C'mon, we've all done this, usually while out with our longtime significant others. And we've all giggled about it after the fact.

I always like to imagine that they met through the personal ads.

oh i do this all the time!! picking out the bad dates is another winner. or the couples that are obviously running out of steam, staring at each other, looking out the window. or deciding which of them cheating, or has. i'm very lonely.

My mother always thought it was very easy to pick out the people on their first dates. Neither of them order anything that could be considered a messy food, and they kind of talk with their hands around their mouths to "hide" any food that might theoretically be in their teeth while they eat.

...or to "hide" any teeth that should be theoretically in their mouths but aren't.

Oh man, it's really embarrassing. I can never help listening in, though.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 18 February 2005 18:03 (twenty years ago)

I'm way too aware of this sort of thing, and therefore very aware if I'm on a first date. I always imagine people are listening in, and I know I'm not being paranoid!

At dinner the other night, I was witness to the "boyfriend meeting the girlfriend's parents for the first time" dinner. It was funny because he seemed like the artsy type, with interesting glasses and unusual sideburns, but he was dressed up semi-nice with tucked-in button-up shirt and khakis. Unfortunately, I couldn't really hear the conversation.

man I hope he fuxored that dinner, i I hate unusual sideburns.

One of my favorite eavesdropped conversations recently was the "mom and daughter planning the daughter's wedding." It was cute: I think the mom came in from the suburbs and met her daughter at the coffee shop. But there was also lots of amusing "well, you know why we can't invite them" talk.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 18 February 2005 18:10 (twenty years ago)

the fun comes with realizing other people are listening in and then making up some weird shit to talk about

You don't have to hear the conversation to know if people are on their first date, it's all in the body language. That's what makes it so fun to watch. It's easy to distinguish polite conversation between strangers from realy conversation between longtime friends or couples.
