Taking Sides - Is this an offensive statement?

So, in a horrible class I'm taking at my university, we were looking at different cultures that may be present in the classroom. It's an education class, meaning we're all working to become teachers.

Professor: "What's the difference between Peurto Ricans and Mexicans?" (The context being that we just talked about Mexicans and then started talking about PRs.)

Someone in the class: "Peurto Ricans are legal."

Class: "lol"

Is that offensive? I think it is.

Yeah, I'd say that was offensive. Now if the someone had said "Puerto Ricans are American citizens!", the offensive level would have dramatically decreased.

Just what university are you at, for curiousity's sake?

Is it more offensive than mispelling Puerto Ricans twice though?

To be honest though the original questions seems kind of stupid too.

Haha, Alex in SF, I guess you were right. I am a retard!

Mickey (modestmickey), Saturday, 12 February 2005 16:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, the original question was incredibly stupid. Just watch a university education course once and you'll understand very quickly why there's so many awful teachers.

Mickey (modestmickey), Saturday, 12 February 2005 16:33 (twenty-one years ago)

There are so many awful teachers because the concept of teaching in this country and the way schools are constructed are designed not to produce good teachers or students who think critically, but instead to generate faceless authority figures and students who blindly adhere to their rules.

The offensiveness is diminished if the class actually all, in unison, said 'lol', rather than all of them laughing.

I think even "PRs" is offensive to some people. Not that you were trying to be. it's a landmine out there.

if someone replied "haha but they all look the time" would that have been less offensive?
