Office Dating Quandry

OK. I'm a temp, started this job yesterday. Anna from Customer Service just got hired after being a temp for a long time. We bonded over our hatred of the temp agency and also of the President. Normally I steer way clear of work-based relationships, but until now I've always had a full-time, established position at whatever job it was. I don't think there's much of a chance of me getting hired here full time.

Is it unethical or ill-advised to ask a co-worker out if you're only a temp?

Dan M. (OutDatWay), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 18:45 (twenty-one years ago)

This is about the only scenario where I would encourage intraoffice dating.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 18:48 (twenty-one years ago)

being a temp is perfect - you don't even hve to worry about ruining your job security if things go wrong/awkward, since there is no work security

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 18:48 (twenty-one years ago)

A resounding NO.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 18:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Yep. They know you're a loose cannon and a wild card without salary. Go crazy.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 18:49 (twenty-one years ago)

The possibility of love is so much more important than any office job.

The possibility of a quick bunk up is so much more important than any office job.

Alienus Quam Reproba (blueski), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 18:52 (twenty-one years ago)

That too.

TS: office job vs blow job

Blow job during office job.

Can you copy? Good. But can you reproduce? Would you like me to tutor you?

Michael White (Hereward), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 18:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Blow job during office job.

This should be the new definition of an "office job".

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 19:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Or "liquid lunch".

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 19:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I just wish I could figure out if she had a ring on her finger or not. That's usually the problem with hot office workers.

She needs to come wandering back by again. If I went looking for her I'd probably get lost in this place.

Dan M. (OutDatWay), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 19:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Clearly Dan, you both have some common aggravation you could work out together.

Michael White (Hereward), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 19:03 (twenty-one years ago)

i say go for it. also, it's "quandary."

OTM. though i think dating to most people means casual hookup with awkward aftermath.

lolita corpus (lolitacorpus), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 19:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd say even that outcome is more important than any office job!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 19:25 (twenty-one years ago)

You all have me convinced. Now I just need to find out where in this godforsaken place she is...

Dan M. (OutDatWay), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 19:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Have you looked behind the file cabinet?

()ops (()()ps), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 21:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Perhaps you could work your mutual hatred of the president into your dalliance somehow. I'm not sure how, I'm just running it up the flagpole.

thee music mole, Tuesday, 8 February 2005 21:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd say wait til nearing the end of your assignment, THEN ask her out.

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 21:25 (twenty-one years ago)

but then you can't get blowjobs in the elevator

()ops (()()ps), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 21:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, cause that happens to you a lot?

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 21:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Just go for it. Right now.
Go for broke - make a move on everything in the office. You may not be there long - but the fax machine will never be the same.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 21:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Frankly I wouldn't wait one second. It seems like you guys are already flirting and you're not even really employed by the same company. Just be extremely mindful if she feels like keeping it completely out of the office.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 21:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Sure, cause if she says to her boss 'ew, this creepy guy hit on me, get rid of him...' that would be good, right?

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 21:33 (twenty-one years ago)

nah, elevators are too quick. usually the stairway.

()ops (()()ps), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 21:34 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost, like I said it seems like they're already comfortable and friendly.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 21:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah that's true, but you never know. I guess I'm just office-dating-shy.

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 21:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I understand that, but it's also easy to ask someone out without really asking them "out". I'd say there's not reason to artificially put up some barrier. Just hang out (lunch together, beer after work whatever) - if something is meant to happen it will. Sounds like you guys are already close enough where she wouldn't be freaked out if you did ask her out. She might just say no. Life is too short and regret lasts too long to pass these things up.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 21:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Exactly. It's not like you either have to do nothing or say "hey wanna fuck?". There's a lot of room in between there, a lot of ways to pursue things slowly and non-creepily.

()ops (()()ps), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 21:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Just ask her if she wants to go out for drinks, not if she wants to go steady. Let things happen from there.

()ops (()()ps), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 21:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Here's a potential "line" to try out at 5:55 someday:

"Dude, fuck this, let's get a beer."

I see absolutely nothing wrong with that. Throw in a couple compliments when you're out. If nothing happens, fine. If something happens, then you have a sexy secret!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 21:46 (twenty-one years ago)

What if the sexy secret turns out to be a shenis?

Okay, I'm shutting up now.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 21:48 (twenty-one years ago)

The naughty secret thing is great.

Are there other people at your work that you wouldn't mind hanging out with? Ask them to join the two of you if you don't want it to seem like a full-on date.

()ops (()()ps), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 21:49 (twenty-one years ago)

sexy secret!

Nellie (nellskies), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 00:54 (twenty years ago)

FUCK

She's hitched.

Dan M. (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 16:44 (twenty years ago)

I think this calls for a "Shitty nondescript wedding ring unappreciation thread".

...or maybe her marriage is a sham? If not, it will be when her husband finds out she's having a torrid office affair with you. Persistance!

matttt (chachee), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 16:48 (twenty years ago)

damn office breeders. always already taken.

xpost

heh, yeah. does she wear her ring at work? usually, if not, she's lookin'.

Kingfish MuffMiner 2049er (Kingfish), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 16:58 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, it's a pretty nondescript ring. Completely stealthy. Then again, I'm just about 100% clueless about such things.

Dan M. (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 17:33 (twenty years ago)

i think my last major office crush was engaged to a guy who was going to school several states away. she never wore her ring either, and i never knew she was taken until she was talking about how she had to have her fiance mail her DVD of Bottle Rocket back to her. she ended up breaking off her engagement, of course.

she wound up moving to chicago for a year, and then came back with with frosted hair and a trucker hat, so perhaps it was for the best.

Kingfish MuffMiner 2049er (Kingfish), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 17:43 (twenty years ago)

nine months pass...
so the office crush of the hour is cute, smart and likes music about as much as i do. even though we're roughly the same age, she's a temp and i'm staff, and on a couple of things i've supervised her directly. we've been out one-on-one, we went out last night with my friends and pretty much monopolized each other conversation-wise. she's only around for another month or two, but guys are always hitting on her so i don't know if i should wait to make a move. what do i do? (if a move should be made, we have not one but two office xmas parties coming up - possible?)
