ESPN is showing tonight's Virginia / North Carolina game with 1981 graphics

They've got the Block 18 pt Helveticesque graphics, a big stupid scoreclock in the corner, and the announcers are wearing Howard Cosell headphones. I can't tell if it's really cool or really gay.

They just went to a commercial, with "Urgent" playing in the background and the replays all vectored. If they do "Sportscenter" like this tonight, maybe I'll be impressed.

dude, they had like a whole throwback SportsCenter month last year! or maybe it was in 2003, I forget. But yeah, they had Berman hosting, and they brought back older people like Craig Kilborn and Bob Ley to host. They wore sport jackets with the big goofy ESPN logo patch and so on.

I think that was for their 25 anniversary. They periodically do stuff like they are doing tonight at least once or twice a season; I think this is more about promoting ESPN Classic. Or, you know, just giving people another hook in (especially in case Virginia turns out to be a patsy.)

yeah this is an espn classic thing, espn has the broadcast rights to tons of games they don't show so they're gonna show some on espn classic but make it retro as keeping with the channel. i have weirdly mixed feelings about this.
