THIs is how these drugs seem to work on me. WHat th e hell is wrong with me!

Mike Hanle y, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Isn't it the case that people with that Attention Deficit hyperactive thingy are calmed down by stimulants (hence the prescribing of amphetamine-like Ritalin)?

scott, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Yes. Psychologists tend to find a lot of people who get taken to rehab for "upper" drugs have some sort of hyperactivity/bipolar disorder, actually, at varying extremes - self-medication.

Ally, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Uh oh!I guess its off to Betty Ford for me. :(

Mike Hanle y, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Caffeine often used to calm me down. I thought it was because I was so addicted that it was assuaging my jones.

Oh MAN, I can't take it any more. All this talk of coffee, I'm off to make me a fresh pot.

masonic boom, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

THe more you ignore coffee, the closer it gets.

Mike Hanle y, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

We will now test this theory. I have been very MANIC today. (some of you may have noticed) We shall see if the coffee calms me down. I know that there is no way that it is jonesing for caffeine, because I have got off caffeine entirely.

(If I get hooked back on coffee because of this experiment, I will KILL YOU ALL!!!)

masonic boom, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Don't worryKate. Sip. That's it, goo d girl. A bitmore now..lovely! Let it seep into your brain..slowly...feel the change come over you ...

Mike Hanle y, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I would call you EVIL except for the fact that it feels so good. I really do feel invigorated and calm and ready to face the outside world.

masonic boom, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

My Kingdom for a Capuccino. Coffee makes the world go around. Without it there would never have been the Age of Enlightenment or Jazz.

Mike Hanle y, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Cappucino is best when made with skim milk, fyi.

Ally, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

In your opinion. By the way, no one beats ME at making capuccinos. I was the prodigy. Yes I worked at Starbucks. Angry? DOn't worry, I subverted from within.

Mike Hanle y, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Mike: Before or after you sold the stock options?

JM, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I like the idea of subverting coffee myself.

"Can I have a Double Latte Subverted Grande?"

"Sure. To go?"

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I dint buy their stupid stocks. What a crock of shit that idea was, to make us feel we were "partners". I hate those Seattlian reptiles. DO you belive on efucking lady would actually ask us to make her drin kat a certain temperature? it was like 138 degreees or something. I mean we had thermometers, but still....fucky Yuppi e trash

Mike Hanle y, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

When i was a yoof i was prescribed Ritalin. It worked like speed. A rambunctious socially inapproite youth on speed lasted a week.

anthony, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Starbucks makes the most godawful coffee on the planet, for fuck's sake. I can't even go there, if I do I have to get a chai tea latte with soy because the coffee is unbearable to the nth degree. Skim milk makes for stiffer, more substantial foam, for the record.

Ally, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Their beans are good. French Roast beans. Few others roast so dark. I must have it nearly incinerated or its no good. Roast em high!

Mike Hanle y, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Indie is better in everything inculding coffee shops.

anthony, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

That's why they're so bitter - it's disgusting. They wouldn't need to put so much damn milk and sugar and carmel and chocolate and etc etc etc into their drinks if they'd get some decent beans.

Ally, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

You're just too tarty already. Thats why YOU need caramel.

Mike Hanle y, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Are you saying you want to cover me in caramel?!?! I'm officially worried.

Ally, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

You can only be covered in caramel if I'm allowed to be present. If only to hear the creative explosions of bile that will be aimed at the perpetrator, as opposed to any prurient interest, of course.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Ned, I'm telling your girlfriend on you.

Ally, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Of course, Ned.

I used to drink 6-packs of soda a day as a wee lad. I think I'm still sweatin' the after-effects. Now, I try & stick with either orange soda or decaf coffee - or, should I say cream & sugar with a pinch of decaf. Alcohol just makes me more charming & funny. And prettier. And a better public speaker. (Swear to God, that last part is so true, it's frightening.)

Ned Raggett, Friday, 13 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Many orange sodas have caffeine in them.

Josh, Friday, 13 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Except in canada where only colas can have caffeine.

anthony, Friday, 13 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Nick, Friday, 13 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Orange pop . It is not supposed to have caffine. You guys are nuts.

anthony, Friday, 13 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I reckon we should have a cappuccino making competition, and *I* will be the judge. MOOOOORE coffee, pleeeaaaasse... ::Kate bounces off walls::

In the UK, where everything is meet and right and proper, our orange soda contains not just caffeine, but nutrasweet and SACCHARINE, as well. Not even just diet sodas, but all Tango. No WONDER people have to feed the Tango inside, that thing is a fucking tumour from all the saccharine Tango drinkers have been injesting over the years. I mean, that stuff is banned by the Geneva convention and all, but it's in everything.

And there's caffeine in Irn Bru, too, which is neither cola nor orange soda (though it is certainly orange). Bubblegum and rust. YUUMMMMM!!!

masonic boom, Friday, 13 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Kate we all know that cappuccino is for lightweights who need to dilute their coffee, make it espresso and bring it on!!!

Mike Hanle y, Friday, 13 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Is there saccharine in all sodas in the UK? UK Sprite tastes like diet with a tablespoon full of sugar dissolved in it. SO terribly sweet.

well im in the uk - and for the record I dont think i can have caffine cos sometime after drinking a coffee or redbull (caffine, taurine, energy energy energy etc. drink - "redbull gives you wings!") my throat tenses ip like im gonna throw (vomit. but im sat here at work staring at a can of irn-bru that i bought at a trial price of just 19pence (1/5 of a £pound) hoping that its coffee not caffine i cant take. why does it have to have caffine anyway? it tastes so damn good. ps. who knows waht the ingredient "AMMONIUM FERRIC CITRATE" is - is it rust? ok now i dont want it at all - rust or no rust, i dont fancy feeling sick all afternoon just cos it tastes nice and cost only 19pence! ok - who wants a can of irn-bru purchased at a UK food market onm 2 may 02 - just picked it up to see how much it weighs, in case i feel nice enough to acually pay the postage to you, and its ice cold, like very very cold - just a sip a day and i might be ok, maybe not - oh well - if you email me today i think i will send it to you by post for free! but what if im not allegic to caffine? hang on, no i cant drink coke for sure so, it looks like one of you lot are getting my irn-bru. 1st come 1st serve!

holly coe, Thursday, 20 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Do people really get affected by caffiene? Like if you drink coffee, you feel all up? This doesn't happen to me - I can drink coffee, Coke, Red Bull etc and not be affected. (I got a bit worried the other weekend because I was v.tired and tried taking Pro Plus and it says "do not take more than 12 in 24 hours" and I took about 16 in 6 hours and still felt sleepy. I was worried in case my heart exploded or something)

jamesmichaelward, Thursday, 20 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

It's possible to become so habituated to caffeine that one coffee/tea/soda doesn't make much of a recognizable effect.

From the Frequently Asked Questions About Caffeine page:

"Basically, overdosing on caffeine will probably be very very unpleasant but not kill or deliver permanent damage. However, People do die from it."

During one all-nighter I gave myself a caffeine/theophylline overdose from repeated cups of tea. It felt as unpleasant as described in this FAQ.

Everything winds me up (substance-wise) except pot which makes me pass out after a hystercial coughing-and-asthma-inhaler fit.

Alcohol can especially flare up my manic side. which is really unpleasant since my mania manifests with hostility, aggressiveness and negativity. This is probably why bipolars aren't supposed to drink.

I was all cranky and really fuckin' wired up this morning so I took a sudafed (pseudoephedrine, kinda like speed). I now feel really calm and alert.

So um. Is something wrong with me or what?

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 23 May 2003 03:04 (twenty-one years ago) link

well yeah but not because of that

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 23 May 2003 03:10 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'm just ADHD enough that pseudoephedrine acts exactly like ephedrine on me. Which is to say, like mild acid. Opens the bronchial tubes, but also my irises, makes me feel weird and disconnected and tweaky. And since pseudoephedrine is in most cold medications, I don't take cold medecine. Nyquill keeps me awake all night, and Theraflu does awful unpleasant things to me. It's terrible to be sick, mildly tripping, and completely unable to sleep.

But I'm not so ADHD that stimulants level me out. Coffee and tea and... um... other things make me tweaky, too. I'm a world of tweak, really. This is part of the reason I always have a beer before I write anything. It's one of the only things that calms me enough to let me focus. Four beers, on the other hand, is a disaster. My life is a delicate balancing act.
