I've loved the movie Clue for a long time. I used to take it out multiple times from my local video store as a kid, and am used to all the plot tricks, like counting the bullets as you go along. The characters and the actors who played them are pretty firmly implanted on my brain. Lesley Ann Warren is sexy as hell, Christopher Lloyd as a bumbling Professor Plum, Martin Mull as the bland Colonel Mustard, Michael McKean as the hapless Mr Green (minus Hubbins wig), Elaine Brennan as Mrs Peacock, and Madeleine Kahn as the faceless Miss White. And lastly, who could forget, Mr. Boddy. The man who apparently set them all up, the man who owned the mansion they were summoned to, the man who knows everyone but no one him. I think there was a close camera shot on his shoes as he walks into the room -- lizard skin or something. Dark hair. There's also that scene where his body is found in the bathroom when Mrs Peacock goes to 'powder her nose' which draws the crowd out into the big hallway to rescue her. But as the movie reminds us later, 'One of them wasn't here. But which one was it?'

So then tonight, I happen to be watching The Decline of Western Civilization and there he is -- Mr. Boddy. Same dark hair and features, but he's bald. I did a doubletake, and then I saw that it was defintely him. He was the singer of FEAR, and LA punk band from the late 70s/early 80s.

57 7th YOUR MOM (calstars), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 02:04 (twenty-one years ago)

yes, they were right wing. ving was in a bunch of other movies too.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 02:08 (twenty-one years ago)

since this thread is sort "your intro to lee ving," I'll tell my story.

when I was 21 I worked for about 3 days for the sierra club doing canvassing. needless to say banging on doors in outer suburbia asking for money for "the nation's oldest and largest environmental group" was demoralizing, BUT i got to develop a crush on this knockout peroxided tattooed girl who, it turned out, was 17, and, it turned further out, had a 28 year old russian punk boyfriend named yevgeny. anyway, they were good people and took me to a party, I was (and still am) pretty vanilla, wet behind the ears, fresh off bus, etc, and i remarked lamely, drunkenly, that the more "extreme" (and i think i used those words) a person looks, the more likely they'll be really polite. yevgeny talked forEVER with me about lee ving, how "fahking ink-redibahl" he was, how punk these days is no good. i've still never checked out Fear.

man, yeah.

The Argunaut (sexyDancer), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 15:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I did that shit job for a couple of weeks myself. I was very bad at it. What's more, I can't stand the kind of people who are good at it.

Fish fingers all in a line (kenan), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

If you made it past two weeks, you'd have been there longer than 90 percent of the staff.

MORE BEER WITH FEAR

Clue > Fear > MD.45 (or whatever the name of the LEE VING/MEGADETH SUPAGROUP that I haven't thought of for years was)

great band, AWFUL politics, but great band

I don't know if I'd even call it "politics". They're just wind-up artists.

Lee was also in: "Streets of Fire," "The Wild Life" and the sleazy owner of the Zanzibar in "Flashdance".

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 16:16 (twenty-one years ago)

...which is not to say that they weren't utter idiots, but that they weren't necessarily staunch right wingers. They knew what would piss people off, so they happily obliged.

Great, great band, though.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 16:17 (twenty-one years ago)

And I thought "Clue" was pretty poor, actually.

Let's not forget his performance in DUDES.

I have never been able to decide who had the cooler name in American punk, Lee Ving or Tesco Vee.

Helltime needs to post to this thread.

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 15 February 2005 16:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Belushi liked Fear and got them to play on SNL. They did "New York's All Right (If You Like Saxophones)," or whatever that song is called.

Re:Music people in Clue

Jane Wiedlin from The Go-Gos plays the singing telegram girl that gets shot in the face.

i thot it was through the chest but whatever.

Alex, you're dead to me.

Sorry, man, but it's just not a very good film. I'd sooner recommend "Murder By Death" for that sort've farce. Way superior.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 23:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think I have any sense of objectiveness when it comes to Clue, I've seen it too many times over too many years and I know too many people who have it memorized. I will check out Murder By Death though.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 15:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Re Decline of Western Civ, I occasionally like to sing the Fear ending of the Star-Spangled Banner at ballgames: "And the hooooo-mos too."
