicious. there's one on 13th between 1st and a, but it's kind of mediocore although they serve pisco sours.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 3 February 2005 10:45 (twenty years ago)

That Peruvian-style rotisserie chicken is amazing. On the west side of Manhattan, I get it at Flor de Mayo w/cilantro-blasted green rice.

lauren, fifth & what?

Ian John50n (orion), Thursday, 3 February 2005 20:47 (twenty years ago)

Fried yucca with plenty aji.

Every good tourist has to tell you about the cuy.

I do like that Peruvian last supper painting with the cuy in the middle, though.

There is a Peruvian place not too far away from me; I've always wanted to check it out.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 3 February 2005 22:20 (twenty years ago)

Here.

I have been wanting to try Chimu but I looked at their menu and it looks like it does not really have any veggie options for those that would be my b'lyn dining companions. maybe they should start serving inside Union Pool.

I am blessed to live a long block or two away from the mighty fine Inka Grill, a ridiculously great local chain of Peruvian eatery yum. I was with Elvis T. when he first tasted the lomo saltado there and proclaimed it Of the Good.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 3 February 2005 22:23 (twenty years ago)

The one in Chicago is called, helpfully, Taste of Peru.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 3 February 2005 22:23 (twenty years ago)

I love those cheese covered potatoes, what are they called- papas a la huancaina?

Ken L (Ken L), Thursday, 3 February 2005 22:25 (twenty years ago)

Damn I want an Inka Grill here.

The two "Peruvian" places I've been here sucked.

Hunter (Hunter), Thursday, 3 February 2005 22:42 (twenty years ago)

Inka Dinka Doo!

Ken L (Ken L), Thursday, 3 February 2005 22:47 (twenty years ago)

Best Peruvian in the NYC area can be found in Passaic, NJ. there's a strip of Peruvian/Mexican/Ecuadorian restaurants right off Main Ave. there. They're all excellent. I'm a fan of ceviche and chaufa (fried rice Chinese -style, but better) and jalea (giant mound of fried shrimp, calamari, fish and cassava topped with red onions and coriander).

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Thursday, 3 February 2005 23:16 (twenty years ago)

Don't know that one. But what about that place in Park Slope, Coco Roco? Or the one on Broome Street -is that still there?

Ken L (Ken L), Thursday, 3 February 2005 23:30 (twenty years ago)

Inspired by this thread I had Inka Grill's lomo saltado this evening. A WINNER IS ME.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 4 February 2005 02:01 (twenty years ago)

DAMNNNNNNNNN

I want some Peruvian food now, too! Ned, do you know of any good Peruvian places on the westside of LA?

Site Admistrator (deangulberry), Friday, 4 February 2005 02:03 (twenty years ago)

We need either Elvis or Spencer to chime in! Alas I don't know any -- though there IS some ridiculously good Argentinian empanadas place on the other side of the 405 from Bergamot Station or thereabouts.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 4 February 2005 02:18 (twenty years ago)

The 405 or the 10?

Site Admistrator (deangulberry), Friday, 4 February 2005 02:20 (twenty years ago)

Ned, do you know of any good Peruvian places on the westside of LA?

*sniff* no one asked me...

Nothing really on the westside, but I can certainly recommend Mario's on Melrose.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Friday, 4 February 2005 02:21 (twenty years ago)

xpost I remember it being *right* near the 405, like just to the east, but damned if I can remember the exact cross-streets. Was right next to a liquor store. Chris, you'd remember, what is that spot?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 4 February 2005 02:21 (twenty years ago)

though there IS some ridiculously good Argentinian empanadas place on the other side of the 405 from Bergamot Station or thereabouts.

That would be Empanada's Place on Sawtelle just S of Venice Blvd.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Friday, 4 February 2005 02:22 (twenty years ago)

Bergamot Station is next to the 10, pretty far West of the 405...

Site Admistrator (deangulberry), Friday, 4 February 2005 02:22 (twenty years ago)

(above was xp)

Okay! I've seen that place. I always wondered if it was good. Thanks!

Site Admistrator (deangulberry), Friday, 4 February 2005 02:23 (twenty years ago)

Bergamot Station is next to the 10, pretty far West of the 405...

Allow me my dreams!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 4 February 2005 02:37 (twenty years ago)

guinea pig

A Nairn (moretap), Friday, 4 February 2005 04:22 (twenty years ago)

god, i'd meant to check out Empanada's Place for soooooo many years when i lived in LA. i used to pass it all the time and the few times i tried to actually go there, it was closed :(

is it really good?

The Ballad of El Janko (JasonD), Friday, 4 February 2005 05:50 (twenty years ago)

Very, very good.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 4 February 2005 05:53 (twenty years ago)

Is El Pollo Inka any good? It seems more of a fast food outlet, but there's one in West LA.
