I presume a lot of people fall for these.

Definitely, I live in constant fear of them whenever I'm within three or four feet of a computer.

i mean... who actually enters their info into these things without knowing what prompted them? does not seem like the act of a rational person... no offense to anyone who's done it.

I admit, before these types of emails/spam/scams started proliferating and becoming known as scams, a while back, I was stupid and did one claiming to be from eBay (I didn't check the actual URL reference at the bottom of the browser window, and just believed the legitimately constructed URL link in the e-mail.)

I immediately caught my mistake, cancelled my debit card, and got credit reports from all three bureaus. I've since learned to keep track of my credit often. And it can be done automatically... as long as you have the three phone numbers to call to generate the credit reports. It's paranoid, but I figure it taught me a lesson, and -- weirdly enough -- was all for the better, eventually.

I've gotten scam spam in the last week from "PayPal," my bank and my credit card. Pretty convincing, too -- the one purporting to be my bank stole the whole Web site design and everything. Of course, they couldn't quite get around the problem of, "Why does my bank need me to tell them my bank card number?"

Yeah, I admit that I fell for one a few months ago, since it was purportedly from my own bank, which isn't even a hugely common bank around here. But immediately after I entered my online banking password, I realized that it might have been a phishing attack, and so I called the customer-service line to report it, and I changed my password immediately, and I ended up fine.

Amusingly, the only difference between my bank's real homepage and the fake one I was directed to was that the fake one didn't have the warning in the sidebar about phishing.

Yeah, those PayPal e-mails are scary, as they look legit, and the page they link to looks legit. Thankfully, the URL is just some IP address, so I caught on before I did something really stupid - also, the dopes sent the e-mails to the wrong address.

Of course, I once d/led Bonzi Buddy back when I didn't know a damn thing, so there's always a chance I could get all stupid again.

I fell for that, once. Once.

It was a combination of the realistic Earthlink page and the fact that I had just changed my account to a different credit card number. I went to the page, filled out the information, and when I hit "Send", it gave me a 404. I don't know if they ever got my stuff or not, but I cancelled that (new) card that night and have never seen hide nor hair of any wrongdoing since.

and the fact that I had just changed my account to a different credit card number.

Oh yeah, that was my situtation, too! I'd just gotten a new debit card, so it seemed plausible that I'd need to "update my account" somehow.

I almost fell for it once a few years ago when it started. Now, I enter in the ID & password: "Nice Try"/ "Fucking Cunt"
