Something random I was thinking about.

Wrote a letter to Legion of Super Heroes (DC) back 'round 92 or 93 and it was published. I think it was issue 30 or thereabout. This was when Keith Giffin was drawing it, and it was the third or fourth series of the book.

You?

latebloomer (latebloomer), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 16:24 (twenty-one years ago)

No, but my roommate mailed beer to Garth Ennis, and he said a brief thanks in an issue of Preacher. I think it was Preacher. (?)

I had a joke published in Sparky comic.

"hello"----http://www.comune.venezia.it/icone_entrare/small/bike_red.jpeg

A Bicycle Spoke.

I got 10/- for that. (I'd have got £1 from the Dandy, but there you go)

Not published in a comic, but I wrote a letter to Evan Dorkin (Dork!, Milk & Cheese) when I was a youngster (13-14) and he wrote me a nice letter back with cartoons drawn all over it. It was quite thrilling at the time. I had no idea he would write back.

sugarpants (sugarpants), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 16:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Evan Dorkin now has a livejournal, where he'll respond to your comments. Not quite as fun, but more immediate.

He & Sarah just had a kid recently, too.

Letter published in Red Dwarf comic/magazine thingy many moons ago. It was substandard surrealism as best.

zappi (joni), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 17:24 (twenty-one years ago)

not quite the same thing but i did ask disrali(?) how his esperanto exams went at a Deadline signing once. he hadn't had the results at that time but a couple of issues later he responded in the text around the outside of his timulo strip.

koogs (koogs), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 17:30 (twenty-one years ago)

ha, D'Israeli is another of my old pals, though I don't see him more than once or twice a year these days, sadly.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 17:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I am often asked the above question... basically I once had a letter published in "2000AD" about Dr Who. I also recently had a letter published in the London Review Of Books about "Warlord".

DV (dirtyvicar), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 19:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I had a letter published in Puma Blues

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 19:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I had not one but TWO letters published in Instant Piano, which was...what, only four issues long? Yeah, it surprised me, too.

Back in 93 or so I had a series of letters published in Alternative Press complaining (in an over the top, hysterical style) about the lack of Pastels coverage. After I stopped reading the magazine they published an article about the Pastels and one the editors sent me postcard reprimanding me for not thanking them. Boy, was I bored back then.

laurence kansas (lawrence kansas), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 20:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I had a letter in Smash Hits once *embarrased look*

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 22:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I won a competition for my sister in an Australian girls surfing magazine. You had to make a barbie doll of your favorite surfer, so i made the doll and she collected the prize, even though i personally have little time for surfing or surfers. The printed photos of the doll, which was kind of cool i guess.

kate/papa november (papa november), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 22:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Trayce, how is that more embarrassing than a letter in a comic book?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 22:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Two or three in Cerebus, way back when.

Curious George Rides a Republican (Rock Hardy), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 22:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Heh good point Martin ;)

Have you ever had a letter published in an issue of a comic book?

sadly or not, i had dozens of letters published in DC comics from 1988 to 1991 or so. eventually i started getting sent advance copies of new titles for review.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 23:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 23:14 (twenty-one years ago)

two weeks pass...
cool I just found an archive of a page on the World of Spectrum website from Sinclair User which published my name as a winner in a Howard The Duck computer game competition, in 1987.

Ste (Fuzzy), Monday, 28 February 2005 14:49 (twenty years ago)

One in World's Finest back in the mid-80's. Probably two or three others as well but the WF is the one I remember because it was the first. I believe I criticized the Trevor Von Eeden art, and they still printed it! Must have been desperate for letters ...

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Monday, 28 February 2005 16:01 (twenty years ago)

I had picture of the week, in the dandy, when I was about 9.

I won a poster and a t-shirt and a dandy & beano: fifty golden years book II (signed by d. dan).

I was a beano reader, though--it was my bro, who got the dandy (boy, was he miffed).

that magazine doesn't even seem to bother printing negative letters anymore!

latebloomer: The Heavy Metal Velveeta Faction (latebloomer), Monday, 28 February 2005 16:13 (twenty years ago)

zaxxon, I thought that Trevor von Eeden art was about the best the title ever had!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 28 February 2005 16:56 (twenty years ago)

latebloomer my letters were so frothing-at-the-mouth that I believe they printed them for their entertainment value (which is why i wrote them in the first place). Also, it gave Jason P a chance to reply to them ("you need to attend bootcamp" was one reply). Looking back on it, Jason P was the father I never had.

laurence kansas (lawrence kansas), Monday, 28 February 2005 17:04 (twenty years ago)

Hey, I was 13 ... George Perez was the pinnacle for me at the time.

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Monday, 28 February 2005 20:20 (twenty years ago)

My college buddy Chris D. was the letters editor for Superman for a bit. He now edits "Nickelodeon" Magazine and makes crazee money doing a very very VERY surreal kid's mag.
