Anyone play besides Ken and I? We should get an online game going.

Big Baby Bingo (Chris V), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 17:21 (twenty-one years ago)

yeahhh!

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 17:23 (twenty-one years ago)

i've had a regular home game going for about five or six years. we play every sunday. and in the past year i've started playing in a monthly tourney here in nyc -- $50 buy-in, with an average of 50 players per tourney. last week i finished fourth, my best so far. before that: sixth and tenth.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 17:25 (twenty-one years ago)

i played in a tourney two weeks ago $60 buy in. 40 guys. I came in 15th, got my AK busted with jacks. Played a small game last saturday and won $200 from my friends. I play a lot online...pokerroom.com username letdown08 if your ever looking to play a game.

Big Baby Bingo (Chris V), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 17:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I have a weekly card game that meets regularly for six months, falls apart for six months, gets back together for six months, etc.

I'm in an off-period right now, and I kinda miss it.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 17:31 (twenty-one years ago)

while i was out of work for last month i played so much online i thought i was going to have to call gamblers anon. luckily pokerroom.com has a nice feature that you can set your monthly, weekly or daily deposit limits. which i use.

Big Baby Bingo (Chris V), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 17:36 (twenty-one years ago)

i've had a really good winning streak last month and so i haven't had to make any deposits for a while.. although i've only played pussy $5 games with amateurs (as opposed to amateurist).

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 17:39 (twenty-one years ago)

unfortunately (or fortunately) my bank doesn't let me make deposits into pokerroom, so i'm strictly a play money player.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 17:40 (twenty-one years ago)

i got my clock cleaned last month on pokerroom. i had a few good streaks going for a few days and then all of the sudden i get stuck against fools who have no idea how to play and take me out with middle pairs. never fails.

Big Baby Bingo (Chris V), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 17:43 (twenty-one years ago)

i yahoo poker sometimes. used to play with friends for small time bucks. sort of looking to start up again

come on sock it to me, Wednesday, 9 February 2005 17:46 (twenty-one years ago)

so if we do play are we going to settle on pokerroom then?

this would leave jams murphy out though unless we go for just play money games.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 17:50 (twenty-one years ago)

has anyone ever played captaincooks.com? there is no way around the pokerroom bank thing eh?

Big Baby Bingo (Chris V), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 18:01 (twenty-one years ago)

POKER!!!!!

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 18:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I've been back on the poker wagon during the last few months. We play cheap $5 games, which is great for me since I can't afford higher stakes poker right now (er, did I say "afford", of course that's not what I meant because I WIN WIN WIN, I don't have to "afford" anything ... um, yeah).

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 18:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd be up for joining in $5 games, if it gets sorted.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 18:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, once details are all figured out, I will TOTALLY suck you guys out. I'll be the noob, everyone else can be Phil Helmuth (sic).

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 18:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I will so do this. I've been missing my biweekly game ev' since I moved to New York (altho these $50 tourneys sound worth checking out, if they're ever on a day I'm not working and can convince my wife she should babysit so I can go gamble).

I'm curious, what does everybody play? It seems like Texas hold'em is everyone's default (maybe partly because that's what they play on TV), but I like 5- and 7-stud too.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 18:33 (twenty-one years ago)

99.9% Hold'em, though I'm fine w/ 5 & 7-card. A few times, someone at my real-life irregularly-schedule poker hoe-downs would try to start up w/ Omaha - after 10 minutes of that, everyone went home.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 18:36 (twenty-one years ago)

im dl captaincooks now to check it out. pokerroom lets you do private tables.

Big Baby Bingo (Chris V), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 18:46 (twenty-one years ago)

far too slow. im sticking with pokerroom.com if anyone else is interested.

Big Baby Bingo (Chris V), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

i play holdem and omaha

Big Baby Bingo (Chris V), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 18:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm scared to gameble online. Is it safe?

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 18:49 (twenty-one years ago)

sure.

Big Baby Bingo (Chris V), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 18:50 (twenty-one years ago)

gypsy if you wanna play an in-person game, you are officially invited to join mine. we have about six players, with a buy-in typically of $15 or $20. we play a mix of hold 'em, omaha 8, seven-card stud, a few wild card games and anaconda. mucho fun. email me if you're interested.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 18:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I play in two semiregular games, and have been playing cards my whole life. I don't believe in gambling, but I make an exception for low stakes poker.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 18:57 (twenty-one years ago)

(same goes for anyone else in nyc, btw)

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 18:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm normally too paranoid to play online (do poker sites have randomizers in place to keep friends/stooges from being at the same public table and helping each other?), but I'd be up for an ILX game for any reasonable amount.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 19:07 (twenty-one years ago)

hey bingo so do you want to refer me to pokerrooms? so you can get the $50 if and when i play enough??

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 19:15 (twenty-one years ago)

my email pykachu at gee mail.com

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 19:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm always down for a gamble. Count me in for any Fancy A Pokers.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 19:17 (twenty-one years ago)

yay dom! ilWWEors represent!

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 19:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm up for this after I get past work deadlines in a couple of weeks. My parents used to let me sit in with their games when I was a kid, mostly 5- and 7-card stud, but every now and then they'd play something called Between the Sheets (aka Mexican Sweat) for variety. That could get really hairy really quick, and once I won a $60 pot and was told to go watch tv.

Curious George Rides a Republican (Rock Hardy), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 19:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Big Baby Bingo (Chris V), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 19:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Big Baby Bingo (Chris V), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 19:46 (twenty-one years ago)

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 19:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Big Baby Bingo (Chris V), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 19:51 (twenty-one years ago)

i just saw flembach get taken for some $$

Big Baby Bingo (Chris V), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 19:53 (twenty-one years ago)

If anyone wants referral money for me the wooderson at gmail address is best.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 19:53 (twenty-one years ago)

still waiting for my referral to arrive gmail

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 19:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Big Baby Bingo (Chris V), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 19:56 (twenty-one years ago)

the referral is a bit longwinded, i would need to accumulate 150 player points to get it...so don't worry.

Big Baby Bingo (Chris V), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 19:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't mean to be dealt a hand!

S!monB!rch (Carey), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 19:59 (twenty-one years ago)

just got on GGpoker, had to hold some BTC while waiting for my affiliate to come through. he took forever and I lost $300 thanks to the dumb crypto market. I know it's probably keeping online poker alive, but still, fuck Bitcoin

nxd, Monday, 5 June 2023 11:18 (two years ago)

Stayed up past midnight (Pacific Time, even!) watching the last three play this out for hours. Loved it. The wholesome rail vs. the rail of mooks added to it, but mostly it was the first time I had watched an unedited 7-stud tourney for hours.

k3vin k., Monday, 5 June 2023 18:32 (two years ago)

that's a 1550BB pot which would be the biggest I've ever seen in a cash game by some measure

frogbs, Monday, 5 June 2023 18:37 (two years ago)

lmaooo "all in? is that for sure? I'm gonna go get a water"

frogbs, Monday, 5 June 2023 18:41 (two years ago)

the big blind ante makes it a little smaller effective but yeah there were some insane hands

k3vin k., Monday, 5 June 2023 18:43 (two years ago)

I haven't watched Tom Dwan in a while I had no idea he swore that much

frogbs, Monday, 5 June 2023 20:50 (two years ago)

dwan’s really the goat man

k3vin k., Monday, 5 June 2023 20:53 (two years ago)

lol I remember when he turned 21 and started playing televised games a lot of people said he'd be broke in a year

frogbs, Monday, 5 June 2023 20:56 (two years ago)

the percentage of biggest tv hands ever that hes been involved in is very high

lag∞n, Monday, 5 June 2023 21:05 (two years ago)

that High Stakes Poker hand where he bluffed Barry Greenstein and Peter Eastgate w/ QT on the T22 board is still my favorite televised poker hand. blocker bluffing wasn't really a thing back then, especially not in big 3-way pots. it really blew a lot of minds when people figured out what he was doing

frogbs, Monday, 5 June 2023 21:39 (two years ago)

its crazy how much better people are now at poker

lag∞n, Monday, 5 June 2023 23:05 (two years ago)

Yeah I think your average 25NL reg is probably better now than the high stakes pros were during the poker boom. Thankfully there still seem to be enough whales and shitty rakeback grinders that you can still turn a profit. It’s definitely harder now though. Live poker on the other hand hasn’t really changed much at all.

frogbs, Tuesday, 6 June 2023 00:45 (two years ago)

we need legal online play in order to usher in another poker boom

lag∞n, Tuesday, 6 June 2023 00:58 (two years ago)

the other day I listened to a podcast which argued that the biggest change in understanding between now and 20 years ago is in how much variance there really is, especially in PLO where it's possible to have hot or cold streaks which last years. ultimately he says that in the pre-online era it really wasn't possible to play enough hands to get a good handle on who the best players really were, and that virtually every "pro" who played big and made a lot of money pre-Party Poker was either rich enough to ride out the variance or just started on a heater. he thinks there were probably dozens of potential Tom Dwans and Junglemen out there but few of them ran as good as they did where they could really commit themselves to the game. definitely rings true for me at least, had I not run well my first few months playing online I probably would have given it up within a year. poker is so uniquely frustrating when you're on an extended downswing, it just feels like there's nothing you can do but give up.

frogbs, Tuesday, 6 June 2023 01:05 (two years ago)

whenever this thread pops up I end up watching an hour of poker highlights on Youtube and I don't know why - I haven't played a hand in a decade and I was absolutely terrible even among friends who were also bad, I don't have the attention span to play cards for more than like 20 minutes at a blackjack table.

incredible - was laughing throughout the entire section with Hellmuth and Gus. though his math on the Gus Hansen section is way off - that only applies if you get called by everyone, and if you did technically you'd only have to win once to win the tournament. I would guess just blind shoving every hand in a 6 person sit n' god you'd probably have like a 6-8% chance of winning it all.

god I used to love watching this stuff in college. better than any game show if you ask me. watching these dudes in the WSOP go on 3 day heaters, suddenly finding themselves at a featured table and allowing themselves to think just a little about the possibility of a big payout and some TV fame, only to get doinked by an 8 on the river. after which the camera just lingers on their face as they realize they will almost certainly never have this opportunity again. tough to watch I guess but still, great people-watching. also so many of them were massive dicks so it was easy to figure out who to root for.

frogbs, Thursday, 29 June 2023 14:05 (two years ago)

https://philgalfond.beehiiv.com/p/elephant-poker-room

galfond could certainly use an editor, but I completely agree. doug is an amazing player and peerless analyst (when he puts work into it…he doesn’t prep as much for his videos these days) but he’s a bully and his non-analysis videos suck

k3vin k., Friday, 30 June 2023 23:15 (two years ago)

Charlie Carrel is an antivaxxer who I had to block because he shares too much LibsOfTikTok bullshit, seems like one of the last guys who should be talking about "empathy". Regardless Doug is a total dick whose brain has been infected by YouTube disease, he's a great analytical player but shockingly unnuanced when it comes to any other topic.

the JNandez thing was real bullshit too, I primarily play PLO these days so I know his stuff pretty well, dude definitely seems legit to me. Doug feels like he's trying to be some Fantano-type personality whose appeal expands beyond poker while JNandez really is all business. dragging his name through the mud was a real dick move.

I like Galfond, like DNegs he seems like one of the actual good guys in poker, but yeah that sure was a lot of words

frogbs, Monday, 3 July 2023 14:03 (two years ago)

ten months pass...

just catching up on this doug polk is a bull story ten months later and i dont think its necessarily wrong that doug is a bully but i think theres some nuance missing in galfonds essay and other talk ive seen on the situation which is that matt berkey is a weird dick whos always "speaking his mind", prob a bit of a cry bully sitch going on here, got into a beef with doug which i dont totally know the origins of but i remember he said he was gonna play in a game doug was playing in and was talking shit like these math guys may be good online but get them on the felt where im king and well see whats up and then backed out, so berkey is beefing with doug hes pretty unlikable not totally honest he runs a coaching site thats prob not very good and doug is like this guy sucks i hate him which is a not unreasonable conclusion, but he doesnt really consider his position of power or maybe he just thinks its cool and good that hes powerful and its his right to crush berkey, whatever it is he obvs took it way too far and deserved to be called on it, but berkey jumped in the octogon and got wrecked too

lag∞n, Monday, 6 May 2024 16:00 (one year ago)

i watched an episode of that show where the players wear headphones to block out the sound so they can talk about the hands while they play and berkey and his protege were on and they were just not cool or nice guys very arrogant and lame, so i can understand how when a guy who sucks steps to you its just insulting, even by poker standards they came off as notably low quality guys

lag∞n, Monday, 6 May 2024 16:07 (one year ago)

wait a sec what is this show, feel like even if you can't hear exactly what people are saying there are still all sorts of tells you could pick up just hearing a guy talk about what he's actually thinking in a hand

I agree most big name poker players are arrogant and obnoxious, comes with the territory I guess. I mean the way the game works even the best players still lose a ton so maybe they always feel like they have something to prove. Polk in particular is a guy I wouldn't mind never seeing again.

frogbs, Monday, 6 May 2024 16:43 (one year ago)

its called poker out loud, pretty cool idea, they dont really get top players on there tho, i mean theyre much better than me but still would be cooler to hear the top guys

lag∞n, Monday, 6 May 2024 16:46 (one year ago)

you could make an argument for aldermir perhaps xp

but what a run after winning his 4th ppc - just incredible

nxd, Thursday, 17 July 2025 09:46 (seven months ago)

lag∞n, Thursday, 17 July 2025 19:34 (seven months ago)

yeah the kassouf case is pretty open and shut, you enter a tournament you agree to abide by the rulings of the floor personnel. there’s no freedom of speech or anything like that. if anything they were far too lenient with him, he honestly should have been disqualified

brony james (k3vin k.), Thursday, 17 July 2025 19:38 (seven months ago)

given he's sort of a name player I figured he had to have been way over the line, I didn't see any clips but did hear a lot of people complain he was singlehandedly ruining the broadcast
