you want me to make the tapas?

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 18 February 2005 06:57 (twenty years ago)

and spin records:

Fat Anarchy on Airtube (ex machina), Friday, 18 February 2005 07:06 (twenty years ago)

yes

Alienus Quam Reproba (blueski), Friday, 18 February 2005 10:07 (twenty years ago)

if I was interested, would I have to actually play the RPG or could I just be a spectator?

Allyzay Dallas Multi-Pass (allyzay), Friday, 18 February 2005 15:40 (twenty years ago)

what ally said

Je4nne ƒury (Jeanne Fury), Friday, 18 February 2005 15:41 (twenty years ago)

as long as I don't have to be DM, sure.

57 7th (calstars), Friday, 18 February 2005 15:45 (twenty years ago)

fuck no, you have to play.

Fat Anarchy on Airtube (ex machina), Friday, 18 February 2005 15:46 (twenty years ago)

i would do this! i am going to name my character conor oberst. He will be a bard with a magical lyre.

bnw (bnw), Friday, 18 February 2005 15:49 (twenty years ago)

All must play the game. Ally in particular has to play so she can bond with her elf-obsessed younger sister.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 18 February 2005 15:50 (twenty years ago)

if I play, can I be the DM, whatever that is? It sounds exciting.

Allyzay Dallas Multi-Pass (allyzay), Friday, 18 February 2005 15:55 (twenty years ago)

Oh hell yeah! (Being the DM means you can encourage all the characters to walk into a room where they are instantly destroyed by monsters.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 18 February 2005 15:58 (twenty years ago)

It's like you're God, but without all that peace and mercy stuff.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 18 February 2005 15:58 (twenty years ago)

DUNGEON MASTER, MASTER OF DUNGEONS

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 18 February 2005 15:58 (twenty years ago)

I'll be the uncooperative lesbian character.

Je4nne ƒury (Jeanne Fury), Friday, 18 February 2005 15:59 (twenty years ago)

Me too!

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 18 February 2005 16:00 (twenty years ago)

We need the DRAFGONMASTER on this thread.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 18 February 2005 16:00 (twenty years ago)

Sweet. Dan and me are a couple.

Je4nne ƒury (Jeanne Fury), Friday, 18 February 2005 16:01 (twenty years ago)

Dungeons and Dragons 2: The SAUCY Years

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 18 February 2005 16:01 (twenty years ago)

Whoever is DM should be comfortable using large sheets of graph paper.

57 7th (calstars), Friday, 18 February 2005 16:04 (twenty years ago)

Whoever is DM should be comfortable using large sheets of graph paper.

... with SEXY RESULTS!

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 18 February 2005 16:05 (twenty years ago)

Are there people who are uncomfortable with graph paper? I mean what would we be doing with the graph paper?

Allyzay Dallas Multi-Pass (allyzay), Friday, 18 February 2005 16:07 (twenty years ago)

Dan's character:

http://www.jabootu.com/images/d&dbluelips.JPG

...oh wait.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 18 February 2005 16:08 (twenty years ago)

Graph paper is used to make EXTREMELY DETAILED MAPS so you know where the pits of poison spikes are and things like that.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 18 February 2005 16:08 (twenty years ago)

Ned, he wasn't a lesbian ranger named Dolomite!

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 18 February 2005 16:09 (twenty years ago)

A challenge for the ages -- which version of Thora Birch does the geek contigent prefer?

http://us.ent4.yimg.com/movies.yahoo.com/images/hv/photo/movie_pix/mgm/ghost_world/_group_photos/scarlett_johansson10.jpg

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 18 February 2005 16:11 (twenty years ago)

Detailed maps? Graph paper? Wait, you mean we don't just have to show up and be our fabulous selves? This blows. /uncooperative lesbian character

Je4nne ƒury (Jeanne Fury), Friday, 18 February 2005 16:12 (twenty years ago)

Oh, and all the bad guys look like Jeremy Irons:

http://www.jabootu.com/images/d&dProfion.JPG

Jeanne, you get someone ELSE to draw the maps.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 18 February 2005 16:13 (twenty years ago)

Ha! I thought that said "We don't just show up and be our fabulous elves?" Which was really funny.

Remy (constitution bonus, roll 2d4) (x Jeremy), Friday, 18 February 2005 16:14 (twenty years ago)

Thora Birch was ridiculously cute in "Dungeons & Dragons". I wanted to protect her from the evils of the world like the narrator of "A Question Of Time".

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 18 February 2005 16:14 (twenty years ago)

dude wtf I am not drawing a map I don't want to be the DM anymore.

Allyzay Dallas Multi-Pass (allyzay), Friday, 18 February 2005 16:15 (twenty years ago)

IT's okay we can use the tapas for everything

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 18 February 2005 16:16 (twenty years ago)

Remy you must hone your psionic powers.

Ally you don't have to draw a map -- there are tons of premade ones. Just take one of those and have everything in it be poisonous or evil.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 18 February 2005 16:16 (twenty years ago)

premade map!!! wtf that's just laziness, why don't I buy an eBay everquest character while I"m at it.

Allyzay Dallas Multi-Pass (allyzay), Friday, 18 February 2005 16:17 (twenty years ago)

Whoever brings food gets +2 charisma.

57 7th (calstars), Friday, 18 February 2005 16:18 (twenty years ago)

There is also the time-honored 'make it up as you go along' approach, Ally.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 18 February 2005 16:18 (twenty years ago)

Which as you're essentially playing God makes perfect sense.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 18 February 2005 16:18 (twenty years ago)

I will only play if there is a tapas map.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 18 February 2005 16:18 (twenty years ago)

You can be rewarded with tapas instead of gold + exp.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 18 February 2005 16:18 (twenty years ago)

"You are walking towards the fresh rabbit dish when suddenly a pool of sangria appears."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 18 February 2005 16:19 (twenty years ago)

Girls get +7 charisma automatically. COME ON LADIES, YOU KNOW THAT SOUNDS APPEALING!!

Allyzay Dallas Multi-Pass (allyzay), Friday, 18 February 2005 16:19 (twenty years ago)

OH NO I HAVE FAILED MY SAVING THROUGH VS OLIVE OIL

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 18 February 2005 16:20 (twenty years ago)

I HAVE ALSO FAILED MY SAVING THROW VS SPELLING

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 18 February 2005 16:20 (twenty years ago)

"Quick! Cast a spell with the manchego!"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 18 February 2005 16:20 (twenty years ago)

Activate the amulet of testicular bravery.

57 7th (calstars), Friday, 18 February 2005 16:21 (twenty years ago)

"A shambling mound of paella blocks your path."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 18 February 2005 16:21 (twenty years ago)

My armor has a +6 bonus vs flan.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 18 February 2005 16:21 (twenty years ago)

Ned, paella really doesn't count as "tapas" per se, it's more "entree"

Allyzay Dallas Multi-Pass (allyzay), Friday, 18 February 2005 16:22 (twenty years ago)

Graph paper
Fun fact: Gravity's Rainbow was allegedly written entirely on graph paper- the green engineer's kind.

Ken L (Ken L), Friday, 18 February 2005 16:23 (twenty years ago)

"Fun"

Allyzay Dallas Multi-Pass (allyzay), Friday, 18 February 2005 16:23 (twenty years ago)

I think "Robots Standing In The Tapas" is going to be the title of my novel, is that cool JF?

TOMBOT, Friday, 18 February 2005 17:19 (twenty years ago)

Absolutely. It's the very least I can do for humanity.

Je4nne ƒury (Jeanne Fury), Friday, 18 February 2005 17:21 (twenty years ago)

57 7th (calstars), Friday, 18 February 2005 17:37 (twenty years ago)

Go to Siberia. Go directly to Siberia. Do not tapas Go. Do not collect 200 chorizos.

Ken L (Ken L), Friday, 18 February 2005 17:56 (twenty years ago)

TAPASGRAPHICAL

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 18 February 2005 19:04 (twenty years ago)

Oh boy, Siberia as a role-playing bar. TimeOut NY gonna be all over that shit!

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 18 February 2005 19:18 (twenty years ago)

I always wondered what an intersteller RPG game would be like if it took general (that's the right one i think) relativity into account....

Fat Anarchy on Airtube (ex machina), Friday, 18 February 2005 19:46 (twenty years ago)

I would play, but I only know Twilight: 2000 and Traveller: 2300 = I am a weirdo. Can we also have a Star Fleet Battles corner?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 18 February 2005 19:49 (twenty years ago)

I AM TAKING A TRIP TO PLANET PARIS HILTON TO MINE BOTOX CRYSTALLOIDS

OH SHIT THAT MEANS WE HAVE TO AGE ALL THE OTHER CHARACTERS 37 SPACE YEARS

WAIT NOT IF I FOLD THE MAP LIKE THIS

TOMBOT, Friday, 18 February 2005 19:54 (twenty years ago)

roffle.

Fat Anarchy on Airtube (ex machina), Friday, 18 February 2005 19:56 (twenty years ago)

heh heh

57 7th (calstars), Friday, 18 February 2005 19:57 (twenty years ago)

I think I just hurt myself by trying to stifle a screamy giggle.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 18 February 2005 19:57 (twenty years ago)

Beautiful. Tombot = genius, AGAIN.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 18 February 2005 20:03 (twenty years ago)

I believe you need a 10 on your to-hit roll, Tombot. Unless the vehicle was at 'running' speed, then you need an 11. Good luck, sucka.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Friday, 18 February 2005 20:06 (twenty years ago)

have i mentioned how much i wanna play warhammer?!!?!? do people use model train scenery? is it HO scale? xpost

Fat Anarchy on Airtube (ex machina), Friday, 18 February 2005 20:11 (twenty years ago)

Warhammer's kind of terrible and ridiculously expensive to play.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Friday, 18 February 2005 20:14 (twenty years ago)

I like 1/285th scale modern micro-armor battles.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 18 February 2005 20:50 (twenty years ago)

I read that as "I like 1/285th scale modern microtone battles"

Ken L (Ken L), Friday, 18 February 2005 21:00 (twenty years ago)

god you guys are nerds.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 18 February 2005 21:01 (twenty years ago)

If you've got the tapas, we've got the mapas.

Ken L (Ken L), Friday, 18 February 2005 21:03 (twenty years ago)

i mean, nerds are all right with me.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 18 February 2005 21:12 (twenty years ago)

Any NYers ever been to that microscale strategy store on 8th off of Bway?

57 7th (calstars), Friday, 18 February 2005 21:24 (twenty years ago)

fifteen years pass...

Who wants to play Troika! with me? A science-fantasy world set in a decadent dying-earth milieu. Also pretty light-hearted.
BYOB. No cat haters.

ian, Saturday, 25 July 2020 18:15 (five years ago)

Don’t know if I am interested in playing that game but definitely not a cat hater.

Time Will Show Leo Weiser (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 25 July 2020 19:21 (five years ago)

It looks interesting but I’m guessing you’re not hosting this on zoom.

sound of scampo talk to me (El Tomboto), Sunday, 26 July 2020 00:38 (five years ago)

I live in Nassau County and (under non-quarantine circumstances) would travel to Brooklyn/Queens for this. Tell me more.

Tōne Locatelli Romano (PBKR), Sunday, 26 July 2020 12:22 (five years ago)

The game is a few years old - it only uses 6-sided die; has a strange initiative system; has an infinitely expandable number of skills and spells and abilities; really bizarre 'backgrounds' which are sort of the character classes - fellow of the sublime society of beef steaks, vengeful child, a space-faring giant, monkeymonger, rhino man... as well as more standard stuff like.. exotic warrior, necromancer, thaumaturge, questing knight, etc. It's a science-fantasy setting so you get laser pistols AND swords - cyborgs AND magic. There's space-travel via ship and by magical portal (as in the Book of The New Sun novels by Gene Wolfe) -- it's very open ended.

Most mechanics involve rolling 2 six-sided dice and adding your skill level. There are only three stats -- skill, luck, and stamina (hp)

The adventure that comes with the book is short and involves the PCs being invited to the Feast of The Chiliarch, so they have to make it to the top floor of the hotel to where the party is.

I could in theory do such a thing on zoom, but for RPGs I use roll20 which has all the character sheets available and stuff. It has a video option but I usually just do voice. Anyone interested lmk and I'll post or message you a link.

ian, Sunday, 26 July 2020 17:34 (five years ago)

i dunno if that makes it sound complicated but it's actually a very rules-light game.

ian, Sunday, 26 July 2020 17:50 (five years ago)

this troika game looks dope and i just bought it

thanks for the tip!

the late great, Sunday, 26 July 2020 17:59 (five years ago)

yo it rules; it's not a huge book but it's really rad. lots of BotNS easter eggs. you can play a zoanthrope.

ian, Sunday, 26 July 2020 18:05 (five years ago)

"No starting possessions; you have thrown off the shackles of civilization. You are probably nude."

ian, Sunday, 26 July 2020 18:05 (five years ago)

i saw that! it really does look like a more light-hearted version of BotNS, which is why i bought it ... i've also dreamed of doing a moorcock-ian "dancers at the end of time" type game for awhile and this looks like it has some
of that flavor

i also have a copy of the pelgrane "dying earth" rpg but that is very very specifcally geared toward a vance-ian world and style of goofiness

the late great, Sunday, 26 July 2020 18:09 (five years ago)

lmao "moorcock-ian"

the late great, Sunday, 26 July 2020 18:10 (five years ago)

I think you'll like this a lot!

ian, Sunday, 26 July 2020 18:13 (five years ago)

the other recent-ish indie RPG i really want to play is called Blades In The Dark and it's set in a post-apocalyptic victorian-era-kinda-steampunk city. You play a game of thieves and have a crew and you pull heists and murders and kidnappings and smuggling or whatever other criminal enterprise.

ian, Sunday, 26 July 2020 18:16 (five years ago)

ah yeah i have the sci fi version of that game ("scum and villainy") which i used as a ruleset for a star frontiers campaign of all things (we played through most of the alpha dawn modules before taking a break)

it's a good ruleset with a rad task resolution system, though you need to be strict abt killing off PCs who powergame because it's an easy system to abuse and you can quickly max out PC stats

the late great, Sunday, 26 July 2020 18:20 (five years ago)

https://www.evilhat.com/home/scum-and-villainy/

the late great, Sunday, 26 July 2020 18:21 (five years ago)

It'll probably be a while until I can get anyone to play with me, so I'm not too worried about it at the moment. I'm not sure the guys I pay retro-D&D with have given the rules more than a cursory glance

ian, Sunday, 26 July 2020 20:08 (five years ago)

Sounds interesting, could give it a shot

calstars, Sunday, 26 July 2020 20:42 (five years ago)

ian, I am in for Troika; it is relevant to my interests. From looking at the descriptions, it reminds me of a very druggy Gamma World. I might need to buy some more edibles (jk). I am ordering the book today.

I have never played an rpg via zoom, let alone just audio. Video would be ideal, but I would play with whatever you are comfortable with.

Maybe not for the first session, but would offer up my back deck as an option that could accommodate 5-7 people socially distanced. We have a train line if NYC people don't have a car.

NB, I haven't truly played an RPG in 19 years, though in the 19 years before that I played enough for 2 people.

Tōne Locatelli Romano (PBKR), Sunday, 26 July 2020 21:50 (five years ago)

Is this the players manual?

https://img.fireden.net/tg/image/1535/95/1535953497815.pdf

calstars, Sunday, 26 July 2020 22:13 (five years ago)

Calstars, that looks like an earlier iteration of the full rulebook. there is just one fairly small hardcover book. you may still be able to get the pdf free or very cheap.. recently if you made a donation in any amount to a group involved with the Black Lives Matter movement or any other Black liberation group you could get a free .pdf.

ian, Sunday, 26 July 2020 23:53 (five years ago)

I got my physical rulebook for Troika. It is a cute little thing.

Mom jokes are his way of showing affection (to your mom) (PBKR), Friday, 7 August 2020 17:27 (five years ago)

one month passes...

ian, still thinking of running this? I want to play!

James Gandolfini the Grey (PBKR), Friday, 18 September 2020 19:18 (five years ago)

two months pass...

So I got tired of waiting for ian (no offense) and started running Troika via discord for four friends living all over the country. It's early, but so far so good. I have reactivated a creative part of my brain that's been in atrophy for 20 years and I am loving it. Why did I stop?

Anyway, does anyone want to talk TTRPGs?

Joe Biden Shot My Dog - Vols. I-XL (PBKR), Saturday, 5 December 2020 14:05 (four years ago)

sure

the late great, Sunday, 6 December 2020 04:24 (four years ago)

So our necromancer isn't evil or obsessed with death, he's trying to heal/resurrect the dying/dead and hasn't perfected things yet.

Joe Biden Shot My Dog - Vols. I-XL (PBKR), Sunday, 6 December 2020 14:48 (four years ago)

four weeks pass...

Update: I'm contemplating having the PCs encounter an evil chef patterned after Guy Fieri. Need a catchphrase.

Jimi Buffett (PBKR), Sunday, 3 January 2021 14:14 (four years ago)
