Dream sequence

Why are dream sequences in movies and TV shows so out of synch with the reality of how dreams really are? Or is it just me? Am I the only one who doesn't have dreams involving slow motion, fog, people talking backwards, and slightly obscured yet pertinent messages about the events of my life at the time? Most of my dreams are confusing, ridiculous, and mundane. Please tell me I am not alone.

Are there any realistic dream sequences in film or television that I should be aware of?

Most of my dreams involve being back in high school or college and being around people I was friends with back then.

Some of the dream sequences in various Buffy episodes creeped me the hell out with OTMness.

The dream sequences in Angels in America seem right on, or at least to me.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind seemed to capture dream state pretty well.
Dreamscape, less so.

That's my dream. That's my nightmare.

a lot of the dreamyness of dreams, for me at least, lies in the actual feeling of dreaming - being partially aware that you're dreaming, the amount of control you have, etc, rather than the actual 'look' of the thing. seems to me that's why it's so hard to capture accurately on film. the dream sequence in the Golden Child sticks in my mind as a fairly decent one.

Yeah, except it's really about memory isn't it?

I blame Dali.

There is a dream sequence in one of the Beatles films which was pretty accurate for my sorts of dreams. I think it might have been Magical Mystery Tour. They were climbing over the tops of buildings on some kind of quest and this man sat down to eat and they kept giving him more and more food and he kept saying "thank you, I've had enough now..." but the food wouldn't stop coming.

Was that not john lennon, spaghetti bolognaise and a rather large woman?

kate/papa november (papa november), Thursday, 17 February 2005 13:24 (twenty years ago)

Yes! That's pretty much it. Though I thought the tour conductor was somehow involved. But that is exactly what my dreams are like.

Kate Kept Me Alive! (kate), Thursday, 17 February 2005 13:26 (twenty years ago)

That's pretty fucked up. The tour conductor probably was involved, but on the other side of the table was def. the fat woman :)

...I have horrible morbid dreams about people i know being murdered in horrible ways. Scary!

The other night I dreamed that my wife's sister was being attacked by wolves, I tried to shoot one of them but missed and hit her. She turned round to scream at me with her mouth wide open but no sound was coming out and I could see right through her head as I'd blown the back of it off.

I'm sure this means something. Probably that my head is fucked.

No, my dreams are ALWAYS really odd and out of it. Strangely, they always have really complicated plots and incidental music as well. Last night's plot involved vote rigging in an Oliver!-style Victorian London, only a lot more violent and with a lot more sex. Very odd.

Recently I've had a couple of cinematic dreams, though neither one was like a cinema dream sequence. In the first all sorts of comical and romantic things happened, and at some point near the end of the dream I realized what was happening to me wasn't "real", but instead I was an actor in a Hollywood romantic comedy. This made me feel quite weird, especially since I'd fallen in love with this girl, who turned out to be merely my co-star. In the second dream I was a black female fugitive in the US Deep South. Most of the dream I was running away from the cops, but then they caught me and threw me into jail. I was escorted into the jail shower, and while taking the shower I started to masturbate, and I remember thinking, "Well, at least I can masturbate.". That was where the dream ended.
