Does anyone know how long it takes for oil paint to dry...?

Simon H. (Simon H.), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 21:20 (twenty years ago)

It dries quickly, I think.

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 21:22 (twenty years ago)

About two months or so before it's fully dry, depending on how thick you've painted it and how traditional the paint is (newer paints with weird fillers are often formulated to dry quicker, especially if they're college-grade) and what you've mixed it with.

It'll look dry earlier than that, but don't trust it. Paint's a liar.

haha

just ignore me

I dunno, but I hear that watching paint dry can be a really fun way to pass the time!

What's that acryllic type paint called that mostly designers use, because it dries a flat colour?

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 21:55 (twenty years ago)

enamel?

Who did release magic family out from the base of $499 (deangulberry), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 21:58 (twenty years ago)

No, it's something else. I remember having to buy it in my graphic design course but this was like 10 years ago. I hated it but we were told we had to use it, I was more confident with acrylics. Oil paint takes fucking ages to dry.

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 22:02 (twenty years ago)

Oil paint can dry in hours if you need it to.

Am I thinking of 'Gouache'? spelling might be bollocks

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 22:07 (twenty years ago)

Gouache is an opaque watercolor.

ah, that's why I had so much trouble using it then. thanks!!

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 22:11 (twenty years ago)

Ya, Gouache is what you're thinking of, Ste.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 22:15 (twenty years ago)

Yeah you can get additives to speed up the drying just like you can get additives to slow down the drying.

YOU CAN ALSO GET A HEAT GUN TO MAKE THE "PAINT" DRY INSTANTLY

CRAZY ALIEN PAINT

Who did release magic family out from the base of $499 (deangulberry), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 22:45 (twenty years ago)

THAT IS VERY EXCITING NEWS DEAN

I've seen the heat gun thing before, but I'm not going to sink that much money into paints I can't mix with others (or with a medium from another brand?), when they only come in a couple dozen colors and a token pinch of reds. It all depends on what you want it for, though.

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 22:55 (twenty years ago)

I was kidding. I'm sure these are crap.

I find ordinary household hairdryers work pretty well.

kate/papa november (papa november), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 23:04 (twenty years ago)

I did not know you were a painter Tep! Man of many talents indeed ;)

I really should get back into some art. And yes Kate I will get that scanner too and do my Snail comic ;)

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 23:06 (twenty years ago)

Awesome! That's so good to hear Trayce!

kate/papa november (papa november), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 23:09 (twenty years ago)

I just do abstract stuff, I'm not sure I'd call it a talent :) Lots of smearing and scraping and hitting things with other things that have paint on them. When I get around to updating my site this month or next, I'm going to put up some photos of recent things. The best ones are so dark that I'm not sure they'll show up.

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 23:10 (twenty years ago)

Smearing and scraping and splatting paint around is half the fun!

I used to do these strange surrealist egg-heads on tree trunk things in oils. I wonder where those paintings are. At my parent's probably.

I have Painter and a digital pen... somehow its not the same tho.

This is as close as I could get to ok using digital oils:

WHA

Oooh, that's cool, though. Man, I was going to paint today, but I have so much shit to do. Maybe Thursday. I have this kind of triptych thing I want to do, if I can figure out where to keep it while it's drying.

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 23:20 (twenty years ago)

Also...I kindof got in to the painting, and not only are my hands now blue, but I have this weird ache on my right index finger...any ideas why?

Simon H. (Simon H.), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 03:12 (twenty years ago)

AIDS, probably.

The blue comes from the paint tho.

What's that acryllic type paint called that mostly designers use, because it dries a flat colour?

Flashe.

If you want oils to dry rapidly you can mix an alkyd-based medium in small quantities to your paint. Damar varnish will speed up the drying time (to the touch). Both will make your paint glossy. Cobalt driers & Japan driers should be avoided, but if you use them do not add more than one tiny drop to your paint mixture.
