The most open championship ever? Just some large men running into each other for fun? Someone must be watching.

Ally C (Ally C), Saturday, 5 February 2005 16:05 (twenty-one years ago)

First off: a cracker. The best Scotland performance for a good couple of years, eventually losing out to a couple of questionable decisions by the officials and an unquestionably stupid piece of play by Simon Danielli. I suspect my cries of 'What the fuck is he DOING?!' were echoed around many households and pubs north of the border. The French looked terrified, for a moment, but not long enough.

Oh well, at least we weren't embarrassing as usual. I'm encouraged, for once.

Wales vs England, 5.30pm. Should be good!

Ally C (Ally C), Saturday, 5 February 2005 16:09 (twenty-one years ago)

This was good, though you probably heard my cries of frustration at the Ally Hogg decision across the Clyde. Ditto with Danielli's stupid "heroics" or whatever he was doing.

I heard France quoted at 100-1 on this morning, I spent some time this afternoon regretting not putting some money on Scotland (though maybe just as well, on reflection)

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 5 February 2005 16:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, very well done Scotland. My Dad was nearly in tears with Celtic pride until it all eventually fell apart.

Lara (Lara), Saturday, 5 February 2005 18:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I've watched two great second halves, and I have to admit, I wanted wales to do it at the end after they got that last penalty.

Ed (dali), Saturday, 5 February 2005 19:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Yep, they truly deserved it. Shane Williams was brilliant.

Matt (Matt), Saturday, 5 February 2005 19:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Wales - Yay! What a performance! Henson's two tackles on Tait will go down in legend. Great front-five performance to nullify he only obvious English strength. And they made less mistakes. For England - a piss-poor Dawson's last game? How long can they continue with Thompson? Also what to do with the back-row? Worsley is no No.8 and Hazell was thrashed at the breakdown by Martin Williams.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Sunday, 6 February 2005 12:37 (twenty-one years ago)

well done wales! let's hope there are less cotton traders clad morons on the streets of london after this ;o)

and well done Leeds in the proper rugby world club championships

chris away, Sunday, 6 February 2005 13:31 (twenty-one years ago)

And not so well done Ireland this afternoon. We do have an away win under our belts but that was one mother of a shaky start. And O'Driscoll is potentially out of action for next weekend. Eek.

Lara (Lara), Sunday, 6 February 2005 19:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Hahaha, me and Cook were quite jubilant at O'Driscoll's injury, for purely selfish Scottish reasons. I'm mean like that, sometimes.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 6 February 2005 20:03 (twenty-one years ago)

oi! brown! off this thread right now ;)

blimey, eddie butler could be right, he predicted england, ireland, france, scotland AND wales would all win three games each and it would come down to score difference

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Sunday, 6 February 2005 20:41 (twenty-one years ago)

rugby?

cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 6 February 2005 20:55 (twenty-one years ago)

yes!

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Sunday, 6 February 2005 20:58 (twenty-one years ago)

yeesh Ireland were not so good. Forwards terrible. There were parts of the game where Italy were getting more headway past the Irish forwards than past the backs.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 6 February 2005 21:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Wales will win 3 (Italy and the Jocks), but have an outside chance of taking France away after a couple of great wins in Paris in recent years. Sadly, France will have sorted out their half-backs by then - after yesterday's comedy selection surely Michalak and Yachvili will return right away. I'm not sure if Harinordiquay, Magne and Betsen will be back though, mind you I liked the look of Magne's replacement, Chabal. He's a throwback to the old days of nutters like Tordo, Moscato, Rives etc.

I reckon Ireland could win 4.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Sunday, 6 February 2005 21:05 (twenty-one years ago)

i was tempted to put a bet on ireland doing the slam, i reckon i might even get better odds now than yesterday...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Sunday, 6 February 2005 21:08 (twenty-one years ago)

But the big Rugby news is that I scored 2 tries in an epic 29-0 win yesterday. Our first win in 2005, and my first tries since electricity was discovered.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Sunday, 6 February 2005 21:09 (twenty-one years ago)

william hils odds for grand slam, currently:

No Winner 4/6
Ireland 7/2
France 4/1
Wales 8/1
Italy 1000/1

hmm, that must be from earlier today, eh?

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Sunday, 6 February 2005 21:11 (twenty-one years ago)

i'll give anyone here a GRILLION BILLION TO ONE on italy doing it, any takers?

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Sunday, 6 February 2005 21:12 (twenty-one years ago)

No chance, chum.

Nice to see Scotland not being achingly rubbish. Over the weekend, star turns from a couple of players per country (the Magic Highlighted Mullet passes over the water from O'Driscoll to Shane Williams, bless him), with tottering backup in most cases apart (at a pinch) from Wales. Italy were just walking the Irish pack wherever they wanted yesterday, but didn't seem to know where to go.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Monday, 7 February 2005 16:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Scotland's forwards were good, but you really can't see many tries coming from those backs. Cusiter played well as did Jason White, but the best bit was Tom Smith's chip and chase. Couldn't someone remind him that props don't do that?

Didn't see the Oirish yesterday, but it sounds like they wised up to the increasingly obv idea that the Irish front row are rubbish and if you front up you have a chance. Sounds like B O'D is out next week.

The Dr. C 6-nations man of the weekend award* goes to Welsh tighthead Adam Jones. Despite looking like a pub player who's won a Jim'll fix it contest to play rugby at the millenium stadium, he was immense. Scrummaged like a roadroller stuck in low-gear and hit every ruck like a bison on crack - superb.

*Will be awarded after every 6N weekend. Will always go to a Welsh player.

The Dr. C villian award goes to the moronic Danny Grewcock. Should have had a straight red for kicking Peel in the face at a ruck near the English line. Nasty, nasty man.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Monday, 7 February 2005 16:25 (twenty-one years ago)

**but it sounds like they wised up**

I mean Italy, obv.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Monday, 7 February 2005 16:26 (twenty-one years ago)

hehe "B O'D".

here comes BO'D

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 7 February 2005 17:33 (twenty-one years ago)

beanz (beanz), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 14:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Ouch - I hate it when that happens.

BO'D and GD'A are apparently likely to be fit for Ireland at the wkend.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 14:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Another grebt weekend.

I didn't see the England game, so perhaps someone else can fill in on that, but it sounds like they totally screwed up the chance to beat a mediocre French team.

But onto the good teams - my boys did it again - yes! From the fisrt few minutes the result wasn't in doubt in Rome. I think the Italian pack was bigged up a little too much after the Scotland game, but they were still pretty solid in the set-piece v Wales. But their backs knocked on every time they had a bit of space. So many turnovers that against a team with backs like Wales, they were certain to be thumped. And they were. All the key performers shone for Wales - Henson, Shane Williams, both second rows, Gareth Thomas, but the Dr. C Man of the Weekend award goes to openside Martin Williams, a player for whom perpetual motion is the norm. He linked the forwards and the backs all afternoon, grabbed every loose ball, didn't miss a tackle and scored a very good try.

Ireland look onimously good. Didn't miss BO'D or GD'A at all at all. The pack, especially when using the rolling maul, is pretty hard to handle and that's where games are won and lost. The be-mulleted Shane Byrne had a stormer, as did O'Connell and O'Kelly. I especially liked O'Connor at openside flanker too. I am already worried about how Wales can handle Ireland - if Colin Charvis is fit again I think Wales might just be able to get enough ball to have a go, but their lineout needs to be better and they need to avoid getting tied up in a forward battle. The poor old Scots are of course still pish, despite yet more heroics from the back row and Cusiter. They have by far the most pedestrian three-quarters in the championship.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Monday, 14 February 2005 11:21 (twenty years ago)

Watching Jonathan Davies trying hard not to grin after the England v. France game was more entertaining than the game itself

Dadaismus (Dada), Monday, 14 February 2005 11:25 (twenty years ago)

Depressing fatalism from the Scots. Rubbish pissing-away of a good first half by England. Nice one Wales! Gav 'Golden-booted Mantan' Henson can look forward to a modelling contract for Burton in the very near future.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Monday, 14 February 2005 11:32 (twenty years ago)

I think the rest of the world was highly amused to hear bellyaching from the English about the French winning by kicking penalties

Dadaismus (Dada), Monday, 14 February 2005 11:33 (twenty years ago)

Heh. We only like it when Jonny's fit (but he knows it).

Liz :x (Liz :x), Monday, 14 February 2005 11:36 (twenty years ago)

England are missing Johnson, Back, Hill and Dollydayglo FAR more than Johnny.

I wonder if Gav will choose Platinum boots for the next match? So far he's gone for silver and then gold. Perhaps after the platinum ones, a bejewelled pair?

Dr. C (Dr. C), Monday, 14 February 2005 11:52 (twenty years ago)

Diamonique-encrusted.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Monday, 14 February 2005 11:54 (twenty years ago)

Scotland won a game! Not terribly convincingly, and immensely boringly, but the wooden spoon will be off to Italy this year, I figure.

In contrast, the France v Wales game has been really entertaining to watch.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 26 February 2005 17:46 (twenty years ago)

Wales produced their best game so far and the game of the tournament so far. Wales Ireland should be a cracker.

Ed (dali), Saturday, 26 February 2005 19:26 (twenty years ago)

Has this become too painful to talk about?

Penelope_111 (Penelope_111), Monday, 28 February 2005 14:53 (twenty years ago)

Not for me - as an eyetie, I expect to lose, and as an honourary taff (apparently - I always watch the rugby with my mate who's the grandson of a Welsh captain of the 1920s, and he has bestowed the honour on me), I'm loving it. Come on Wales (sorry Penelope)!!

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 28 February 2005 15:07 (twenty years ago)

The English are really taking the defeat badly, how petty it is.

Not least when you consider some of the incidents down the years they've been involved with, I don't remember anyone calling the referee to task after the Munster Leicester Heineken Cup Final.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 10:48 (twenty years ago)

The English are really taking the defeat badly, how petty it is.

'twas ere so

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 11:57 (twenty years ago)

A great weekend. The last 5 minutes of Wales-France seemed to last a lifetime. Thank god we had a better ref than in the England game - he resisted the urge to give a kneejerk penalty try in that last sequence of scrums. He actually seemed to appreciate what was going on in there and kept a good eye on Monsieur Marconnet, who looked like he really wanted to try and collapse it if he got the chance. France were sublime in the 1st 40 mins though. Jauzion is a terrific player and the new full back looks like a find. I was impressed with Rougerie for the first time too. Their props are beasts, and we did well to resist up front. The Dr. C MOTW award this week goes to No.8 Michael Owen, who had his best game for Wales - making the correct decisions at the back of a scrum going backwards is a nightmare, and he got it spot on. He made yards when he had to, never losing the ball in contact (an old weakness of his) and linking with the backs when it was possible. Other mentions should go to Martyn Williams(2 tries), Shane Williams (a very tough 1st half, but recovered to worry the French), Kevin Morgan (v. good tackling after being moved to full-back) and Robert Sidoli.

We'll beat Scotland obv, but Ireland will be tough. Two areas of concern : 1) the lineout - we have to get 100% of our ball, because we sure as hell won't get any of theirs. 2) the rolling maul. It killed us last year in Dublin, we know it's coming, but can we stop it? I think we'll bring in Robin McBryde at hooker for this one. Mefin Davies has done nothing wrong, but doesn't have the brute strength or experience.

England - no confidence. I think they'll beat Scotland though.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 13:18 (twenty years ago)

Scotland have one surprise result up their sleeve - it won't be England unfortunately but it might be Wales. I want Wales to win however as I want the game with Ireland to be the Grand Slam decider!

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 13:21 (twenty years ago)

Scotland beating Wales? I just can't see it. I guess Wales's only real weakness is lack of muscle in the pack, especially the front 5, but while Ireland could exploit that, I don't think Scotland can. If Jason White is fit, it'll help, but I only see parity up front at best for Scotland. Scotland's backs are pretty ordinary in attack and defence, and I can't see them holding the line for 80 minutes if we get our share of decent possesion.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 13:38 (twenty years ago)

True, Scotland are utterly shite.

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 13:39 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
Congratulations Wales. You've been magnificent the whole way through and totally deserved the Grand Slam.

Penelope_111 (Penelope_111), Saturday, 19 March 2005 17:34 (twenty years ago)

Exhilarating stuff! I can't stop smiling. Or shouting. Or singing. Or drinking.

C J (C J), Saturday, 19 March 2005 18:17 (twenty years ago)

Scotland are veering between exciting and utterly shite now. I think I prefer utterly shite, it stops me getting my hopes up like I was when Simon Taylor scored.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 19 March 2005 19:30 (twenty years ago)

Since I posted that, we have turned conclusively into utter shite. Be careful what you wish for...

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 19 March 2005 19:34 (twenty years ago)

p.s. I am now really quite drunk. And happy. :)

C J (C J), Saturday, 19 March 2005 19:43 (twenty years ago)
