I'm on hold to the Student Loans Company. At the moment, the hold music is the Black Eyed Peas. If I hadn't been pissed off already, I'm hardly going to be in a good mood when someone finally comes on the line

(this is the thread to post on when you've been put on hold)

(it's switched to Basement Jaxx now)

Where's your head at?

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Monday, 7 February 2005 12:37 (twenty years ago)

It wasn't "Shut up just shut up shut up" before, was it?

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 7 February 2005 12:40 (twenty years ago)

Oddly enough, yes!

I have come off the phone now. My problem was: they sent me three different deferment forms, one with all of my loans on and two with the loans divided between them. I asked if I could just throw those two away. The answer was: I should throw out the form with all my loans on, fill in both of the other two, and send them in along with two copies of my payslips, other supporting evidence, etc, etc. Bloody idiots.

caitlin (caitlin), Monday, 7 February 2005 12:42 (twenty years ago)

you should have tried to request + line.

ken c (ken c), Monday, 7 February 2005 12:46 (twenty years ago)

I have no idea what that means.

caitlin (caitlin), Monday, 7 February 2005 12:46 (twenty years ago)

neither do i now. request line was a black eyed peas song and for about half a minute the post above made perfect sense, and then the clarity ceased.

ken c (ken c), Monday, 7 February 2005 12:49 (twenty years ago)

lyrics..
Pick up the phone call up the line
Call up the re-quest line
Call up the line
Call up the re-quest line
Nana nana nananana na na nana nana
So call up the line
Get down wit, down wit us

ken c (ken c), Monday, 7 February 2005 12:51 (twenty years ago)

Oh, ok. If I'd known that, it might have been slightly clearer :-)

caitlin (caitlin), Monday, 7 February 2005 12:52 (twenty years ago)

i was calling up some guy's business line once and his waiting music was "always look on the bright side of life", i like the song well enough and everything but when it got to the "life is full of SHIT, when you look at it" bit i imagined how some people would take exceptions to the choice of song.

ken c (ken c), Monday, 7 February 2005 12:56 (twenty years ago)

Well, yes, I see your point. Most people would probably prefer a song that went like this.

Cunt cunt cunt cunt,
cunt cunt cunt
Cunt cunt cunt cunt,
CUNT CUNT CUNT!

I would sing it myself, but I don't think I'm emo enough.

caitlin (caitlin), Monday, 7 February 2005 12:58 (twenty years ago)

and this other time i had to call this other guy (i was working at a car finance company and had to make a load of calls) and the ansafone was the guitar solo bit of The Final Countdown. There was nothing I could do but hang up twice each at the end of it so I could call to listen to it again.

ken c (ken c), Monday, 7 February 2005 12:59 (twenty years ago)

xpost haha the new turbonegro single

ken c (ken c), Monday, 7 February 2005 13:00 (twenty years ago)

caitlin (caitlin), Monday, 7 February 2005 13:00 (twenty years ago)

charltonlido (gareth), Monday, 7 February 2005 13:13 (twenty years ago)

this call may be monitored for quality assurance

oskar shindig! (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 7 February 2005 13:16 (twenty years ago)

Here it's more normally "this call may be recorded for training purposes"

caitlin (caitlin), Monday, 7 February 2005 13:21 (twenty years ago)

i spent ALL FRIDAY AFTERNOON on the phone to symantec and their hold music was ALL either bloody fucking coldplay or bloody fucking walking in memphis.

emsk, Monday, 7 February 2005 13:31 (twenty years ago)

Just tell me where I am in the queue then SHUT THE FUCK UP!

Who thought that playing shite music down your lughole when you're waiting for a 'human' to respond was a good idea? I have never heard anyone say it's useful or soothing or even nicely distracting.

It makes me want to commit serious crime.

Penelope_111 (Penelope_111), Monday, 7 February 2005 13:39 (twenty years ago)

I like what BT do with their Business Broadband helpline: put you on hold for 15 minutes, then drop the call.

i think the idea is that it lets you know that you're still connected to the line (xpost re: BT obv) like, you hear sounds and so you know that they haven't hung up on you. And music is the kind of neutral meaningless sound they can put in, they could have just put in random computer bleeping noises but that'd be worse really (you can argue this point obv. like what if they play coldplay etc.).
