Barbara Kopple, director of the landmark labor doc Harlan County, USA, is now apparently turning out VH1 celebrity-marriage lifestyle pieces. Is this cause for heartbreak and handwringing, or for simple admiration of a well-sustained career?

One of our favorite documentarians sure has been busy in the love zone!  Academy Award-winning director Barbara Kopple of Nonfiction Spots has completed three special new episodes of the VH1 series "I Married..." to air in celebration of Valentine's Day.  The series focuses on celebrities and the brave souls who marry them.  Two of the installments, I Married Sebastian Bach and I Married Uncle Kracker premiere February 11.  The third episode, I Married Sammy Hagar, is getting a particularly strong push from the network, which is airing a sneak preview the morning of February 14, with the premiere slated for that night.  Additional episodes directed by Kopple include those featuring MC Hammer (Stanley) & Stephanie Burrell, Darius & Beth Rucker, Omarosa Manigault-Stallworth & Aaron Stallworth, and Carnie Wilson & Rob Bonfiglio. Kopple's recent spot credits include campaigns for Sprint and Target.

A documentary filmmaker who is actually making a living making documentary films is a cause to be celebrated in any case. Who cares if its making maybe-sort-of-trashy stuff for VH1? Sometimes I maybe-sort-of-want to watch it.
