How hard is it getting a job when you have a felony on your criminal record?

Well. How hard is it?

Mickey (modestmickey), Monday, 7 February 2005 02:36 (twenty years ago)

depends on the job. what did you do?

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 7 February 2005 02:49 (twenty years ago)

yep i think that depends on what industry you are applying to. for example, in western australia, if you have any misuse of drug misdemeanours on your criminal record, no matter how minor, you can't get a job in the mining industry. the justification for this is highly tenuous if you ask me, but it is to do with the likelihood that you will be controlling/working around heavy machinery and dangerous/explosive substances. seems a bit of overkill when drug testing is pretty common too, but whatevs.

also i think it would depend on whether you are asked to disclose your criminal record in your application. obviously if the job requires a police clearance and you can't get one, it would be pretty hard to get the job.

The crimes would be criminal copyright infringement and conspiracy. I wouldn't be going into anything computer related. What I am going into, I'm not completely sure. I was going to be a teacher, but I'm starting to rethink that.

being a teacher would require a police clearance where i live. but your criminal record is expunged for a lot of crimes after a certain amount of time here too, i think after about 10 years. although conspiracy offences are usually associated with organised crime here so i reckon they would probably be a permanent record.

are you blaster master?

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 7 February 2005 03:04 (twenty years ago)

You murdered your roomate, didn't you?

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Monday, 7 February 2005 06:17 (twenty years ago)

can you not get your first offense (if that's what it is) expunged, sealed? Or is this just for misdemeanors like shoplifting or something like that? My cousin got into some trouble of that kind and she was able to get it expunged, after paying a fee and going to a class of some kind...but it didn't help her, the klepto...

The only way to get rid of a felony is to have the president pardon it, or some other politician. I forgot what. Maybe a governor?

Mickey (modestmickey), Monday, 7 February 2005 13:53 (twenty years ago)

If you murdered your roommate and got done for copyright infringement you must have had one hell of a lawyer.

In the UK, you automatically don't have to disclose convictions after a certain time limit, depending on what it was.

Not "semi-covertly", but under my own name. I often post on Guardian blogs. What's so weird about joining in a discussion we are encouraging? Intrigued to know we have a "hardon" for things rightwing as well. Hadn't noticed myself, but there you go. What would I know? Good to see you're as rational as ever, Dom, and not at all embittered about anything.

Er, what's the point of reviving old threads to make old jokes of someone who hasn't posted here for like a year or something?

Tuomas, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 09:05 (eighteen years ago)

You ask too many questions, man
