- at a house party a few weeks back. two good friends of mine are sitting on the couch, and a casual acquaintance of ours is dozing off beside them. the casual acquaintance suddenly starts snapping and whining that they're not giving him enough room, and a heated exchange ensues. eventually, it dies down, and the casual acquaintance goes to sleep. while he lies there, my two friends go on a SPITTING spree - they spit on his coat, his walkman - they even land one in his hair. he was obviously not pleased when he woke up, but they'd gone home by then. they have yet to come face-to-face since.
- my aunt's husband is a wealthy argentinian man, former politician. he had a stroke a couple of years ago, which has left him without the power of speech and his movement is slow. my aunt refuses to believe that his mind was damaged or affected though, but lately his behaviour has become...bizarre and violent. 5 or 6 times a day he will turn violent, spitting and hitting and kicking people - and he's indiscriminate - his wife, elderly relatives, his nurse maid, visitors. he's pretty immobile, but he can still hit with reasonable force.
- no spitting thread would be complete without a mention for the spitting footballer el hadj diouf. why is it that his spitting is greeted with greater revulsion than more physical acts of violence? why does spitting have a reputation as being cowardly?
Have you ever spat on someone?

At my elementary school in about 4th grade (we were all about 10), spitting suddenly became the cool thing to do. I think it was mostly that it was an irreverent "tough guy" thing to do on the playground, at least in a 10-year-old's head. The teachers' aides HATED us for it, so we just spat spat spat all over the blacktop every day for a couple of weeks.

Doesn't every 10-year-old boy go through that phase?
This may have totally been a Wisconsin thing, but when I was in middle school it was a big thing for the bully types to "gleek" on the uncool kids. It was "gleeking" when you'd walk by someone and make a very small, thin string of spit launch off your tongue onto someone else. I could never do it.
(FAKE EDIT: googled the term as I was typing this and yes, it really does exist and I didn't make it up!)

I thought gleeking was an involuntary light spray of saliva -- it happens to me sometimes when I yawn.

Maybe that is the more traditional definition, I only ever heard it in terms of it being done very purposefully to someone else.
