BustED! Maybe everyone already knew this about picture threads...

But it's probably worth mentioning again ...

Looking at large picture threads (like What do you look like) where the images are all hosted on different servers all over the world, may raise some concern in your IT department at work. I got a call this morning that I had hit 600 web servers in a 30 second period. Guess I hadn't thought about it.... obviously, having someone poking around trying to figure out why is not a desirable thing.

This is why it's advisable to ILX with images off.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 3 February 2005 21:42 (twenty years ago)

I guess it would help to turn off images while at work?

600 web servers in a 30 second period
We can do better than that!

No no, this is good advice really, thank you for bringing it up!

Just say "hey, I was looking at hundreds of internet strangers in their underwear". Your boss will understand.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 3 February 2005 21:55 (twenty years ago)

Oh, well hell yeah, NEVER host pics on your WORK server space for ilx threads! Dear fucking lord no!

i became aware of this after the 'paint record covers from memory' thing. i turned off images straight after a very curt email from our group security department.

The Tape-Op message board is a bummer... it's bright yellow and has the words "MESSAGE BOARD" in a giant font across the top... not so great for work either.

Turning images off is the shit. Do it.

When yer logged in, click on the "settings" link @ the top right. scroll down, and there's a setting for not displaying images! I always have images switched off, much easier and quicker to read the board.

The big fear should really be random "funny" pics off of google's image search -- open a thread with images on, and you might, say, magically log a hit to naz1-porn.al-qaeda.net.

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 3 June 2005 16:38 (twenty years ago)

It'll be a picture of a kitten, too. Only that's the cute "before" picture; in the "after" the kitten's strapped with an explosive vest and whipping a tied-up Japanese woman.

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 3 June 2005 16:40 (twenty years ago)

no shit .. that's happened to me too .. although it's the spidering that gets noticed by the network admins...

geyser muffler and a quarter (Dave225), Friday, 3 June 2005 16:42 (twenty years ago)

You'll hit fewer image servers if you have it set to display only last X posts.

Ian John50n (orion), Friday, 3 June 2005 18:45 (twenty years ago)

Thank yew!

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 3 June 2005 18:45 (twenty years ago)

Thanks so much, dave! I had no idea. Now tell me about these spiders...

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 3 June 2005 18:57 (twenty years ago)

They crawl all over the place.
