This is a celebration, bitches.

I am hoping against hope to go to a game when I'm in MA in May. Which team plays closest to the Berkshires?

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 17:27 (twenty years ago)

IT will be a major celebration when the Red Sox receive their World CHampion rings right in front of the Yankee mother fuckers and the yankee mother fucking fans. Hey yankees you signed an eagle.

THE RED SOX, Mark.

Big Baby Bingo (Chris V), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 17:29 (twenty years ago)

This is a thread of joy. And of ladies who come to anticipate men in tight pants. And of well-pitched 3-2 matinees on a wednesday.

I Love Baseball:

Speaking of, the ILB annual fantasy league will be happening again and there is one extra managerial spot if you wish to test yourself against the likes of jblount and mr.diamond/stormydavis.

What's the over/under on games until the Mets' dreams collapse?

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 17:44 (twenty years ago)

2 months, probably.

Markleby, you had better start thinking about tickets now. And possibly even buying them.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 17:53 (twenty years ago)

whats the over under on pedro's arm falling off?

Big Baby Bingo (Chris V), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 18:03 (twenty years ago)

Anybody rockin' one of these yet?

briania (briania), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 20:58 (twenty years ago)

I'd actually be surprised if there are many (if any) BoSox tickets left, especially now that they done did that World Series thing right.

Hence the haste with which Markelby ought to apply himself to the situation.

My father bought two of the New Era Nationals caps and tried to give me one. New Era caps look awful when you actually wear them, though - the bill doesn't curve well, the crown is way too high and they're hot.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 21:26 (twenty years ago)

Hey Sox fans (Tracer, BBB, Eisbar) (tee hee) - are you guys gonna root for Pedro, or are you going to hope he goes up in cortisone-fed flames? Or are you gonna root for Lowe?

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 21:29 (twenty years ago)

As a Red Sox fan in New York, I'm rootin' for Pedro (and the rest of the New Mets), at least until he has to pitch against Boston.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 21:37 (twenty years ago)

i love pedro for what he accomplished in the sox uniform. beyond that i think he is a greedy son of a bitch and a fucking diva. as far as im concerned he can go fuck himself.

Big Baby Bingo (Chris V), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 23:55 (twenty years ago)

I dunno, there was a story in the NYT the other week about how Pedro has built schools and churches and houses in his hometown, paved streets, etc. etc. They love him there. He's got an ego like camels have humps, but I don't think he's a bad guy.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Thursday, 17 February 2005 02:37 (twenty years ago)

I hate that 'greedy son of a bitch' stuff. No player owes an ounce of loyalty to their club (to their team during the season, sure). If the Red Sox didn't want to match the money, that's their deal not Pedro's. Maybe he'll be great in New York, maybe not - but he owes it to himself and his family to make as much as he can while he can as a major league player.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Thursday, 17 February 2005 03:39 (twenty years ago)

Not to mention the Red Sox have this famous history of giving up on players deemed "past their prime" and who have gone on to much greater things.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 17 February 2005 03:43 (twenty years ago)

I'm looking forward to the next phenom: The next Fred Lynn, Jim Rice, Mark Fidrych, Mark McGwire, Dwight Gooden.

Who will be the first to 10 HRs / 30 RBI / 6 wins sort of thing.

This'll get me going early-on.

jim wentworth (wench), Thursday, 17 February 2005 03:58 (twenty years ago)

Well, yeah, Pedro IS a fucking diva - name me a #1 starter that isn't, and I'll name you a liar liar. He's also a fantastic philanthropist (as GM mentioned), and a gas in the dugout (cf. those off-days where Nomar would duct-tape Pedro to the pole, or just Pedro going solo dancing and hollering like a kid), not to mention a hell of a pitcher (which goes w/out saying, but I like being NINJA OF THE OBVIOUS). He has every right to ask for what he asked for, just as the Red Sox had every right to sit or spin on it - the market bears what it will bear, and if a player can get $25M/yr from a team that would just as soon cut his ass lose after an injury or and off year some other mishap, more power to him. The onus & blame for that shit falls on the team signing the checks, not the guy cashing the checks. (As for Pedro leaving the Sox - given what he wanted, I'm glad the Sox didn't resign him, as the money they would've spent on Pedro this year paid for Clement and Wells and maybe even Wade Miller, too, and as much as I hope for his success, that shoulder gives me nightsweats.)

So, yeah, go Pedro. And D-Lowe, too - I don't know what the Dodgers were smoking w/ that $9M/yr contract, but I really hope they get bang for their buck.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 17 February 2005 04:16 (twenty years ago)

That $9M contract shows you how much that Game 7 was worth. Every pitch in that game is another couple hundred thousand in the bank.
