What exactly would a Baptist "Men's Night Out" involve, I wonder. Cards? Gin Rummy?

Gin with Rummy, I suspect.

so, am I the only one not surprised or phased by this? The ties between religion and war have always been very intricate and tight.

I can't imagine people willing to put themselves on the front line, willing to die, without some sort of strong theological ideal making them so faithful to the duty (or alternately, an ideal that prevents them from thinking too much about their existence, which would then prevent them from wanting to increase their chance of dying.)

That said, there are people who don't fit this model, and do sign up for the reserves in hopes that they can get the benefits hoping that they'd never, one day, have to take part in a such a truly grueling, overdrawn war. I'm wondering after the Iraq war how the attitudes will change here in the U.S. -- keeping aside issues that involve forcing people into it, via a draft.

The American flag covering the cross photo actually offends me deeply... I really can't form a coherent sentence on why that whole thing is head-slappingly idiotic.

i can't be offended by it. I don't agree with it on principle, by any means. But the marriage of the symbols of Christ and American have been a paradigm to many I've seen all my life.

Yeah, I was going to say. Personally I'm inclined to think these days that propaganda of all sorts works because people want to believe it -- thus this type of nonsense.
