Happy Valentine's Day!

I love youse all :-)

Seriously, I've never given this day much thought. Is it just that it's not a big deal in Aussie, or am I missing out on something?

toraneko (toraneko), Sunday, 13 February 2005 14:17 (twenty years ago)

And back to you too, Toraneko!

It's got good and bad elements. There is pressure towards romantic gestures, which I don't think is helpful, and it can upset people who are single, but I regard it as an excuse to show my love for that special person in a slightly more extravagant way than usually feels okay. But I tell her I love her pretty much every day anyway, so it doesn't make a big difference.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 13 February 2005 14:52 (twenty years ago)

valentine's day is harmless. i dunno why people feel such hatred for it. so what if it's just an excuse for hallmark to sell cards? nobody's forcing you to buy a hallmark card!

stockholm cindy's secret childhood (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 13 February 2005 14:58 (twenty years ago)

Things to avoid: sending a card to someone you're crushing on. It's always a bad idea.

I'm one of those people who thinks that if you love someone, you should try and do sweet romantic things for them all year round. There shouldn't be one day a year when it's compulsary.

caitlin (caitlin), Sunday, 13 February 2005 15:15 (twenty years ago)

i can't believe they've moved valentine's day forward without telling me :(

ken c (ken c), Sunday, 13 February 2005 16:28 (twenty years ago)

Aw, yay for Toraneko wishes! (I hope my damn mail program didn't eat a recent message from you or anything.)

Haddaway (Matt DC), Sunday, 13 February 2005 16:37 (twenty years ago)

Happy V day, Australia and New Zealand!

Markelby (Mark C), Sunday, 13 February 2005 16:40 (twenty years ago)

we've sold quite a bit of jewellery this weekend.

stevie nixed (stevie nixed), Sunday, 13 February 2005 16:42 (twenty years ago)

I received a copy of 69 Love Songs for the first time last week, so I've suddenly realised that I'll probably spend most of Valentine's Day humming tunes from it. I'm not sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing.

(Of course, i'll spend *most* of Valentine's Day un-jamming printers and saying "no, I cannot undelete your file", because that's what I spend most of my time at work doing.)

caitlin (caitlin), Sunday, 13 February 2005 20:36 (twenty years ago)

Trayce (trayce), Sunday, 13 February 2005 22:18 (twenty years ago)

Ooooo cheap airfares on not only Virgin, but jetstar and qantas. Watch out Trayce :)

kate/papa november (papa november), Sunday, 13 February 2005 22:20 (twenty years ago)

I'm single but I like Valentine's Day in college because it's become an excuse for candy exchanges among friends and girls' nights out.

Maria (Maria), Sunday, 13 February 2005 22:23 (twenty years ago)

where is it you live exactly, Trayce...?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 13 February 2005 23:08 (twenty years ago)

Hahah ;) Melbourne! The rest is up to the resolve of the individual to work it out, then they've EARNED it ;)

(if I end up with 20 ILXors on my doorstep I'll be in trouble)

Trayce (trayce), Sunday, 13 February 2005 23:15 (twenty years ago)

I've never had a date on Valentine's Day - my only two long term-relationships were (respectively) truncated a week prior to the holiday or on hiatus during the 14th. My mom called me today and told me she wouldn't be sending me a card this year for the first time, because she was busy.

Remy (x Jeremy), Sunday, 13 February 2005 23:22 (twenty years ago)

Damn: it's not that I wouldn't fly 12,000 miles for a kiss from you, Trayce, but I suspect there isn't a way of getting to you while it is still Valentine's Day.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 13 February 2005 23:28 (twenty years ago)

I can virtually SEE Trayce's from my place so suffer in your jocks yankees.

Valentine's day is a wank. Buying flowers and springing romantic stuff spontaneously/for no arbitrary reason is a million times more valuable.

Autumn Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Sunday, 13 February 2005 23:32 (twenty years ago)

Adam I cant see you coming over to mine for a snog ;P

Yeah I'm just using today as an excuse to have a fancy dinner which we often have anyhow. There'll be a roast, some home made bread, a dessert, some nice candles and music. One of the benefits of not working at present I guess.

Trayce (trayce), Sunday, 13 February 2005 23:48 (twenty years ago)

Also Jeremy: I'd go on a valentines date with you if I could!

Trayce (trayce), Sunday, 13 February 2005 23:49 (twenty years ago)

I have had A VALENTINE'S DAY T-SHIRT made for me. It is bright red and has my face in the shape of a big heart where the real heart should be. It also reads 'Matt' on it, in a mockup of the McDonalds logo. And on the back it says "I'm lovin' him."

I will post a picture of it tomorrow.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 13 February 2005 23:54 (twenty years ago)

As we speak I am making a card out of lollypop sticks, hardened pasta shells, old coat hangers, and crepe paper

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 13 February 2005 23:56 (twenty years ago)

Katy Hill isn't going to go out with you, Ronan.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 14 February 2005 00:07 (twenty years ago)

Not when I use them to frame the sheep's heart, no.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 14 February 2005 00:09 (twenty years ago)

You want to try that John Craven. I hear he's into all sorts of shit.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 14 February 2005 00:10 (twenty years ago)

Yes but he won't be wooed by my home-made card!

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 14 February 2005 00:11 (twenty years ago)

thanks trayce!

known vaginatarian (nickalicious), Monday, 14 February 2005 14:15 (twenty years ago)

I emailed a love poem to all my friends wot I luv, and got only two delivery failures. I also got three lovely replies, one from my ex from 12 years ago to whom I gave, 12 years ago, the cd-single of Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You". Poor fella, no wonder he married someone else :-) I do like that song.

toraneko (toraneko), Monday, 14 February 2005 15:40 (twenty years ago)

D'you know what I got? My Bloke ventured out in the high winds and lashing rain yesterday to get me a dozen long-stemmed red roses, which was vair vair romantic. But (for some inexplicable reason) he chose to go out on his motorbike, and not in the car. He then discovered that he had no way of transporting said roses back, and had to stuff them down the front of his motorbike jacket. Except they were too long and he couldn't see where he was going, so he had to snap them off a bit. And then, riding back, they got quite damaged and most of the petals fell off. So this morning, instead of a dozen long-stemmed roses, I was lovingly presented with a dozen short-stemmed stems. Still, the thought was there, which is all that was wanted, really.

Busiest night of the year at work coming right up.....

Ahahaha, Matt's t-shirt-making friend turned his face into a heart. It's a beautiful t-shirt mind.

Happy Valentine's day to you all. We're going out for fat pizza and romantic cooing with the other suckers.

Happy Valentine's Day! I love some of you, and like many of you a great deal!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 14 February 2005 18:27 (twenty years ago)

one year passes...
this year more than ever before, i've noticed valentine's day slowly morphing into yet another month-long holiday season. from the looks of it, vd is now a way for retailers to relieve us of the humdrum of non-festive shopping during that downtime between xmas and easter. am i imagining this? or did the pink and red decorations start going up a whole lot earlier this year?

[believe me, the irony of reviving this thread now and thereby becoming part of the problem does not escape me.]

seven years pass...

I just heard the most ridiculously poignant love story from this lady i work with who is about 60 or so? i'm not sure of her exact age, but she's < 50. anyway, she came in to wish us a happy dia de la amistad and then casually mentioned that this is her 1 year anniversary with her boyfriend. i joked and said "now we know why you're in such a good mood lately!" (her demeanor has changed dramatically/become noticeably more buoyant tbrr) and she laughed and proceeded to tell us all about how she got together with this guy and it was just so sweet that we all hugged at the end.

happy valentine's day/dia de la amistad!
