Let's talk about asylum seekers

Whenever someone rants about asylum seekers they always seem – to my eyes – to be camouflaging a certain racism. I like asylum seekers because they piss off exactly the sort of people I want to see being pissed off. Don’t know if there’s too many of them – or what that entails though. Can’t we bring someone from Iraq in for every squaddie that we sent out there to be massacred? Perhaps we can give preference to the hot ones?

Oh well, let's not talk then.

C-Man (C-Man), Monday, 14 February 2005 10:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually we do need a thread about this, but shall we start again please?

This is a massive issue in the current election campaign but frankly I haven't seen how it affects me personally. I haven't seen any naughty illegal immigrants trying to steal my job. Maybe it's worse in coastal areas or places near aeroports and and I'm being rather naiive about the issue. Obviously there's the issue of people coming to the country in order to claim undeserved benefits/welfare etc. but surely there are enough true citizens doing this in Britain today?

Actually we do need a thread about this

i'm SURE the thorny issue of 'asylum seekers' has been discussed at length on ILE many times in the past

Calum, if you could stop mentioning "squaddies" in every single thread that would be a start

Dadaismus (Dada), Monday, 14 February 2005 11:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Why though? The two topics are interlinked. Squaddies mess up countries/ the country men and women want to escape.

Easy.

C-Man (C-Man), Monday, 14 February 2005 11:30 (twenty-one years ago)

SHUT. UP.

thanks.

dog latin (dog latin), Monday, 14 February 2005 12:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Calum doesn't particularly irritate me. The problem I have is that in his extremity he effectively lets people who are less sexist or racist take themselves off the hook. If everyone's busy going "ho ho Calum that naff fucker" they've no time to examine themselves and their own fuckedness.

Andrew (enneff), Monday, 14 February 2005 12:11 (twenty-one years ago)

What about people who are less stupid?

Dadaismus (Dada), Monday, 14 February 2005 12:14 (twenty-one years ago)

i have had to become much more obnoxious as a direct result of c-man's jiggery-pokery. thanks a bunch.

Alienus Quam Reproba (blueski), Monday, 14 February 2005 12:19 (twenty-one years ago)

What about people who are less stupid?

What? Where?

Andrew (enneff), Monday, 14 February 2005 12:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I did say less stupid

Dadaismus (Dada), Monday, 14 February 2005 12:26 (twenty-one years ago)

If jiggery-pokery is not on THE LIST over there, I'm not playing.

Penelope_111 (Penelope_111), Monday, 14 February 2005 12:26 (twenty-one years ago)

WTF? I hate sexism and racism. All of my threads are designed to poke fun at the idiots who hold these views. This is a thread in defence of asylum seekers, albeit trying to be a bit funny.

Christ, why are so many people here so blind? I've been arguing that we need to open our doors for as long as anyone. I despise our bigoted government policies.

C-Man (C-Man), Monday, 14 February 2005 12:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the essential paradox of YOU, Calum is that for all you enjoy "poking fun at the idiots", you just can't take it when "the idiots" dish it back at you. When will you ever learn? If you don't like getting it, don't dish it out!

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 14 February 2005 12:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Pash, I think by now it's perfectly clear that I'm a pretty left wing kind of person who practices equality in their day to day life and doesn't really have a harmful bone in their body.

C-Man (C-Man), Monday, 14 February 2005 12:36 (twenty-one years ago)

The problem is that a) if you're trying to be funny, nobody's laughing, and b) if you're trying to make some point, then people are missing it. Either way you should try a different approach.

Andrew (enneff), Monday, 14 February 2005 12:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't used to get annoyed by it - he even made the odd good point imho and the stuff he did say I was quite happy to accept as irony/deliberate taunting of the ILX massive but it's getting very very boring now when I click on a thread that looks interesting and it's full of crap about squaddies and faux-liberalism. VERY BORING!

dog latin (dog latin), Monday, 14 February 2005 12:44 (twenty-one years ago)

doesn't really have a harmful bone in their body.

harmful to YOU you mean

Alienus Quam Reproba (blueski), Monday, 14 February 2005 13:02 (twenty-one years ago)

have you ever revived a thread you didn't start?

i think you should revive a few threads that were started on ILE by women and black people...otherwise people will just continue to assume the worst about you

Alienus Quam Reproba (blueski), Monday, 14 February 2005 13:05 (twenty-one years ago)

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

CALUM OFF MY BEAUTIFUL THREADS (Dan Perry), Monday, 14 February 2005 16:43 (twenty-one years ago)
