Nate's wild night out

Went to a show at the Minnesota Museum of Modern Art, mostly on not-staying-in-another-Friday-night-dammit impulse. Paid $7 to not see the Melodious Owls because the door time (7 PM) was approximately TWO FULL HOURS before opening act came on. Since I came alone, I basically did the following:

1) drank a screwdriver
2) tried to look interesting and conversation-worthy
2.5) failed
3) realized that in 90 minutes, the only song the DJ played that I even recognized was the Clash's "Spanish Bombs". Everything else was MOR indie-kid doodoo
4) realized I was the only person in the entire place wearing a hat of any type
5) Left my hat back at the coat check, then went back to the bathroom and realized that my hair looked laughably awful, stringy and patchy and all that
6) Became very aware of the fact that I was probably 6-10 years older than most of the show attendees
7) Watched some giggly asshole kids throw snowballs off a balcony onto the parking lot below; briefly considered approaching them furiously and yelling "that was MY car you little shithead" but didn't know if it would be worth finding out the best way to follow up the confrontation with a friendly "ha ha just kidding". Point was made moot by a vaguely down's-ish looking security guard accosting the kids before I could.
8) Glowered at all the kids with their 130 pound frames and Conor Oberst hair and white belts and garish tracksuit jackets, fully aware that my Sonic Youth shirt and my $40 post-Xmas-discount leather Born sneakers were basically feigned fingerpokes at stylishness
9) Decided that I should probably get my hair reduced to a layer of fuzz, since I will never, ever be able to pull off bangs again
10) Went the fuck home

Yeah. Futility.

i am really drunk. is minnesota nice? i am thinking of places to live when i graduate (or go to grad school(.

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Saturday, 5 February 2005 05:16 (twenty years ago)

There is an alleged statewide personality phenomenon referred to as "Minnesota Nice". Outside the state, people like to call it "being passive-aggressive".

People bitch about our winters but it hasn't been horrible this year, save a few weeks in December and early January. Summers kick fucking ass. But watching baseball under a stained tarpaulin is lame as fuck.

Stupornaut (natepatrin), Saturday, 5 February 2005 05:20 (twenty years ago)

I'm soweee. If it's any consolation, there's another human being indoors on a friday (weekends are for amateurs donchya know. at least that's what i tell myself) night staring at the 'puter.

mouse (mouse), Saturday, 5 February 2005 05:20 (twenty years ago)

i HATe passive-aggressive. i can handle any winter.

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Saturday, 5 February 2005 05:21 (twenty years ago)

It's like 50 degrees Fahrenheit these days WTF!
We went out and didn't do anything but walk around downtown and didn't go to the Frogs show cause my brother's under 21. We went to Block E and saw lots of insanely well-dressed people waiting in line to get into Escape Ultra Lounge and my wife got a fruit smoothy. We saw a fat middle -aged guy dancing outside the club called "Drink" (which is always totally packed) to the amusement of the many people pressed against the inside of the window.
Yo my night is demonstrably suckier than yours Nate but it was also fun so therefore you must have had fun too Nate QED. OHHHHH SNAP.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Saturday, 5 February 2005 09:24 (twenty years ago)

That doesn't sound much phun, Nate.

Here is my night of sucktion:

1/the covers band I play in is booked to play a pub in the we're a posh area, but haha we're really living in a run down shithole town I grew up in (Boldon, Tyne & Wear)

2/ the gig coincides w/a football match featuring Sund3rland Assocaition football club, who are popular in this town.

2a the match is being televised, and shown at the pub
2b the management inform us that we cannot go on until the match has finished

3/ the match is a 1-1 draw, and goes on forever, so we go back to the drummer's house.
3a the drummer wishes to show us all his new dream th34t3r dvd. More on this later, perhaps.

4/ we get back, late, go on, and play like shit, and no-body likes us.

5/I get home at 1.30am

the end.

upsides:
1/I had a tasty pizza
2/nobody from my old school was there
3/our moron neighbours hadn't been playing loud music

What a waste of an evening.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 5 February 2005 10:36 (twenty years ago)

& in case you're wondering, yes, I sat through about 1 1/2hrs of dream theater last night.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 5 February 2005 10:37 (twenty years ago)

im working today, i stayed in and watched shadow of a doubt

charltonlido (gareth), Saturday, 5 February 2005 11:00 (twenty years ago)

I went to see the Arcade Fire and David Byrne showed up and they did "This Must Be The Place." I thought I saw David Bowie up front and turned behind me to say "hey I think that's David Bowie" to the nerdy guy behind me and it turned out it was Spike Jonze! I ended up getting a drink with him and Karen Orzolek, who kept grabbing my leg. They're kinda stupid but it was cool and they paid for my drinks, plus the video he's doing for LCD Soundsystem sounds really fucking cool. I got home kind of late and my wife was all pissed off and shit but I was like bitch when I get you on the red carpet you better remember this and she was like omg you stud and we fucked till dawn.

miccio (miccio), Saturday, 5 February 2005 16:00 (twenty years ago)

that story was so beautiful :(((((

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Saturday, 5 February 2005 16:46 (twenty years ago)

There are two possibilities here:

1) Miccio is lying
2) Miccio needs a kick in the jimmy

Stupornaut (natepatrin), Saturday, 5 February 2005 18:12 (twenty years ago)

charltonlido (gareth), Saturday, 5 February 2005 18:24 (twenty years ago)

phil-two (phil-two), Saturday, 5 February 2005 18:28 (twenty years ago)

leeds! i was going to go to brighton to see em, but they came here instead, which was nice of em.

i dont think i will say anything to magda because i am too scared to talk to the "stars" on stage generally. is she richie hawtins girlfriend? my friend went to see hawtin and villalobos at fabric and said magda was better than either of them.

ambrose (ambrose), Saturday, 5 February 2005 18:58 (twenty years ago)

er, we all went to that too!

charltonlido (gareth), Saturday, 5 February 2005 19:01 (twenty years ago)

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Saturday, 5 February 2005 19:03 (twenty years ago)

phil-two (phil-two), Saturday, 5 February 2005 19:07 (twenty years ago)

Ha, when I got home I watched the first hour of Glengarry Glen Ross

Stupornaut (natepatrin), Saturday, 5 February 2005 19:16 (twenty years ago)

i fell asleep early and had a dream that i was some kind of microscopic entity that could fly, and i possessed a full range of senses EXCEPT for feeling. since no one could see or hear me, i became party to TOP SECRET INFORMATION about things like domestic and international policy, white-collar crime, etc. the cia caught on and sent some goons out to catch me and determine what i was and what i knew. they never found me.

also, this whole dream was framed as a movie done from my POV. the camera spared the audiences nothing -- i got to hide inside characters' bodies, inner space-style, behind paintings, inside toilets, so for an entire scene viewers would get to see/hear my POV from the inside of a toilet.

oskar shindig! (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 5 February 2005 19:26 (twenty years ago)

oh thats what the guy in brighton told me who was putting them on

i cant remember why i missed that fabric night, probably some lame reason. wasnt it packed?

ambrose (ambrose), Saturday, 5 February 2005 19:33 (twenty years ago)

My program put on a kalaoke night, and I made a spectacle of myself, which was quite invigorating, which I felt compelled to do because otherwise I wasn't enjoying myself -- all my friends seemed interested in talking to other people, and I had to get attention somehow. Of course, they all went off paired with someone else, and all this happened in proximity to the ongoing tragicomic saga of me and my complete inability to be in the same room with my crush. So I went home and didn't do any of the things that could've cheered me up, because I had vague feelings of responsibility to schoolwork. Then I ambushed someone in my dorm with my troubles.

And today is bright and sunny and not only do I have no one to share it with, I'll be in a library falling asleep instead.

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Saturday, 5 February 2005 19:36 (twenty years ago)

Whoo! It's Mardi Gras! I had three Bloody Marys for breakfast!

adam (adam), Saturday, 5 February 2005 20:05 (twenty years ago)

I started the night at this art show thing in costa mesa... i had expected it to be just tiny and in a store or something but it turned out the address was to a gigantic wherehouse and was part of that Beautiful Losers exhibit and they had free booze some almost decent music and a skate ramp in the back at which i took many great photos... then we went to another bar that's wonderful when we go there on tuesdays but not so great on friday because you have to wait to get in and once you get inside you get annoyed at how the dj plays games with the records ALWAYS by playing jsbx, then some 60's blues thing, then some robert johnson track, then Scissor Sisters then 70's bee-gees then 60's bee-gees, etc etc et-fucking-c, and anyone, you don't even recognize anyone there and figure, hmmm... maybe time to find a new haunt... so then we met up with some other friends and one of them, rob, says to my friend meghan that her boots are hideous...it's the first thing he says and it's the first time he's seen her since he used to date her 4 years ago.
so i feel very awkward about the whole thing and just try to get everyone laughing about it-- i will later stab rob because he will have ruined the night by the time i'm really drunk. so we go to another bar that we hear has a really awesome soul night and it's supposed to be this huge dance party. when we get there no one is at the bar, like... 5 people... and a bar with modern appointments that's empty on a friday night is a truly desolate and depressing place... and they're playing the pixies, not soul-- people are playing the pixies too much lately, i mean i like em and all, but... so it's dead and we decide to go to a party in LA but then the friends that we've told to come up to this bar get there and they're kinda pissed at how dead it is because they drove 40 minutes... so we ask what they wanna do they don't know anything so we decide to go to a strip club nearby, as they've never been. fwiw, my girlfriend suggested this. all night we watched horse-faced women with wrinkles, absurdly high shoes and too much makeup gyarate to the most boring shit ever. so i feel bad because they've never been to one before and probably never will go again. plus there was a cover charge. when all the sudden "drop it like it's hot" comes on, out of the blue, and the first hot girl of the night comes out... i turn to my friend rob and tell him that i'm going to buy a lapdance with this girl for my friend padra, as he clearly thinks this girl's hot, whatever. rob says cool... i go to take a piss and when i get back rob is getting a dance with her... i figure whatever even though the idea of two people from the same table getting a dance with one girl is somehow not quite right, and i'm a little pissed. and a lot of the other kind of pissed. i've had far too much to drink so maybe that's why i wound up so mad by the end of the night. but at this point it's 1AM and they've already done last call. for the next hour rob receives dances from this girl, totally unconcerned that i had intended to get padra a dance. for some reason i ended the night fuming. i mean, there's etiquette even in a strip club right? perhaps especially in a strip club? by the end of the night there's five minutes left and he actually has the nerve to come outside and say to me, hey-- there's still time for one dance if you want to get it for him. i'm pretty sure he tipped her poorly too. so i stabbed him. or i should have anyway. what a waste of a night out.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Saturday, 5 February 2005 21:04 (twenty years ago)

firstworldman (firstworldman), Saturday, 5 February 2005 21:05 (twenty years ago)

left work to go to bar for coworker sendoff. head to other coworker/friend's house and play Super Monkey Ball with him & him girlfriend. we left there to go see "The Incredibles" which has finally hit the cheapie theaters. get home to waste time online, and sleep. have dream involving the dorm i lived for two years in set in the world of Half-Life 2. Resistance fighters were using the steam tunnels to move and strike around campus until the evil invading overlords sealed them all off.

note: the phrase "Suppression Field" should not show up in your dreams

Kingfish MuffMiner 2049er (Kingfish), Saturday, 5 February 2005 21:22 (twenty years ago)

I started the night at this art show thing in costa mesa...

Dude, there was your problem right there! Because I wasn't around. ;-) (Up in LA watching The Nomi Song with Arthur and many fine folk, had a blast, had a meal, slept. And picked up The Great Destroyer and The Real New Fall LP from Amoeba for six bucks so it was a good night out.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 5 February 2005 21:25 (twenty years ago)

mookieproof (mookieproof), Saturday, 5 February 2005 21:29 (twenty years ago)

I went to edinburgh and met tim finney. we walked around and talked a lot, about rockism, m.i.a., CBDs, 'don't cross the streams!' &c. a variety of topics anyway. it was a really great day, actually. drank some coffee (london has kinda broke tim and he was coughing fierce!) (get well soon!), watched some 'sideways', laughed at the cinema's adverts. then I went to glasgow and hung out w/ally c & ors. fr a small while (i.e. one can of coke). I went home and stop off at the pub. we talked about the capital of chad ('it starts with a j!'), frozen jets of glycerine & coffer dams, and a variety of other subjects, drinking budweiser out of pint glasses.
