cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 13:04 (twenty years ago)

i used the DS the other day omg it's cute and great. although i have a feeling sony one will be more powerful and have bigger games etc. but the stylus is fun.

I need a DS. PSP is expensive and prone to scratchings and can wait.

Autumn Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 13:21 (twenty years ago)

My thinking when I was younger was that I had to choose Nintendo or Sega. But now that I'm an adult I'd just buy both.

57 7th (calstars), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 14:11 (twenty years ago)

At least with the DS I can play a TON of pretty good games already. None of the launch titles for either look like they're worth considering. The DS may have networkable Command & Conquer, and will certainly have the better RPG/adventure/tactical sims and that sort of thing. The PSP will have First Person Shooters, which to me is all a lot of paint drying that somehow also manages to cause distinct feelings of motion sickness after a while. So it's very clear to me which one is superior, and my fiancee besides being totally gorgeous also has incredibly good sense when it comes to christmas presents, ergo = I win.

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 16 February 2005 14:21 (twenty years ago)

Dude, I hope you're not waiting till December!!!!!

fuck! BATTERY LIFE MAN. Sony is sitting on the new Game Gear.

he does guitar with his mouth lmao mint (ex machina), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 14:56 (twenty years ago)

I already got mine, dumbass.
What do you think I been playing FF2 and Minish Cap on?
A GBA SP? That's for college students. I am a young urban professional.

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 16 February 2005 15:17 (twenty years ago)

The battery life is a good point. My DS puts up with not being charged for huge lengths of time since I play it without sound. With my weekly train ride I'd have to be plugging in the PSP on every trip!

The battery life on the PSP is 8.5 hours! And it's rechargable. Like, how long is yr commute?

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 17:05 (twenty years ago)

I'm not saying definitely PSP here, or anything, by the way. I'm just trying to correct the battery-life thing, 'cos I've heard it loads of places.

This choice is about chance-encounter WIRELESS THROWDOWNS in public places. That's the shit I want.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 17:08 (twenty years ago)

DS!

I will get one, I'll still be crap at video games, but I'll have two screens and a weird pencil thing!

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 17:38 (twenty years ago)

from lik-sang:

Loading Times

Loading time and battery life seem to be the big factors which decide
about the PSPs success or failure in many gamers eyes right now. While
we can't comment on the battery life as of yet, latest reports from
Japan about loading times on demo units that actually have access to
the games are as follows:

Ridge Racers:

• From power off to Namco logo and title: 16 seconds
• From selecting car/track to start the race: 14 seconds
• Exit the game back to car/track selection: 10 seconds

Dokodemo Issho:

• From power off to PSP logo and title: 20 seconds
• Starting game from title screen: 10 seconds
• Going back to title screen: 5 seconds

Mojipittan:

• From power off to title screen: 20 seconds
• No more waiting time

Minna no Golf:

• From power off to PSP logo and title: 24 seconds
• From character selection to start: 19 seconds
• Waiting between courses: few seconds only

The interface/menu of Minna no Golf seems to be very slow reacting,
with people even hinting that this could be a problem of the
pre-release version only.

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 16 February 2005 17:42 (twenty years ago)

chance encounter wireless throwdowns!

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 17:48 (twenty years ago)

Maybe I will wait a few years for Liquid Fuel cells to become commonplace.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 17:48 (twenty years ago)

Plus there ain't no way I'm taking my DS out in public! What if a big kid tries to steal it offa me?

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 17:49 (twenty years ago)

That sounded rude, sorry.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 17:51 (twenty years ago)

4 hrs each way on weekends. Plus daily commute.

Battery life was one of the things I looked at when making this purchase. Battery life and compatibility with other things, since the native games for both systems suck huge amounts of goat balls right now. Nintendo DS won on both of 'em. I dunno why the fuck PS is even trying, I mean they have the market on regular gaming systems locked the shit up, it's kind of like why are people like Bill Gates even considering going into the MP3 player market at this point sort of thing. Let Nintendo do what it does best, and PS do what it does best, they should not be trying to make babies with each other or something.

With the Nintendo DS you can have the MANGA LAWYER EXPERIENCE

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 16 February 2005 18:04 (twenty years ago)

oh my!

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 18:06 (twenty years ago)

I want a DS, but where the hell can you get one? I haven't seen any in stores around here.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 18:23 (twenty years ago)

Hint: Sales tax does not apply to mail-order transactions that cross state lines.

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 16 February 2005 18:26 (twenty years ago)

yeah all of Nintendo DS's native games are creepy.

Also, hint: real actual online retailers don't have the DS either 99.9% of the time. You're going to have to buy it from the video game world equivalent of a scalper unless you somehow magically luck out and happen to be there when the 3 per month that get shipped to, like, Target show up and grab one.

Allyzay Dallas Multi-Pass (allyzay), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 18:46 (twenty years ago)

Read a fucking book!

Sasha (sgh), Thursday, 17 February 2005 02:30 (twenty years ago)

I did. Now I want fun.

Autumn Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 17 February 2005 03:18 (twenty years ago)

"contraditions"

Un investigador del siglo XXI (AaronHz), Thursday, 17 February 2005 04:50 (twenty years ago)

the DS is retailing at £99.99. I'd guess the PSP to be about £149.99.

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 18 February 2005 15:16 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
mmmm, lovely lovely psp - got one at circuit city here in Dallas with three games (wipeout, tony hawk and nba) all for 215 quid, it's bloody gorgeous, plus it turns out that the web browser is buried in the code of wipeout = nice

ceebee, Friday, 1 April 2005 22:37 (twenty years ago)

the psp is so cool.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Friday, 1 April 2005 23:42 (twenty years ago)

you are so gay!

absolutego (ex machina), Saturday, 2 April 2005 00:09 (twenty years ago)

I want a DS something awful. I like Amusing games more than Involving games, and that seems like it's going to be the DS' main strength (Mario 64, all the drawing games, Animal Crossing ONLINE OMG, rumored SMASH BROTHERS OMG OMG OMG). Plus the GBA backwards compatibility is a big help since I hear the last Sonic game was a bunch of fun.

Downside: apparently the DS is getting a lot of good RPGs, which sucks for me since now I'm going to be lectured forever about how K-Classic a system it is. Dick-measuring contests about video game platforms make me most hateful.

Oh, and what's the deal with wireless connectivity with both systems? Does that mean that you'll never be able to play either one on a plane?

James.Cobo (jamescobo), Saturday, 2 April 2005 23:45 (twenty years ago)

I've been worrying about that, you can turn off the wireless functionality though, which is what I'll be doing when we fly back next week.

to report so far - nba isn't the greatest - graphics are (relatively) poor and it's just not up to EA nba scratch, I've still found it playable though. Haven't played tony hawks too much but wipeout..... bloody amazing, really fast and very pretty.

one month passes...
I can't decide.

cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 16:45 (twenty years ago)

I kinda like the Yoshi game.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 17:34 (twenty years ago)

I want to start my own company to develop games for the DS.
That is actually all I want to do with my life.

I have seen more games for the N-Gage that interest me than I have for the PSP.

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 10 May 2005 18:04 (twenty years ago)

Hahaha holy shit
Black & White coming to DS & PSP

(The headline on Joystiq was "Slap your cow on the bus" which is hilarious to me, because I keep imagining people saying it out loud in different comedy accents and can't stop)

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 10 May 2005 18:12 (twenty years ago)

Is this GBA Lego Star Wars for real?? GBA, not DS?

Zebra, Alpha Go! (cprek), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 18:24 (twenty years ago)

No, those shots are from the console versions of the game.

the gba version doesn't look bad at all though honestly
http://www.gamespot.com/gba/action/legostarwars/screenindex.html

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 10 May 2005 18:30 (twenty years ago)

When you slice up a battle droid, it falls apart into individual Lego bricks. When you run across an object that transforms into something else, the individual Lego bricks disassemble and reassemble right before your eyes.

HOTT

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 10 May 2005 18:31 (twenty years ago)

OK, yeah even the GBA shots looks pretty good. There are quite a few games for the GBA that I think I'd enjoy. I might just buy a GBA.

Zebra, Alpha Go! (cprek), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 18:38 (twenty years ago)

I STILL haven't seen a DS game I want to get, actually, I've just been playing a bunch of awesome GBA titles on it! Backwards compatibility is the best feature ever on anything.

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 10 May 2005 18:52 (twenty years ago)

i'm addicted to zookeeper. i used to play it on the comp so i figured it'd be nice to have a ds and play it on that. no shit. i'm pretty good at it - except quest. until now. i just managed to get the hard mode on. i LOVE the ds but i'll probably get the psp as well. i'm a complete gadget freak. *sigh*

nathalie in a bar under the sea (stevie nixed), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 18:56 (twenty years ago)

Touch Kirby looks maybe good!

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 19:51 (twenty years ago)

Sweet, I'll get Lego Star Wars for the GBA since I still can't believe it didn't come out on Gamecube.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 20:00 (twenty years ago)

Our household now owns, between us, two DSs and a PSP. We R SO COOL. Ahem.

Browsing the web with the PSP is fun. Playing two player yoshi is fun too.

JimD (JimD), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 21:48 (twenty years ago)

we're a two PSP household :)

and we still haven't linked them up for some reason, they're beautiful things though

ceebee, Wednesday, 11 May 2005 11:43 (twenty years ago)

well obviously I'll be getting a PSP purely for the return to Liberty City GTA game. and thats probly about it.

Ste (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 11:51 (twenty years ago)

If I were a developer for the Nintendo DS the first thing I would do would be to include a stylus with my games that had a little elastic loop attached right at the back, so that you could lasso your thumb and quickly switch back and forth between the buttons and the touchscreen.

Fucking ridiculous oversight. Every game that comes out for the DS until they fix that is basically handicapped.

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 11 May 2005 16:24 (twenty years ago)

fuck smallness!

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 17:47 (twenty years ago)

I don't know tombot, I feel quite sophisticated dangling the stylus out of my mouth like Humphrey Bogart when I'm using the buttons.

astropatty (adr), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 18:03 (twenty years ago)

Obviously the next popular accessory for people like us will be fitted designer thimbles with angled plastic tips

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 11 May 2005 18:06 (twenty years ago)

I have decided.

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 12 May 2005 08:19 (twenty years ago)

Apostate, Czn?

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Thursday, 12 May 2005 10:45 (twenty years ago)

OK I am back from dictionary.com and so I can say: no way!

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 12 May 2005 16:54 (twenty years ago)

I am so psyched for "advance wars: dual strike"!

cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 22 May 2005 09:01 (twenty years ago)

three months pass...
turns out katamari isn't coming out on the DS either?!

why haven't the homebrew folx been able to hook up my DS to the wireless internet yet?

and as much as I don't like sucking satan's cock the ability fr PSP to run emulators is actually a pretty big draw for me

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 1 September 2005 21:30 (twenty years ago)

Katamari Damacy has not been announced for the DS? HAHA?

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 1 September 2005 21:32 (twenty years ago)

sorry I probably didn't need to revive two handhelds threads
