i can never decide which one i like more. ATHF has meatwad and shake, but Sealab had Captain Murphy and still has Stormy. both shows make life better.

JD from CDepot, Monday, 7 February 2005 17:39 (twenty years ago)

MC Chris was on both, but AquaTeen get my vote.

Holly (an appletross), Monday, 7 February 2005 17:41 (twenty years ago)

SeaLab, I think. By a nose.

It don't mean butt if it ain't got that jut. (kenan), Monday, 7 February 2005 17:43 (twenty years ago)

"Its like a koala bear crapped a rainbow in my brain"

JD from CDepot, Monday, 7 February 2005 17:48 (twenty years ago)

ATHF, for being more consistent - Sealab has higher highs (cf. BIZARRO!, UH OH!, FISHING HOLE!), and lower lows (cf. where Shanks talks about his 13 brothers, and Hesh turns into Keanu Reeves, UH OH!). The only ATHF episode that falls flat for me is Li'l Brittle, and even that one has MC Pee Pants, so it's not that bad @ all.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 7 February 2005 17:53 (twenty years ago)

I'll take Harvey Birdman over both w/out hesitation, though.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 7 February 2005 17:54 (twenty years ago)

I love Aqua Teen, but I'm not sure that it's made anything as perfect and beautiful as "Bebop Cola".

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 7 February 2005 18:00 (twenty years ago)

The Ghost of Christmas Past From The Future begs to differ. You should have gotten a snack.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 7 February 2005 18:03 (twenty years ago)

You know - Harvey Birdman has a bear. Sealab has a bear. ATHF needs a bear.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 7 February 2005 18:07 (twenty years ago)

Definitely. Sealab has been way more inconsistent, even more so recently.

Leon the Fatboy (Ex Leon), Monday, 7 February 2005 18:08 (twenty years ago)

Btw I haven't seen a new episode of either for like two years, so really I'd settle for either one. :(

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 7 February 2005 18:11 (twenty years ago)

Quinn is my nu-God in a way the Frylock could never be. Also, black Debbie kills me.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 7 February 2005 18:12 (twenty years ago)

(Haha I am all blackist in my ironic cartoon recontextualizations)

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 7 February 2005 18:12 (twenty years ago)

Harvey Birdman has been topping both recently. I want DVDs of THAT show. It used to be pretty reliable that if ATHF didn't measure up then Sealab would make up for it, but now ATHF is kinda stuck in a loop of excessively similar twisted shit happening every episode with no real target of satire. Sealab got rid of Captain Murphy and replaced him with the coach character = Sealab has become nigh-unwatchable shit. Adult Swim went from being an excellent showcase to a comedy wasteland in a rather annoyingly short period of time, it's a little sad but not really unexpected, I suppose.

TOMBOT, Monday, 7 February 2005 18:20 (twenty years ago)

Tom, you know they didn't actually get rid of Murphy, right? The actor doing Murphy's voice (Harry Goz) died, so they hired Goz's son to play Shanks. Losing Murphy & misplacing Marco for most of this season = ungh. (Poor Sharko.) (The "Fantastic Voyage" episode was fun, though, as was Marco's return.)

Let's not talk about S3th McF@rl@n3, either.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 7 February 2005 18:30 (twenty years ago)

Why not?

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 7 February 2005 18:34 (twenty years ago)

I was gonna say, "Fantastic Voyage" was awesome. I also liked the grief counselor but that's largely because of the rampant mayhem.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 7 February 2005 18:38 (twenty years ago)

OK, lemme rephrase that to say, "Me, myself, & I won't talk about S3th because I don't think he's all that, & Adult Swim tying themselves to his newly-buoyant ass only reminds me of my feelings for S3th, & me bringing him up in the context of not wanting to talk about him was ultradopey as that's only going to cause people to talk about him, so whatever, I'm gonna go hump a fridge, Spartacus."

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 7 February 2005 18:40 (twenty years ago)

Are you afraid S3th is going to google himself and find this thread?

Leon the Fatboy (Ex Leon), Monday, 7 February 2005 18:42 (twenty years ago)

Adult Swim should really be all about the Venture Brothers anyway.

Leon the Fatboy (Ex Leon), Monday, 7 February 2005 18:42 (twenty years ago)

Robot Chicken looks promising too, but they haven't started showing it yet.

Leon the Fatboy (Ex Leon), Monday, 7 February 2005 18:46 (twenty years ago)

The whole Squidbillies embargo still befuddles me.

I'd bitch about how I'd want Brak back, & new episodes of Home Movies, and YES The Venture Brothers 24-7, but meh, I'm OK w/ things as they are right now (even w/ the sporadic quality speed-bumps). Though, really, guys, how about not showing the same 4 episodes of Tom Goes To The Mayor every month, huh?

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 7 February 2005 18:51 (twenty years ago)

I think whoever is behind Robot Chicken also did similar things on MadTV.

Also, "Home Movies" sucks almost as badly as "Mission Hill" and "Baby Blues".

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 7 February 2005 18:52 (twenty years ago)

Home Movies has its moments. Most of them involve Coach McGurk.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 7 February 2005 18:54 (twenty years ago)

Though, really, guys, how about not showing the same 4 episodes of Tom Goes To The Mayor every month, huh?

YES. I started off thinking the show was mildly amusing, but rerunning the same episodes over and over again has made me hate Tom Goes the the Mayor.

I think whoever is behind Robot Chicken also did similar things on MadTV.

Actually, it's Seth Green. And the writers from Twisted Toyfare Theatre.

Leon the Fatboy (Ex Leon), Monday, 7 February 2005 18:56 (twenty years ago)

Also, "Home Movies" sucks almost as badly as "Mission Hill" and "Baby Blues".

So close to being right, Dang, except that you're totally wrong. But whatever. Let us use this thread to sup at Grizzlebee's while chatting up Dusty Gozongas.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 7 February 2005 19:11 (twenty years ago)

Home Movies is hilarious, it's just a really different sort of humor from everything else on AS, and I guess it kinda clashes. It's best when it's bone-fucking-dry.

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Monday, 7 February 2005 19:13 (twenty years ago)

It's best when it's bone-fucking-dry.

OTM

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 7 February 2005 19:14 (twenty years ago)

Home Movies must pay the price!

They also need more of the Coach & the Stimpy like friend and less of the drugged out mom.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 7 February 2005 19:18 (twenty years ago)

Fuck, late to this.

ATHF has the secret weapon that is CARL, so ATHF wins, obviously.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 7 February 2005 19:18 (twenty years ago)

Also - more Louis CK & more fretwork & more w/ McGuirk's loopy new-age girl & more of every other super-dry diddly damn thing. I'm assuming the show's on semi-permanent hiatus, though, so this is all just a bunch of mouth-breathing.

That scene in the ATHF episode w/ Carl babysitting Meatwad's toys while calling up girls from high school, his wife-beater drenched in Chinese take-out juices, almost made me cry.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 7 February 2005 19:22 (twenty years ago)

KAFKA THE MUSICAL

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 7 February 2005 19:28 (twenty years ago)

carl and the two space invaders carry it for ATHF, my hardon for debbie notwithstanding.

venture bros is shiiiit.

f--gg (gcannon), Monday, 7 February 2005 19:33 (twenty years ago)

Months ago I heard rumors of a wondrous ATHF spinoff starring the Mooninites and the spiky German aliens. Someone please tell me that they were true?

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 7 February 2005 19:37 (twenty years ago)

The ATHF intro now features the spiky sponges & the Mooninites messing w/ each other. Spacecataz.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 7 February 2005 19:41 (twenty years ago)

Mentioned on the DVD commentary to ATHF but I had a feeling they were stoned as The Plutonians were.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 7 February 2005 19:43 (twenty years ago)

Am I the only person left cold by all the HAHA FUNNY JOKE Adult Swim crap? It just doesn't do anything for me.

LOOK ONE CHARACTER IS MEAN ALL THE TIME! LOOK ONE LIKES DRUGS! LOOK ONE IS REALLY WEIRD AND FUNNY!!! GET IT!?!?!?!?!? HAHAHA FUNNY

he does guitar with his mouth lmao mint (ex machina), Monday, 7 February 2005 20:30 (twenty years ago)

Yes, you are the ONLY PERSON LEFT IN THE COLD.

Thanks for sharing. HAHA LOL Oh No!

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 7 February 2005 20:33 (twenty years ago)

You're right Jon, funny humour is played out.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 7 February 2005 20:34 (twenty years ago)

Jon is clearly looking for the gentle, good-spirited comedy present in such works as Ingmar Bergman films & Salo: The 120 Days of Sodom.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 7 February 2005 20:36 (twenty years ago)

I like SeaLab best. ATHF has really started to tank, IMHO.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Monday, 7 February 2005 20:50 (twenty years ago)

They don't really show any of these in the UK and it's an absolute CRIME!

dog latin (dog latin), Monday, 7 February 2005 21:00 (twenty years ago)

jon may be right, you know. i think ATHF would be better if it were less shakecentric. but still, SPACECATAZ.

i'd like to hear more s3th mcf4rl4nd hate. i think family guy is one-of-a-kind, that "kind" being "the simpsons." it's not better than the simpsons was at its best. the baby (whose name i'm blanking on) is usually genius, and is the least simpsonsy character (barring sideshow bob i guess). none of these are bold statements, i know.

f--gg (gcannon), Monday, 7 February 2005 21:03 (twenty years ago)

It isn't funny. Family Guy is funny because it has stories that aren't inane shit I could cook up with a bong and a trash animation fetish. Fuck ATHF; fuck Sealab.

The Killers : punk canon as ATHF : comedy canon?

Family Guy is funny because it has stories that aren't inane shit I could cook up with a bong and a trash animation fetish.

No it doesn't, dude. Come on. A parade of Who's The Boss-themed floats? That ain't exactly highbrow and sober.

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Monday, 7 February 2005 21:11 (twenty years ago)

I've only seen one episode of it. Twice. I thought it was some kinda joke, like they're running it as a series, even though it's just one episode.

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Monday, 7 February 2005 23:26 (twenty years ago)

oh and don't get me started about "super milk chan." cartoons from japan are terrible enough, what's the point?

haha fuck it, jon otm at this point.

f--gg (gcannon), Monday, 7 February 2005 23:29 (twenty years ago)

Dude, that's the weed talkin'! Only dopes do dope!

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 7 February 2005 23:39 (twenty years ago)

I think I HAVE written a few Adult Swim scripts and posted them to this board on particularly slow days (before I got a nintendo DS for xmas)

The thing is, like I said above, you can only sustain untargeted, diffuse satire for so long. I can see where Jon is coming from because I hated shit like that in college too, I mean by the time I dropped out and went into the military South Park was only one year old and I was positively sick of everything related to Stone/Parker and so forth. College kids are horrible for your sense of humor (or getting joy out of life in general)

Super Milk Chan and Tom Goes To The Mayor, plus no more captain murphy, are basically why I think we stopped watching AS at all.

I liked a few home movies episodes.

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 8 February 2005 00:49 (twenty years ago)

Super Milk Chan is... what is it?

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 01:13 (twenty years ago)

For me, it's that 1-minute promo with Chan screaming "YOU DUMBASS!" and The President saying "I'm the President! OH YEAH! OH YEAH!" while a fly lands on his round kebob lunch over & over again. And the dance beat. The half-hour version wears me out and makes me nauseous.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 02:20 (twenty years ago)

Did anyone see "Perfect Hair Forever"? Of all the Williams St. material to come out recently, that was by far the best. But I think they just have shown one episode thus far.

Matt Chesnut, Tuesday, 8 February 2005 02:50 (twenty years ago)

That was a one-off and I hated it.

Stupornaut (natepatrin), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 04:23 (twenty years ago)

i kinda agree w/ jon. i do think harvey birdman can be clever and subversive as hell though, while the other two shows are more just angry/absurdist. and the brak show is fucking awful.

eman (eman), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 04:34 (twenty years ago)

The brak show illustrates just what I'm trying to point out, though. It was new and pretty funny and even daresay refreshing at first, then after about a season and a half Thunder Kleez blowing up Zorak and Dad being a jerk got old and there's no more depth to it than that. Adult Swim is self-destructive in their obsessive drive to avoid anything topical or meaningful, I think. No collection of absurd characters or situations can hold anyone's attention without some kind of narrative beyond "Marco disappears and has a shark baby"

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 8 February 2005 04:52 (twenty years ago)

I mean at least Harvey Birdman's woes as a misfit in his organization and the fact that each episode has a "plot" gives it SOME juice

I am thinking way too hard about this shit now. Good night.

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 8 February 2005 04:56 (twenty years ago)

i like these shows a lot, its sad that.

Un investigador del siglo XXI (AaronHz), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 08:31 (twenty years ago)

The best episode of The Brak Show is the Halloween one where Mother is killing everyone, mostly because of the use of the phrase "special candy". Other than that, meh.

I still love Futurama, though.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 13:08 (twenty years ago)

I think it's hilarious when people start getting all het up about comedies that don't have a "plot". Go read some Arthur Conan Doyle or something.

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 13:52 (twenty years ago)

It's not about them not having a plot, it's about them not having anything at all. There's like very little in the way of sustainable concept; once you've seen like X amount of ATHF or Sealab you've kind of seen all of it, no matter how many more they want to make. My old method of like catching Adult Swim once every 3 weeks was better than my method of actually watching it every week and then realizing that it got kind of old.

I don't think Home Movies was bad, I think Coach McGurk was funny. Harvey Birdman is funny but if I EVER see the Scooby Doo episode that AS likes to run once or twice a month AGAIN I will kill someone HAHAHAHA SHAGGY SMOKES THE GANJA WHAT A FUNNY JOKE wtf. I wish they'd repeat the Space Ghost episode with either A) Bjork and Thom Yorke B) Dennis Miller. Brak Show is only funny if you see it every once and a while, if you catch it too many times in a row you'll wish you were dead. Best ATHF: the Robotic Ghost of Christmas Past or whatever. Best Sealab: Quinn's Vacation. Both of those shows could've done with the normal AS thing of inexplicably putting shows on hiatus for like 6 months and then having them return again for like 3 weeks, randomly, then disappearing again, etc.

Oh and Tom Goes To The Mayor made me want to vomit blood and don't get me started on Super Milk Chan, the opening of that looks like the most unreadable thread on the noize board with the addition of HELLO KITTY or something, and even that is only about 1/100th as good as that sounds. I'll fucking watch the Powerpuff Girls, thanx (and I won't actually do that, come to think of it).

Allyzay Dallas Multi-Pass (allyzay), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 14:07 (twenty years ago)

It'd be nice if they ditched out Tom Goes To The Mayor/Oblongs/Super Milk Chan/Baby Blues/etc crappy shit that doesn't seem to have any appeal to anyone in the world besides maybe a man going through a midlife crisis or something and start showing Lupin or Cowboy Bebop again at some time besides 4am, occasionally. The WE MUST BE SUPER FUNNY I'LL FORM THE HEAD method of scheduling at AS over the past, hmmm, six months? More? makes me really, really sad.

Because 87% of it is not funny, anymore. Mainly because nothing is ever funny when you are forcing yourself to be as funny and wacky as possible. Unless you're Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson.

Allyzay Dallas Multi-Pass (allyzay), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 14:11 (twenty years ago)

Also I totally understand where Jon is coming from; I've had the pleasure of being stuck listening to waaaaaaaay too many girls who "love" ATHF because Meatwad is soooooo cuuuuuuuuute to not have had my perception of that show colored a little bit by the type of people who have no sense of humor whatsoever, or even like a modicum of intelligence that I can see, sitting around quoting the WORST lines from the show.

I only know like two or three people who ever reference funny shit from that show, despite knowing a lot of people who seem to like to bring up ATHF at any given moment.

Allyzay Dallas Multi-Pass (allyzay), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 14:16 (twenty years ago)

It'd be nice if they ditched out Tom Goes To The Mayor/Oblongs/Super Milk Chan/Baby Blues/etc crappy shit that doesn't seem to have any appeal to anyone in the world besides maybe a man going through a midlife crisis or something

Yeah, that stuff is terrible, and almost inexplicable.

Leon the Fatboy (Ex Leon), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 14:24 (twenty years ago)

If there was an episode in which Super Milk Chan got bukkaked, that cartoon would contain every single stereotypically horrifying thing about Japanese cartoon culture possible to contain in 15 minutes' time. It's kind of admirable, how incredibly unwatchable it is! You have to try for that, I think.

Allyzay Dallas Multi-Pass (allyzay), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 14:38 (twenty years ago)

If there's anyone on ilx who likes Super Milk Chan, I'd like them to explain the appeal.

I could see why someone might like Baby Blues or the Oblongs even though they're horrible and crap, but I don't even understand why or how someone could like Super Milk Chan. It's the Nellie McKay of cartoons!

Leon the Fatboy (Ex Leon), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 14:42 (twenty years ago)

MORE INUYASHA!!!!!!!!!!

"INUYASHA!!!"
"KAGOME!!!!"
"WIND TUNNEL!!!!!!"

And yeah, more Bebop plz ok thx. Also, at some point I'd like to see all of those middle episodes of Wolf's Rain and Witch Hunter Robin that I missed because apparently in both shows everything goes completely to shit and in Wolf's Rain most of the supporting cast gets killed in increasingly entertaining hope-destroying ways.

There is exactly one funny episode of Super Milk Chan: the one where the President blows himself up with a nuclear bomb. It is funny because A) the President dies, and B) it doesn't follow the Super Milk Chan formula.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 14:43 (twenty years ago)

Otherwise Super Milk Chan is pretty much a shit sandwich on top of a dead baby covered in kryptonite-stuffed dead babies.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 14:44 (twenty years ago)

The funniest thing about Super Milk Chan are the bumps that precede it: "Coming up next, a show that our viewers say makes them want to pole their eyes out with forks!"

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 14:48 (twenty years ago)

You guys are still lame even if you sympathize with me; you don't get off that easy.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 14:59 (twenty years ago)

I think the moisture effects on that talking baby's bottle make me think of bukkake, actually. And that voice! The "best" part about Super Milk Chan - IT'S A HALF-HOUR LONG!

This should make the Fatboy happy - according to bumps I saw last night, Super Milk Chan is getting the bum's rush (for the forseeable future), with The Venture Brothers taking its place.

FWIW - fave ATHF = the censorship one; fave Harvey = Grape Ape on steroids; fave Sealab = FISHING HOLE (because of the animatronic rats, & the hot girl on girl on girl action). Ally OTM re: the AS staples needing to lay fallow for a while to preserve freshness. I OD'd on Brak back before it got shitcanned; when they brought it back after a few months' off, I rediscovered the love.

Yeah, I'm not sure why AS goes for the "cancelled WB animated show" stack after 12:30 EST in lieu of the anime, and I'm super-super-confused as to why they're not raiding MTV's vaults for (OPINION ALERT) primo animated stuff like Clone High USA & Downtown. I mean, c'mon, AOL, you got money - stop giving it to Bob Odenkirk!

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 15:05 (twenty years ago)

OMG if they showed Clone High I would genetically engineer a baby, birth it out of my belly button and give it to them as tribute.

I've heard Tom sing his proposed theme song for "Monkey Cat Tit Mouse" approximately 7,500 times now!!! The only lyrics are "Monkey Caaaaat/Tit Mouuuuuuse!" over and over.

This thread is now dead to me!

Though in fairness I'd probably sooner listen to the conversation about Monkey Cat Tit Mouse again than ever watch Super Milk Chan!

(argh why does my brain insist on doing things like taking the phrase "Monkey Cat Tit Mouse" and editing it into "Monkey Tits")

What, "Tit Mouse" isn't enough for you? You got a thing for opposable thumbs?
