Nor do I? How did you come to be perplexed by this conundrum, CJ?

Michael White (Hereward), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 20:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Someone emailed it to me today, and asked if I could solve it. I've been staring at it for about three hours, and have given myself a headache. I've tried holding it up to a mirror, standing on my head to read it, reading it backwards ...... it just doesn't make any sense.

C J (C J), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 20:54 (twenty-one years ago)

If you run your cursor over the .jpg and highlight as if you're going to copy it, the letters "s h d fe" and ".htm" appear -- maybe that's part of it?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 20:56 (twenty-one years ago)

standing on my head to read it

I would have paid money to see this.

Michael White (Hereward), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 20:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Aha!

http://www.etienne.nu/imagepuz/

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 21:05 (twenty-one years ago)

So, OK...the website in question has a photo in which there's hidden the name of a webpage in the http://www.etienne.nu/imagepuz/ directory. Finding that webpage will take you to another picture with another hidden webpage name, and so on and so on. The picture above is one of the links in the chain -- it would take you http://www.etienne.nu/imagepuz/shdfe.htm, which apparently is picture-less on purpose.

Of course, without knowing of the initial webpage, you wouldn't have been able to solve the puzzle anyway. (I found the page by doing a search for "shdfe.htm.")

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 21:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Can't get past Stage 3... I have the inability to do those let-your-eyes-move-towards-each-other-to-collide-the-noise-into-something-coherent-3d puzzles. Oh well.. i give up.

donut christ (donut), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 21:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah I got stuck there too. Fuck some headaches. I skipped ahead and now I'm on stage 7. Er 8. Hang on.

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 8 February 2005 21:24 (twenty-one years ago)

The answer to stage 3 is o.htm. I've never been able to do magic eye, either, so I cheated.

Rebekkah (burntbrat), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 21:35 (twenty-one years ago)

O.htm? How is there an O in there? I don't get it.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 21:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't do Stage 4 either.. I thought it was something slightly offwhite in there, so I took the pic, did a paintbucket flood of a darker color, and the entire screen flooded. so i tried "white.htm" or "blank.htm" and no dice... >:(

donut christ (donut), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 21:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Open up 4 in paint instead of another fancy graphics program. When I opened 4 in photoshop, I got nothing. But paint gave me something.

Rebekkah (burntbrat), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 21:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Try using the "sharpen" tool in your graphics editing program, if you've got one. (MUST...PULL...AWAY...FROM...COMPUTER.)

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 21:50 (twenty-one years ago)

O.htm? How is there an O in there? I don't get it.

Actually, never mind: I just saw it.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 21:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Stage 6... i figured out why the pic is the way it is using a known feature in browsers.. now to just figure out... AAAARRGGHH.. most frustrating puzzle ever.

donut christ (donut), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 22:53 (twenty-one years ago)

stage 8 is torturing me here. >_

cis (cis), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 23:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Stage 6 = wtf

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Tuesday, 8 February 2005 23:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, i think the trick is to do a "View Source" on Stage 6...

the key is somewhere in here

"<img src=sumpkult/image6.jpg border=1 bordercolor=#000000>"

If I only knew the significance of "sumpkult". (I tried sumpkult.htm or substrings of "sumpkult" thereof, but to no avail)

donut christ (donut), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 23:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, just putting "image6.jpg" after the prefix URL doesn't work either.

donut christ (donut), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 23:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Some P Kult? ParliamentFunkadelic.htm?

donut christ (donut), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 23:32 (twenty-one years ago)

If you check back, every one of the .jpgs has been in a different subfolder - /hullmulle, /markvark, etc. so it's not quite that. I think you were on the right sort of track with the substrings thing.

cis (cis), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 23:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, just putting "image6.jpg" after the prefix URL doesn't work either.

It worked for me. I mean, just go to www.etienne.nu/imagepuz/sumpkult/image6.jpg and it should be obvious.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 23:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I finally did it.. and got past Stage 7..

Now I'm on Stage 8...

Dear lord.. ok, I'm stuck now.

donut christ (donut), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 23:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I solved this yesterday. hint: all of the image puzzles can be solved using IE and MS Paint.

a banana (alanbanana), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 00:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean, just go to www.etienne.nu/imagepuz/sumpkult/image6.jpg and it should be obvious.

I've tried that, I just get an error message! (maybe I should try IE instead of Firefox!)

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Wednesday, 9 February 2005 00:14 (twenty-one years ago)

haha problem solved

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Wednesday, 9 February 2005 00:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I *think* Stage 8 might be solved if you notice how .-h-t-m is hidden in the text.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 01:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah I was thinking that too. Stumped how, though.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 02:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought it was some sort of anagram, like in the Da Vinci Code.

kickitcricket (kickitcricket), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 02:20 (twenty-one years ago)

stage 10 is possibly most wtf.

cis (cis), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 02:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Screw this, I have real video games at home.

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 9 February 2005 02:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I finished it all eventually (but I had to cheat a bit by googling for answers)

C J (C J), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 11:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Stage 5 stumped me until I tried it in IE. This puzzle hates Firefox.

lock robster (robster), Friday, 11 February 2005 15:16 (twenty-one years ago)

CJ, how did you do the last part? I cheated in order to finish it but even then I couldn't understand it.

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 11 February 2005 15:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Finally finished it but oh no! Another puzzle!

lock robster (robster), Friday, 11 February 2005 16:46 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, don't know if this puzzle would work in safari... at least this first one didn't.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Friday, 11 February 2005 17:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm stuck on stage 12.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Friday, 11 February 2005 17:17 (twenty-one years ago)

n/m, it was just case sensitive

Melissa W (Melissa W), Friday, 11 February 2005 17:23 (twenty-one years ago)

isn't 6 something to do with the x you get in internet explorer when there is a missing image? (i'm using firefox)

but x didn't work for me

jellybean (jellybean), Friday, 11 February 2005 18:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I got it right away, but spent the remaining 18 seconds double-checking my math.

Disagree. And im not into firey solos chief. (Phil D.), Thursday, 5 June 2014 15:59 (eleven years ago)

took me like a second, I'm good at shit like this, it's what I have instead of actually being smart

mikelovestfu (wins), Thursday, 5 June 2014 16:03 (eleven years ago)

I don't really get what important criteria this measures. the ability to see through trick questions? the ability to notice that a picture is upside down?

Οὖτις, Thursday, 5 June 2014 16:03 (eleven years ago)

fucking tests

Οὖτις, Thursday, 5 June 2014 16:04 (eleven years ago)

The ability to feel inferior to east Asian first graders? What I really mean is why the fuck do children have to be tested in order to be admitted to first grade in Hong Kong?
