..to be determined. This will be a daytime/afternoon thing.

I have the DVDs of all three movies in question. We will show in order:
Can't Stop The Music!
The Apple
Xanadu (if people feel up to it by then)

I will be getting my place ready and am willing to host, but if others want to host this as well, that's fine with me.

IF ONLY TO BE THERE.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 19 February 2005 21:57 (twenty years ago)

Althoug it is not openly said, the entire film is filled with gay men, gay eroticism even an entire gay neighbourhood (Greenwich Village).

It just oozes gay!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 19 February 2005 21:57 (twenty years ago)

actually, correction, all these movies were released the same year... 1980. Man, Carter picked the WRONG/BEST movies to end his final year of his presidency (and he had to kill Darby Crash, John Lennon, the U.S. participation of the Olympics, AND about 1000 feet of Mt. St. Helens, too!)

donut debonair (donut), Saturday, 19 February 2005 21:58 (twenty years ago)

Quotes from Can't Stop The Music!:

Lulu: Housework is like bad sex. Every time I do it I swear I will never do it again. Until the next time company comes.
Sam: Tacky.

...

Sam: The 70s are dead and gone. The 80s are going to be something wonderfully new and different, and so am I.

...

Helen: Corporate thinking sucks.

donut debonair (donut), Saturday, 19 February 2005 22:01 (twenty years ago)

I've been wanting to see The Apple for a while now. I'm down. Or up. Definitely one of those.

Scott CE (Scott CE), Saturday, 19 February 2005 22:48 (twenty years ago)

You can't begin to imagine until you've actually seen it.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 19 February 2005 22:48 (twenty years ago)

yeah, it might be the most extreme of all those movies. imagine such a thing, if you dare!

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Saturday, 19 February 2005 22:53 (twenty years ago)

i would SO love to come to this (alas, i can't).

christo and jeanne-claude (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 20 February 2005 00:03 (twenty years ago)

Not to step on anyone's toes, but I agree with the implied line of thought that characterizes The Apple as the odd one out among these three... only, unlike Ned, I think it's pretty damned terrible: shit anti-disco twaddle.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 21 February 2005 05:37 (twenty years ago)

I always get that "Steam" song from The Apple stuck in my head.

Mike O. (Mike Ouderkirk), Monday, 21 February 2005 06:17 (twenty years ago)

Being of my age I hate to admit this, but what is "The Apple" about? Ive never heard of it, tho I am guessing what it could be like if it's being lumped with Xanadu et al.. eek.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 21 February 2005 06:22 (twenty years ago)

It's the story of Adam and Eve, with disco music representing the serpent and folk standing in for God.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 21 February 2005 06:34 (twenty years ago)

Oh lordy.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 21 February 2005 06:39 (twenty years ago)

It has to be seen at least once. (And please keep in mind I agree it's terrible anti-disco twaddle. That's precisely why it's so brilliant -- IT'S. SO. BAD.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 21 February 2005 07:58 (twenty years ago)

"The Apple" is AMAZING. And yes, it's anti-disco in theory--in theory, the horrible power-ballad singers are the good guys, and the glittering disco queens are the bad guys. But they're the ones who get all the good songs. Friends who've seen it once were singing half the songs for days afterwards.

I wrote a very long article about "The Apple" and the 40th anniversary of Susan Sontag's "Notes on 'Camp'" last year in The Believer. If anyone wants, I can forward them a copy.

Douglas (Douglas), Monday, 21 February 2005 09:54 (twenty years ago)

Douglas: please, that would be good fun.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 21 February 2005 14:29 (twenty years ago)

i would SO love to come to this (alas, i can't).

Yes, this sounds like it will be a lot of fun.

Leon the Fatboy (Ex Leon), Monday, 21 February 2005 14:33 (twenty years ago)

douglas, i'd love to read that.

christo and jeanne-claude (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 21 February 2005 15:21 (twenty years ago)

My favorite moment of The Apple is the flourish that queenish PR guy gives with his hand after affixing the BIM-mark on his head. A "taa-daa" gesture that gets me every time.

I really wish I liked The Apple more, seeing as I love nearly every other campy "disaster" from that magical year: Can't Stop the Music, Xanadu, Cruising... I'd love to read the article nonetheless, Douglas.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 21 February 2005 17:42 (twenty years ago)

Bump for second request. (The Believer publishes some great film criticism -- B. Kite's Jerry Lewis 2-parter was the best thing I think I've ever read about the guy.)

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 21 February 2005 21:13 (twenty years ago)

i would like a copy!

charleston charge (chaki), Monday, 21 February 2005 21:20 (twenty years ago)

I, too, would enjoy a copy.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 00:24 (twenty years ago)

OK, email notices have been sent. Anyone from out of town going to be in Seattle this Saturday? here's your FAP opportunity.

donut debonair (donut), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 01:55 (twenty years ago)

(of course, count me in on a copy, of course)

donut debonair (donut), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 01:55 (twenty years ago)

ive got xanadu on beta, vhs AND dvd; not to mention i have the LP and its singles. im like, a crazed fan or something.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 02:21 (twenty years ago)

OK the lineup for Saturday:

Kate silver
Matos
Dave Q(!!)
Jen
Martin
myself
maybe Morley Timmons (haven't heard back)
and others!

I'll also be bringing Public Image Limited live on American Bandstand (on VHS) to help cleanse the palette in between "acts" (assuming a VCR is present). Jen said she will bring video goodies as well, I think really old 120 minutes type stuff(?)

looks like it will be a blyaaaasht!

donut debonair (donut), Friday, 25 February 2005 02:35 (twenty years ago)

Douglas, send me a copy too!

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Friday, 25 February 2005 03:56 (twenty years ago)

Oh yeah, Scott CE will be there, I heard.

dave q is the master, jadeez and lentilmen. Matos, Dave, and i were at the mirabeau room listening to a night of 80s funk talking music, and this one rip off of a rip off of Chic's "Good Times" comes on.. Dave q performs a brilliant vocal rendition of "Supernaut" over it.. Yes, THAT "Supernaut". Same key, same tempo... the greatest live mashup ever. I'm still trying to collect parts of myself from the ground.

donut debonair (donut), Friday, 25 February 2005 10:04 (twenty years ago)

ok, we survived...

..barely.

donut debonair (donut), Sunday, 27 February 2005 07:42 (twenty years ago)

I'm glad you're not dead.

Casuistry (Chris P), Sunday, 27 February 2005 08:18 (twenty years ago)

Same here.
