Wow, lamer than I even imagined.

Leon the Fatboy (Ex Leon), Thursday, 17 February 2005 15:58 (twenty years ago)

"And secondly," he said, "these are cartoons. Lighten up! They're fun and the existence of one doesn't preclude the existence of another."

He came up with these kind of justifications at his frat retreat for why yanking his crank over Playboy centerfolds didn't deny the existence of non-airbrushed women, I guess.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 17 February 2005 15:58 (twenty years ago)

b-b-but our market analysts said these would resonate with the target age group!

The Argunaut (sexyDancer), Thursday, 17 February 2005 15:59 (twenty years ago)

...morons?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 17 February 2005 15:59 (twenty years ago)

maroons.

Huk-L, Thursday, 17 February 2005 16:00 (twenty years ago)

Macaroons?

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 17 February 2005 16:00 (twenty years ago)

It is to laugh.

Huk-L, Thursday, 17 February 2005 16:01 (twenty years ago)

It's a totally outrageous paradigm!

Richard C (avoid80), Thursday, 17 February 2005 16:03 (twenty years ago)

Maroon 5 should be balmed for this.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 17 February 2005 16:03 (twenty years ago)

balmed, haha

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 17 February 2005 16:03 (twenty years ago)

"And secondly," he said, "these are cartoons. Lighten up! They're fun and the existence of one doesn't preclude the existence of another."

I think he's actually right. Take Batman for example: he has had all sorts of variable forms, from the comical to the very dark. What's the problem with that? Only if they'd permanently change the characters and delete the old toons would this be a concern.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 17 February 2005 16:03 (twenty years ago)

I actually have no problem with this, other than the lameness of it.

Huk-L, Thursday, 17 February 2005 16:07 (twenty years ago)

Just because one can do something, Tuomas, does that mean that one should do something?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 17 February 2005 16:10 (twenty years ago)

Huk-L, Thursday, 17 February 2005 16:12 (twenty years ago)

Bugs's earlier transformations were much, much better.

http://www.animationartwork.com/images/sku2519.jpg

Now that's a Bugs for the ages.

Fish fingers all in a line (kenan), Thursday, 17 February 2005 16:16 (twenty years ago)

HOTTT.

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 17 February 2005 16:18 (twenty years ago)

I don't think batman ever got "comical" comical tho. Bugs, otoh, went from comical and fluffy to downright sinister looking here.

xpost to Tuomas

dysøn (dyson), Thursday, 17 February 2005 16:20 (twenty years ago)

Lighten up! They're fun and the existence of one doesn't preclude the existence of another."

justifications... for why yanking his crank over Playboy centerfolds didn't deny the existence of non-airbrushed women

I have no problem with either of these, apart from the assertion that Loonatics will be fun.

Meep Meep, Thursday, 17 February 2005 16:23 (twenty years ago)

Only if they'd permanently change the characters and delete the old toons would this be a concern.

And they're not even temporarily changing the characters. These are new characters related to the existing ones, like the Tiny Toons. I know it's pointless to complain about poor writing in the New York Post, but that's no more a "new version" of Bugs Bunny than I'm a new version of my grandfather.

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 17 February 2005 16:24 (twenty years ago)

When the Revolution comes, I want to be the guy in charge of torturing capitalist bosses who use words like "hip", "cool", and "lighten up!".

Colin Meeder (Mert), Thursday, 17 February 2005 16:27 (twenty years ago)

Dyson:

http://www.adamwest.com/_images/BatmanWithBomb_thumb.jpg

Also, just discussing this with the intern, and I pointed out that Bugs was an early proponent of same sex (different species, though) marriage. As he has tied the knot with both Elmer Fudd and Yosemite Sam on separate occassions. So maybe gay marriage does lead to polygamy!

Huk-L, Thursday, 17 February 2005 16:27 (twenty years ago)

C'mon, Tep, we know your grandfather left messages on bulletin boards in hallways talking about recipes OH DO NOT LIE.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 17 February 2005 16:28 (twenty years ago)

I don't think batman ever got "comical" comical tho.

Have you never SEEN the Adam West Batman???

Just because one can do something, Tuomas, does that mean that one should do something?

In this case? Absolutely.

The new Bugs looks, um, challenged, but you know, it's their property and they aren't erasing the old cartoons (including the amazingly racist ones from back in the day; REMEMBER THOSE?) so let's not react like they're kicking our grandmothers in the teeth.

(However, I would like to challenge Colin for that torture job.)

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 17 February 2005 16:28 (twenty years ago)

I mean, if they wanted to go this route they could have done better than making a rejected-Pokemon version of Bugs Bunny but it's not the end of the world.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 17 February 2005 16:29 (twenty years ago)

Now I'm imagining Bugs going around saying "PIKA?!?!"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 17 February 2005 16:30 (twenty years ago)

Rejected nothing, I'd totally choose that guy to whale on Pikachu.

xpost!

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 17 February 2005 16:30 (twenty years ago)

Okay.. but believe it or not... Adam West was real people!

dysøn (dyson), Thursday, 17 February 2005 16:30 (twenty years ago)

Actually, wait, hold on Dan, so you're saying that 'absolutely' this should have done?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 17 February 2005 16:31 (twenty years ago)

I'm saying that if they believe in the idea, they should try it out. My only judgement right now is that the new Bugs is giving me a ferocious case of the giggles and I would try to watch the new cartoon so that I could laugh at it and possibly be surprised by nu-Bugs eviscerating cute Warner Brothers cartoon kiddies.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 17 February 2005 16:33 (twenty years ago)

Soylent Green was real people.

Huk-L, Thursday, 17 February 2005 16:34 (twenty years ago)

Why not just create entirely new characters, though?

Huk-L, Thursday, 17 February 2005 16:34 (twenty years ago)

Because no one would give two shits.

dysøn (dyson), Thursday, 17 February 2005 16:36 (twenty years ago)

People gave many shits about Pokemon, Powerpuff Girls, and Spongebob.

Huk-L, Thursday, 17 February 2005 16:37 (twenty years ago)

Neo-Bugs honestly doesn't look that bad -- and doesn't stand out much -- relative to the other cartoons aimed at kids these days. Yeah, he's not "our Bugs Bunny," blah blah blah, but we didn't have a Bugs Bunny. We had reruns of decades-old theatrical filler. I'm not very bothered by kids who watch other things that don't appeal to me watching something else that doesn't appeal to me that happens to share a brand name with something I grew up with. The novelty of that's kind of lost its shine.

(Huck, why not make new characters instead of the Tiny Toons, Teen Titans, etc? Because people like it when they don't.)

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 17 February 2005 16:38 (twenty years ago)

Wait, forget that -- you're a Hal Jordan fan! Get the hell out of the "make new characters" camp!

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 17 February 2005 16:40 (twenty years ago)

(xpost) It is easier to market something with brand-name recognition than it is to create a brand name.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 17 February 2005 16:40 (twenty years ago)

Because they know they could never even come close to anything nearly as awesome as Sponge Bob! It's much easier for a room full of brian dead marketers to work with something that's already out there.

xpost

dysøn (dyson), Thursday, 17 February 2005 16:41 (twenty years ago)

New bugs looks a whole lot chea..cough..easier to animate.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Thursday, 17 February 2005 16:41 (twenty years ago)

Dan just phrased it much better. I am obsolete.

dysøn (dyson), Thursday, 17 February 2005 16:42 (twenty years ago)

But with Tiny Toons, Teen Titans, and Kyle Rayner, at least they're trying to market to an audience who's at least dimly aware of the roots of the concepts. With Lunatix, it seems as though they're aiming at an audience under, say, 10, for whom Bugs Bunny holds as much meaning as Michael Jordan.

Huk-L, Thursday, 17 February 2005 16:44 (twenty years ago)

Of course they are -- just like they did with Hal Jordan. Why call him Green Lantern, when everything about him except his powers was different? Because it didn't matter. There were no back issue shops; there were no reprints; there were no trade paperbacks. No one cared about Alan Scott except the people who didn't buy comics anymore -- and they still reused the name (which is more than what WB's doing with Loonatics), because there was no reason not to and every reason to build on a successful franchise.

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 17 February 2005 16:47 (twenty years ago)

at an audience under, say, 10, for whom Bugs Bunny holds as much meaning as Michael Jordan.

My kids are 5 and 3 and are fully aware of Bugs and the rest of the Looney Tunes.

Meep Meep, Thursday, 17 February 2005 16:49 (twenty years ago)

Why have multiple actors play Gordon on Sesame Street, instead of creating a new character? Why keep James Bond going agelessly while everything around him changes? Because there's nothing inherently wrong with doing so, if everything else you're doing works. If Loonatics sucks, it won't be because of a tangential Looney Toons connection; if it's successful, that connection gives them more to play with.

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 17 February 2005 16:50 (twenty years ago)

"Fully aware"

Oh dear, sounds like I've been training them with Looney Toon flash cards. What I meant to say was "they watch old cartoons as well as new ones".

Meep Meep, Thursday, 17 February 2005 16:52 (twenty years ago)

With Lunatix, it seems as though they're aiming at an audience under, say, 10, for whom Bugs Bunny holds as much meaning as Michael Jordan.

How should I be reading this sentence so that it supports your point rather than undermines it?

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 17 February 2005 16:54 (twenty years ago)

http://www.nypost.com/photos/news02172005003.jpg

this is going to give cartoon characters serious body image issues.

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 17 February 2005 16:56 (twenty years ago)

This all brings up:
http://newsarama.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=27768

Which sort of warns that Hollywood is discovering that they can create their own superheroes, and may no longer have need of such B-list (or C-list even) properties and attendant licensing fees like Blade or Constantine.

But, yeah, it's always easier to adapt existing ideas than to start from scratch, and as I said earlier, I have no problem with this.

Huk-L, Thursday, 17 February 2005 16:56 (twenty years ago)

Bugs: "Is my body too bootylicious for ya, doc? Well, thanks to this innovative collaboration between Body Glove and Slim Fast..."

It's a large can, though! But yeah. I agree. I like the idea of a resealable can better than a plastic bottle, but Jolt isn't a sippin' cola.

When I was a kid, we used to heat Jolt up and use it as the "water" for instant coffee. It was like having a drug lab.

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 17 February 2005 18:22 (twenty years ago)

I'm most upset at the prospect that there will be no anvils involved.

I actually work with Warner Bros. brand managers (who can be sticklers) and just sent them something featuring the new Bugs standing on top of a bleeding old Bugs and said something like: "I hope this doesn't violate any of your Looney Tunes brand standards!"

All the cartoons on WB are really squarey. All the characters have a bad case of pointy jaw.

Can't wait til they bring back the Marx Bros as cyborgs.

I SO prefer the Adam West Batman to any other incarnation. "Ooooh, let's explore the SERIOUS side of Batman/Supey/Spidey" is for 14-year-old loners.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 17 February 2005 21:46 (twenty years ago)

Can't wait til they bring back the Marx Bros as cyborgs.

Didn't the original Scooby Doo cartoons occasionally feature an animated Abbott and Costello, or other icons from the early sound film era?

j.lu (j.lu), Thursday, 17 February 2005 21:52 (twenty years ago)

Those weren't the originals, that was one of the late-70s/early 80s incarnations of the show (featuring also Jerry Reed, Cass Elliot, Sean Cassidy, The Harlem Globetrotters, and Dick Van Dyke).

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 17 February 2005 22:53 (twenty years ago)

Lighty Louse!
Perhaps that's who he is holding in his arms as he wails in grief.

Didn't the original Scooby Doo cartoons occasionally feature an animated Abbott and Costello
Isn't this a time honored cartoon tradition? I seem to recall seeing many five-o'clock-shadowed Peter Lorre and Edward G. Robinson looking characters in the old Looney Tunes- were they Warners stars?

Ken L (Ken L), Thursday, 17 February 2005 23:37 (twenty years ago)

as sad as i was when chuck jones died, i'm really glad he didn't live to see this.

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Friday, 18 February 2005 09:32 (twenty years ago)

"Can't wait til they bring back the Marx Bros as cyborgs."

Oh, thanks. You've just reminded me of that cartoon where they sent Sherlock Holmes...INTO THE FUTURE! With a robot Watson!

The things is, before Batman was reimagined by Timm, Dini & Co, there hadn't exactly been a definitive animated version, so it's wasn't like they were going to be pissing on years of classic cartoons like "Lunatix" has the potential to. Then again, we've already lived through Space Jam, so I suppose it couldn't get any worse.

The Poochy thing is right, though. It's Bugs Bunny TO THE X-TREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEM! I can't wait till we get Porky as a skateboarding rasta who's totally pro-active and in-your-face.
