Food & sex drive

So, at lunchtime I'm reading an article in a magazine about the relationship between diet and sex drive. The article is ostensibly a
review of the new book by John Gray, the author of Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus. I read some of that book and I thought it was a bit of a waste of time. However, the article goes into various foodstuffs that are good for men and women to eat to improve their sex drive. For men (my gender), it's stuff like steak and egg whites and cottage cheese, amongst other things.

I have been noticing recently that my sex drive has been a bit low, lower than ever in fact. I remembered that it was high as any thing 6 months or so ago. Then I started to think about what I am eating now and what I was eating then. 6 months ago I was in the middle of a big attempt to put on wieght by eating loads of egg whites, steak, pasta, cottage cheese etc. These days, I am not eating meat at all, rarely eat eggs and never eat cottage cheese. I am thinking that what was in the article makes a bit of sense.

So, this is a thread to discuss the relationship between foods and sex drive.

i don't know but jon williams told me that eating a lot of soy products will make you androgynous.

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 15:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm guessing it is because those foods are high in protein, and the male, er, sex goo is a highly proteinated substance. That's my super scientific assessment.

As long as it means I have a good reason to tell a ladyfriend to cook steak for me, I'm down.

Surely you're supposed to eat your meat RAW.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 15:57 (twenty-one years ago)

The thing is though, if you believe OTHER "foods for sex fluids" articles, those particular foods make semen taste/smell horrible, supposedly, and if you are having an issue with this, you aren't supposed to eat them! It's a catch 22.

(NB I really have never noticed this being an actually true fact but OTOH I've never sampled fruitarian come or anything like that so maybe that tastes like MANGOS or something)

Allyzay Dallas Multi-Pass (allyzay), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 15:58 (twenty-one years ago)

also have you been exercising less? exercising makes you hornyyyyyy

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 15:59 (twenty-one years ago)

pastrami. just ask george costanza.

Big Baby Bingo (Chris V), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought it was supposed to be B vitamins and Zinc or something like that. Or maybe that's for women. Dammit, The Office Nutricionist has just left so I can't ask her.

Kate Kept Me Alive! (kate), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought this was going to be like a canned food drive, but with sex!

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 16:02 (twenty-one years ago)

curry makes me REALLY horny.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 16:02 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost to allyzay

someone told me this is really true. i'm not sure, i haven't had any semen in a while. but she said when her boyfriend eats a good vegan diet it's not gross, and when he eats lots of meat or fast food it is ACRID. (sorry for being disgusting)

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 16:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Vegetarians not only eat lame things, they also have lame sex. This confirms a long-held theory.

(just kidding, guys, you know I love you in all your malnourished glory)

Fish fingers all in a line (kenan), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 16:03 (twenty-one years ago)

:(

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 16:03 (twenty-one years ago)

horny sounded gross. i mean. "curry appears to increase my sex drive"

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 16:04 (twenty-one years ago)

One would have to seriously starve me to put a dent in my horniness.

Michael White (Hereward), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 16:04 (twenty-one years ago)

What Kate said - zinc's an important nutrient here. Something that's good to snack on and has plenty of Zn: dry roast a bunch of pumpkin seeds in a frying pan and whack in some decent soya sauce when they're cooked and get that down yr neck. Only takes about 3 minutes to cook too.

NickB (NickB), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 16:05 (twenty-one years ago)

vegas really shouldn't be giving blowjobs at all.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 16:05 (twenty-one years ago)

pastrami. just ask george costanza.

Ha ha, that's what came to mind when I saw the title of this thread.

Leon the Fatboy (Ex Leon), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 16:05 (twenty-one years ago)

So maybe the ultimate sex diet for a man would be high protein vegan foods? Chick peas, beans, edamame, etc.? Coupled with an exercise program that doesn't leave one so exhausted that the increased horn is good for something besides getting incongruous boners at work?

known vaginatarian (nickalicious), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 16:05 (twenty-one years ago)

incongruous boners! OMG!

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 16:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I started taking a Calcium/Magnesium/Zinc supplement a couple of months ago for help on the Woman Problems front, and it had the unfortunate side effect of giving me The Horn.

Now I'd kind of like to know what foods to eat to *not* have a sex drive again.

Kate Kept Me Alive! (kate), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 16:07 (twenty-one years ago)

The foodstuffs are those that raise dopamine levels. This is good for the male sex drive apparently.

here's the first chapter of the book

Caitlin - I am exercising less actually. Running, eggs and cottage cheese it is tonight for me then.

bull testicles, spotted dick, coq au vin

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 16:08 (twenty-one years ago)

and here's the article

I does read like a bit of an advertisement for the thing, as do my posts actually. I would be 100% sceptical if this wasn't borne out by my experience.

I'm going to try changing my diet along these lines to see what effect it has.

hmmm (hmmm), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 16:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Blokes should be eating the pumpkin seeds apparently.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 16:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Um, this may seem like a no-brainer, but taking a gender-specific multi-vitamin would be another good idea. I've been taking one regularly for the first time in like YEARS for the past month+ and have the horn like a fuckin' Viking helmet.

known vaginatarian (nickalicious), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 16:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks, I'd prefer to have a go with the food before trying supplements though.

hmmm (hmmm), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 16:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm wary of the dopamine thing. I always thought romance and sex were all about the Oxytocin. But then again, do men have Oxytocin, or is it only for the mammas?

Kate Kept Me Alive! (kate), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 16:15 (twenty-one years ago)

me too! my mom bought me vitamins for women and i got all pissed at her (for some reason) and wouldn't take them. then i ran out of non-sexist vitamins and didn't want to buy more (shit is expensive) so i take the women's ones. also the folic acid prevents birth defects should i become pregnant. bonus!

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 16:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, now that I think about it for more than 2 seconds, a supplement may be a good idea, especially as I am now 2 months without meat. Any recommendations?

It looks like a giant hard rock candy.

hmmm (hmmm), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 16:30 (twenty-one years ago)

i haven't had any semen in a while.

this is the most awesomest sentence ever.

sugarpants (sugarpants), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 16:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I tried zinc for lady troubles also, but the tablets made me feel intensely queasy so I had to leave them alone. They gave me the horn of vomit. I am aware that that sentence doesn't quite work.

alix (alix), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 17:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought that dark chocolate was the thing for women.

Yr3k (dymaxia), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 17:42 (twenty-one years ago)

That's just an excuse they use to eat more.

alix (alix), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 18:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I just ate a cheeseburger, and I am now overcome with the urge to fuck the shit out of a vegetarian.
