Look Around You series 2

I'm surprised there hasn't been any posts about it here... a mostly pretty accurate parody of BBC TV science programmes circa 1980, which I'm more interested in than Nathan Barley if truth be told. The "Gonnis" sketch in tonight's episode was great. Opening credits look too digitally "clean", though. Anyone else been watching this?

Chriddof (Chriddof), Monday, 14 February 2005 23:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes. Serafinowicz is great, but who is this Popper guy?

Venga, Monday, 14 February 2005 23:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Interview with Robert Popper from a while back

Chriddof (Chriddof), Monday, 14 February 2005 23:23 (twenty-one years ago)

grr, missed tonight's. i agreed with Pete B on several of the points he made on Do You See, although i still enjoyed it. it's strange that many of the ideas and devices used seem too hi-tech and futuristic (e.g. the way guests enter the studio) and this goes against the rest of the show. the cast are great tho, D'Arby included. and 'Reggae Man' last week was just as good as 'Little Mouse' haha

Alienus Quam Reproba (blueski), Monday, 14 February 2005 23:32 (twenty-one years ago)

i always find it annoying when people say "i prefer the early stuff" but.. its not as good as the first series is it? feels like 10 mins of material stretched over half an hour, the cgi entering the studio bits are annoying, data bank bits unfunny blah blah. the cast are good though, D'arby being the big surprise.

zappi (joni), Monday, 14 February 2005 23:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I never saw the first series, but after seeing the first of this series it seems to have almost no redeeming qualities whatsoever! The kind of television so bad that you have to sit through it all just so you can comment on how bad it was at a later date.

Ally C (Ally C), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 00:02 (twenty-one years ago)

you hate everything tho. go on. say it.

Alienus Quam Reproba (blueski), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 01:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I hadn't seen it before, and I only made it through about ten minutes tonight before hitting channel 5's best love songs evah instead. I thought it was pleasingly accurate, but there were NO JOKES, and it moved SO SLOWLY. I felt like I'd have enjoyed re-runs of original editions of Tomorrow's World a lot more.

Nice music though. I'd buy the OST.

JimD (JimD), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 03:15 (twenty-one years ago)

it is improving. Joss Lamb's accent had me laughing last night and little things like Dougal with the extinguisher in aberdeen being the same bloke as Eddie with the extinguisher in shepherd's bush, only in a kilt. oh, and the footballs.

there is an obvious problem with lovingly recreating dull source material. especially if this source material now only exists in the memories of 30 something insomniacs. (that said, the 1997 OU program about Object Orientation the other night was just as dated but in a different way. HotJava!)

koogs (koogs), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 09:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Dud compared to series one, definitely.

(although for series one to be *completely* spot-on, it should have had a section about the Billingham chemical plant in every single episode)

caitlin (caitlin), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 09:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't see series one, but this does not look nearly as good as it could be.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 09:10 (twenty-one years ago)

i also like the fact that the ridiculous trophy that they keep showing that'll be awarded to the best invention of the series is the real one they used to use on tomorrow's world with the stone axe and the microchip (both forms of silicon, do you see?)

koogs (koogs), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 09:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Series One and Series Two are incomparable really - equally as good for different reasons. The first is more OU/Stop Look & Listen and the second is more like Tomorrow's World. Missed last night's episode but I think the second series is great for:

Synthesizer Patel ("Those bloody BASTARDS always try to nick your synthesizer")

Electric Teethbrushing (That has a side effect of mucking up your speech rhythms)

That weird song "Macachengo Alamenyo" or whatever (supposedly the most futuristic song in the world)

COBBLES! (Absolute genius this - especially the fact that it lets you rocket around in the air)

Plastic surgery ("I love it! I love it!")

The Rapping Song ("Rapping all day/Rapping all night/I'm rapping/I'm rapping/I'm rap-rap-rapping" etc).

And last but not least:

ME-DI-BOT! (this nearly gave me a prolapse)

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 10:25 (twenty-one years ago)

not funny.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 10:35 (twenty-one years ago)

you hate everything tho. go on. say it.

Alienus Quam Reproba (blueski), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 10:37 (twenty-one years ago)

It's gently amusing, not really LOL funny. Of course its slowness (pregnant pauses, general awkwardness etc) is part of the joke, no? If it twer all fast-cuts and snappy editing it would look too modern (as opposed to '80s-future modern).
I can't stop looking at Peter Serafinowicz's charecter's 'hair', I mean, wtf??

David Merryweather (DavidM), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 10:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Cobbles wasn't funny. none of it really is, but it looks lovely.

Pete W (peterw), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 10:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Cobbles was funny to an extent - i think i preferred it when LAY adhered to 'reality' more tho (it never really did i suppose but the concepts didn't seem as ridiculous as Cobbles in series 1)

Alienus Quam Reproba (blueski), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 11:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh come off it - Cobbles was marvellous! Just the name it's like a disease that could have in the past threatened the livelihoods of millions like rickets of shingles or whatever. And then the inexplicable blasting off into oblivion. You're left feeling all sorry for the poor guy who's turning into a pile of rocks but you're not told that HE CAN ACTUALLY FLY!!

And what about that guy who is head of EMI (or whatever) and is also the world champion of french kissing. "Om".

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 11:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Isn't that right Medibot?

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 12:00 (twenty-one years ago)

that wasn't directed at Stevem btw.

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 12:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I watched the first two episodes but couldn't be bothered last night. If they just stuck to spoofing a 1980 vision of the future it would be OK, but it's the surreal stuff that doesn't really work: the ghost of Tchaikovsky, the flying cobbles victim. It's well-acted and looks good but seems to have been written by 15-year-olds.

The first one had its moments: the rap song was fantastic and the bloke who was in Spaced & Green Wing complaining about the noise in his life (living in Gatwick airport with a wife and her sister who had a strange medical condition that made them scream incessantly). The second one only made me laugh when medibot said medibot.

The Horse of Babylon (the pirate king), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 12:09 (twenty-one years ago)

It's well-acted and looks good but seems to have been written by 15-year-olds.

What's the problem with that? Also, I mean surely the surreal bits are what make it funny, otherwise you may as well watch Tomorrow's World reruns as someone said upthread. It is after all a comedy programme.

As for the whines about the slow-pace, I didn't think this was a big problem. Most comedies are very slow paced in order to account for audience laughter-tracks anyway. But I do remember (before I grew to like it) Spaced having this effect on me - lots of awkward pauses and embarassed mutterings that kind of killed a lot of jokes.

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 12:16 (twenty-one years ago)

as ever i'm interested to know what IS making the people who dislike this show and/or Nathan Barley laugh, if anything...

According To Bex perhaps?

Alienus Quam Reproba (blueski), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 12:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Med-I-Bot.

It's the asides that get me, rather than the "big hitter" comedy moments. Although Rick tells me that last night they used the "thank you ants" "thants" bit again, which is really bloody lame, it's not unexpected that we've seen the first series and that recycling was very poor. The "thank you doctor - thockter" bit, I also found pushing it.

Lucretia My Reflection (Lucretia My Reflection), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 12:21 (twenty-one years ago)

hahahaha i'd forgotten about "thants"

hahahaha

Alienus Quam Reproba (blueski), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 12:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Bless you Alienus Quam Reproba.

Er, that doesn't really work does it.

"Blants"

Lucretia My Reflection (Lucretia My Reflection), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 12:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I like the way how they keep refering to 'HRH Sir Prince Charles'.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 12:35 (twenty-one years ago)

'as ever i'm interested to know what IS making the people who dislike this show and/or Nathan Barley laugh, if anything...'

I liked Outlaws and a couple of episodes of My Life In Film, but personally speaking, there just isn't enough 'Judge John Deed' to go round.

And did anybody see the C4 political awards last night? Hilarious! I never realised Boris Johnson had cribbed his entire act off his own dad.

Pete W (peterw), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 12:45 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm with jamie.

> The second one only made me laugh when medibot said medibot.

the way the doctor also said medibot in the same style but only when addressing the medibot was also funny.

> as ever i'm interested to know what IS making the people who dislike this show and/or Nathan Barley laugh, if anything...

simpsons reruns. turns out that i'd never seen treehouse IV until yesterday...

koogs (koogs), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 12:53 (twenty-one years ago)

as ever i'm interested to know what IS making the people who dislike this show and/or Nathan Barley laugh, if anything...

I'm quite liking Joey actually, but I realise this means you'll never trust my opinion about anything else in the world ever again. :)

(I didn't dislike NB though, I was pleasantly surprised by it).

JimD (JimD), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 13:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Joey was okay!

Alienus Quam Reproba (blueski), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 14:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Steve: yes, we hate everything. What's making us laugh is the people who are saying that these shows are good. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA. They're not.

Ally C (Ally C), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 18:18 (twenty-one years ago)

i know you're not made entirely of stone (cobbles strikes again)

Alienus Quam Reproba (blueski), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 18:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I like this show, it's not LOL, but I like it.

Last night the guy with the beard who came on to the sweeping up, looked a bit like T0m 3wing!

I've not seen Joey yet, I recorded it though.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 18:37 (twenty-one years ago)

joey is good.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

or funny, at least.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Curb Yr Enthusiasm makes me laugh and so does stuff that people say in real life. This show sucks but i did quite like Josie D'arby (?)

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 18:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Did someone say they found My Life in Film funny? Bloody hell. Now that is rotten. So badly done!

For the record I like this programme, the comedy is very, er, mild but it's fun to watch I think. In fact I think I even laughed out loud twice during the last episode, which is quite a high strike rate for when I watch comedies on my own.
And I'm really quite looking forward to the next episode of Nathan Barley actually.

David Merryweather (DavidM), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 19:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I was mortified at how poor the first show of this series was (the first series is an entirely different beast - Programmes For Schools And Colleges was the template: voiceover and no presenter - and the comedy was inside and outside the lovingly-crafted detail). The weak spot of the first season DVD was the 20min pilot so I feared the worst when it was clear they were going for a half-hour slot.

But...it's improved and show #3 was OK. And the little details are good enough to make me forgive some of the daftness. The Data Bank stuff unfortunately reminds of GagFax or whatever it was called in Three Of A Kind. First time around Serafinowicz and Popper practically buried material (fake Ceefax pages on the DVD, material on the BBC minisite) that was miles better. I'm dubious about the roll-call of fabulous comedy sleb mates in this series too (Enfield, Fenton-Stevens, Buxton, Lucas). Like a low-fee version of later AbFab lurching from one nauseating starry cameo to another.

RJG and Ally C can't even remember 1980 so, on this occasion, sod them.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 23:03 (twenty-one years ago)

The Data Bank stuff unfortunately reminds of GagFax or whatever it was called in Three Of A Kind.

I think it's much more like Digitiser's The Man's Daddy jokes. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if they were a direct influence - especially with the one that went "What was the most notable thing about the 1932 Grand National? The horses were all drunk". I half expected them to add "on gin" at the end.

Chriddof (Chriddof), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 00:16 (twenty-one years ago)

1980 was a hugely exciting time for alternative comedy...

Alienus Quam Reproba (blueski), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 01:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Joey is not really that funny.

gosh, what a hot potato - this will run and run...

Alienus Quam Reproba (blueski), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 01:10 (twenty-one years ago)

My girlf didn't really find this show very funny but then she's a couple of years younger than me and I wonder whether she remembers these kind of programmes being on television? I definitely remember watching the Open University, Stop, Look & Listen and Tomorrow's World either at school, when I was off sick or in the evening from the ages of about 5-12 therefore I can relate to it.

dog latin (dog latin), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 10:13 (twenty-one years ago)

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 10:34 (twenty-one years ago)

yes

dog latin (dog latin), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 10:53 (twenty-one years ago)

i'd hate to think age really was a factor, esp. when you're only talking about a couple of years difference.

my startling controversial new theory: Scottish men are the hardest to amuse (thing is tho i don't think it's brilliant or anything at all, just like most things there will be a couple of funny bits here and there).

Alienus Quam Reproba (blueski), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 11:52 (twenty-one years ago)

It is, admittedly funnier if you have a spliff first.

dog latin (dog latin), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 12:06 (twenty-one years ago)

didn't realise until yesterday that gelg, who do all the music, was the two presenters. they were on that radiophonics workshop documentary last year talking about it all sounding like music for spiders (which is so going to be the name of my lp if i ever get around to learning how to make any kind of noise worth recording) so i should've guessed they had more than a passing interest but...

koogs (koogs), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 12:46 (twenty-one years ago)

last night's was very patchy but i liked the 'scary image' and it's re-occurrence (predictable but still funny), and something else i've forgotten already.

'Music For Spiders' is a good title.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 11:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I really liked the 1940's film with the giant bird, and the Human Dustbin eyeing up the fat monster. I also like the idea of St. Michael's Meal.

Chriddof (Chriddof), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 14:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes! the giant bird! that was it! "give him my love" - probably the best bit in the show. St Michael's Meal also good.

Clive Pounds (blueski), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 14:09 (twenty-one years ago)

it was a weird episode because generally it seemed a bit flat apart from these three or four things which were genuinely comedy gold.

Sven Bastard (blueski), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 14:10 (twenty-one years ago)

But it's funnier than you initially remember..I liked that one of the meals was a plate of fried eggs, with walnuts on the side. There should be more walnuts on telly.

This whole series was pretty rubbish.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 7 March 2005 22:36 (twenty years ago)

The thing about this show is that you can just tell that they had a lot of fun writing the script and coming up with the ideas. Somehow I can't imagine the writers of something like Nathan Barley or the Office sitting around the typewriter giggling with childish glee at what they'd written.
Not to put these shows down - it's a different style of writing but it's something about the name "Partario" or the word "Thockter" that just makes me giggle to myself and that's why the writers keep putting it this in - because they find it hilarious.

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 09:57 (twenty years ago)

I just saw this for the first time last night - I enjoyed it in a silly, occasional chuckle kind of way. I'm not sure I'd feel the same way after an entire series though.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 10:06 (twenty years ago)

I think it recovered very well from the duff first episode; I still prefer the approach of the first series, but there was no faulting the presentation (Serafinowicz's unerring Michael Roddisms at the centre of it all). Where did they lift the Prince Charles from? Some Prince Of Wales Award For Innovation show?

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 10:36 (twenty years ago)

Probably from old Tomorrow's World footage - he used to come in every year to give out that award (it was a replica of the real TW award, which probably helped in the editing phase). I thought the first episode was terrible as well, but it did get better as it got sillier ("England's second sun" and Eastbourne being highlights).

Synthesizer Patel needs bigger locks…

carson dial (carson dial), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 12:37 (twenty years ago)

Did Sir Prince Charles really say "maseltov!" to the winners, or was that just CGI?

Huey (Huey), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 12:58 (twenty years ago)

the Prince Charles thing actually seemed really impressive. i presume Serafinowicz did the voice. i think Simon Pegg narrated the 'Birds Of Britain' film tho could also have been Peter.

DLC Soundsystem (dog latin), Thursday, 13 March 2025 08:06 (eleven months ago)

I think there's a particular type of mid-2000s reality tv show that has a distinctive enough style that you could imitate it and people would 'get' it? But maybe tv styles have stayed more similar because the internet is where the energy has been for the last two decades? You could imagine someone making something in the style of an early youtube video that everyone immediately registers as archaic looking, for example.

I recently rewatched one of the Adam and Joe 'People Place' bits (from 2000 I think?) and was surprised by how not-dated it looked, so maybe crap daytime tv at least hasn't changed all that much

Platinum Penguin Pavilion (soref), Thursday, 13 March 2025 09:25 (eleven months ago)

That's a good point. I wonder if there are many examples of retro-spoof websites etc, outside of stuff like vapourwave / Aero Fruiter aesthetics?

― DLC Soundsystem (dog latin)

tons. tons and tons and tons. do you know the game "hypnospace outlaw"? that's definitely very early-internet retro. "retro" hasn't quite caught up to the '00s yet but there's a lot of '90s retro websites. i was actually talking with a friend recently about tv that copies the '90s retro feel. i'm not the best person for that, but "the pink opaque" is a spot-on version of that.

you _definitely_ could parody '00s media. shit, i didn't watch NTSF:SD:SUV::, but it would be very doable.
