FUCK FUCK FUCK aka massive computer problem/please help

I think I've managed to wipe my hard drive. Everything is gone from my computer - files, programs, the start menu, everything; when I turn it on it will only operate in safe mode, and then there is only A BLANK DESKTOP - and aaargh aaargh if those files are genuinely gone for good AAARGH. In a shock move I have no idea what to do to get it to work again, and no I don't have any of the original cd-roms for things like Windows.

I think it happened when this weird lyrics website started installing random shit, and when I tried to uninstall this one dodgy-looking program (in that add/remove programs box you get to through the control panel) it actually ended up deleting EVERYTHING EVER.

Er, help?

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 21 February 2005 10:42 (twenty years ago)

1st off, calm down.

What version of Windows? Where abouts were your files?

Most likely if the PC still boots in some form then your files are
recoverable, probably in another user account somewhere if it comes to it you take the HDD somewhere and they'll put it in another machine and copy your files off.

If it's XP try pressing f8 when it's starting up and selecting boot from last known working configuration.

If you get it running you'll need to run anti spyware/virus stuff ASAP.

Post as much info about your PC setup as you can.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Monday, 21 February 2005 10:57 (twenty years ago)

If you are using Windows XP or 2000 Try pressing CTRL - ALT- DEL and then selecting new process and typing in "explorer.exe".

Does this bring anything up?

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Monday, 21 February 2005 10:58 (twenty years ago)

If you only deleted a program and not any document files, perhaps you can retreive them by using dos to copy them on to a disk? I don't have any proper/well-informed suggestions, sorry, but I felt so bad that this thread was going unanswered that I had to offer you my sympathy for your situation. I hope it gets fixed.

xpost - phew, people who know more than I do about this

beanz (beanz), Monday, 21 February 2005 11:01 (twenty years ago)

it was Windows 98 SE. when I press Ctrl+Alt+Del there are no programs running at all when it turns on, just the desktop background (and no 'new process' option). There's no start menu, no icons, nothing.

how do I take my hard drive to another computer? What is dos?

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 21 February 2005 11:20 (twenty years ago)

also when it starts up in safe mode, just after the box warning me that it'll be in safe mode there's a box saying that 'Explorer has performed an illegal operation and will be shut own'.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 21 February 2005 11:24 (twenty years ago)

98 SE, fuck that makes things difficult.

My guess some piece of spyware is causing explorer.exe to crash, which is why you have no start menu etc as that is just explorer.exe running as the shell.

Okay what kind of files are on the PC and how big are they, are we talking a few word docs or thousands of mp3s/videos.

Do you have a CD-RW, USB Key or any other writable removeable storage?

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Monday, 21 February 2005 11:34 (twenty years ago)

From task manager you should be able to do file/run or something like that if you do that and type explorer in, what happens?

God it's a while since i've done 98 and this is from memory.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Monday, 21 February 2005 11:38 (twenty years ago)

DOS is an operating system that uses typing instead of mouse-clicks and was microsoft's pre-windows operating system, so it's available on windows computers. You might be able to access it by restarting the computer (if you can't get to the restart through the Start button, press in the power button on the computer for a few seconds until it turns itself off) and as it starts up press F8 or F5 or maybe F3 (different for different computers) repeatedly until there's a bleep and it opens to a text menu. One of the options in the menu might be MS-DOS. If it is, choose it and you'll get a prompt that looks like:
c:\>
or similar. Do you know where your files are? I just realised this could be an awkward way to learn DOS commands. Google for a full list. And a bit pointless if you want to retrieve mp3s and things.

beanz (beanz), Monday, 21 February 2005 11:38 (twenty years ago)

re: files - about 100-200 mp3s I'd guess plus many word docs. it'll be unbelievably shit if they're lost but it's slightly more concerning that the computer is pretty much useless at the moment, I can't see a single way of getting into any program to even retrieve them.

cd-rw - ??? - I have a cd burner, and many cd-rs. I don't know what cd-rw is.

usb key - I don't know what this is either. the computer has a USB port but I don't use it, and my housemate has the USB cable in his room somewhere.

re: task manager - I can't even get into it. when the computer boots there is literally nothing on the screen.

I'll try dos though I wouldn't know where to start with it...

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 21 February 2005 11:45 (twenty years ago)

Alt Ctrl Del will get you task manager it's what you got up when you did

"when I press Ctrl+Alt+Del there are no programs running at all when it turns on"

There's a menu here where you can do file/run and run programs using this we may be able to restore enough functionality to get stuff off/working again but I need to know whether it's working and exactly how fucked explorer is, there are other things we can do here such as run msconfig and remove nasty programmes, run other stuff like the legacy winfile etc.

There are 2 options here get the machine working again or get the files off then reinstall windows.

If I had direct access to the machine I could do either most likely, my advice to you is seek out a geek if thats impossible we'll soldier on.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Monday, 21 February 2005 11:56 (twenty years ago)

when your computer starts up, press F8 - and then choose command line only, and when it finishes loading, type DIR and enter, see if the files are still there.

if so.. you probably need to just reinstall windows.

ken c (ken c), Monday, 21 February 2005 12:05 (twenty years ago)

yes I should say that any London-based computer geeks are more than welcome to come round to mine, I shall provide CAKE and BOOZE.

I can't see any menu when I press Ctrl Alt Del, just the box where normally everythhing which is running is listed. nothing is running, and the only buttons are End Task, Shut Down and Cancel.

is it possible that I have actually deleted everything on my computer? Because after the lyrics site fucked things up the first time (it installed something called 180search assistant) I went to Add/Remove Programs and uninstalled all the dodgy ones which weren't there before - there was one called SideBar? (or something - SideSomething), and when I uninstalled that everything kind of disappeared.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 21 February 2005 12:08 (twenty years ago)

xpost - will try that ken

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 21 February 2005 12:08 (twenty years ago)

you probably haven't deleted everything, but just the stuff that gets windows started. so your datafiles etc. should be fine.

ken c (ken c), Monday, 21 February 2005 12:10 (twenty years ago)

ooh.

after typing DIR lots of stff came up - it says 14 file(s) and 15 dir(s), is this a good sign?? what do I type now?

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 21 February 2005 12:10 (twenty years ago)

cd directoryname will take you into directories so cd into the directory where your files are.

Your not going to be able to do a whole lot with them but at least you'll know they're still there.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Monday, 21 February 2005 12:21 (twenty years ago)

oh I was wrong you cant run programs from 98's task manager bum, shows how quickly you forget stuff when you're not using it.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Monday, 21 February 2005 12:27 (twenty years ago)

If you need to access documents under 1.44Mb urgently and you've got floppy disks you can copy the files. you might need to format the floppy - put the disk in and type format a:

beanz (beanz), Monday, 21 February 2005 12:28 (twenty years ago)

But only if it's unused! Don't do that if it's been used before. Oops.

beanz (beanz), Monday, 21 February 2005 12:29 (twenty years ago)

I don't need anything urgently I don't think, but that's great to know.

how do I know what all the directory names are? cd (program name) doesn't seem to work.

also, what do I do now?

(thanks everyone for your help so far btw, much appreciated)

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 21 February 2005 12:31 (twenty years ago)

dir will show you the directory and file names. dir/p will show you them a screen at a time, if you have too many to read at once.

caitlin (caitlin), Monday, 21 February 2005 12:33 (twenty years ago)

A directory looks like < WINDOWS > but a program or file looks like win.exe or readme.txt.

You won't be able to open most files because you can't run the programs they run on, eg Word, in DOS.

Navigate to the directory with your word docs in it and then type copy followed by the doc name then a: For example
copy docname.doc a:

beanz (beanz), Monday, 21 February 2005 12:40 (twenty years ago)

in the end the best way is to reinstall windows, get somebody with a windows 98 install CD (and a startup disk) and reinstall everything. if you are coming to freaky trigger this thurs there may be people who can help.

ken c (ken c), Monday, 21 February 2005 12:44 (twenty years ago)

I'm having a lot of difficulty navigating around dos, I'm not understanding it at all.

ken if I reinstall windows does that mean I should retrieve all the files beforehand? or will they be there after I reinstall? I'm not coming to FT unfortunately but I can email someone my address and pay for postage if necessary...

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 21 February 2005 12:47 (twenty years ago)

if you reinstall Windows it *shouldn't* trash any of your data files, so long as you don't reformat the disk. However, it's always a good idea to make copies of them beforehand Just In Case.

caitlin (caitlin), Monday, 21 February 2005 12:49 (twenty years ago)

also: will reinstalling windows bring back *all* of the programs? or just the windows ones? there was a cd-burning one, also slsk, bt broadband &c. I wouldn't know how to bring them back if they're lost.

also - once I get a windows 98 cd is it really obvious how to reinstall without buggering everything up? or shall I get someone over to make sure everything goes OK (ken???)

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 21 February 2005 12:53 (twenty years ago)

It *might* - it depends how much of your existing registry is left intact. The problem here is that the more of your existing setup is left untouched, the more chance that reinstalling without deleting *everything* first won't fix it.

To reinstall, you just switch the computer on with the CD in the CD drive (although you might have to alter the settings to get it to look at the CD drive before the hard disk)

caitlin (caitlin), Monday, 21 February 2005 12:56 (twenty years ago)

Get someone who knows what they are doing to do this. Installing 98 over the top should work okay but some things might not, also you may need drivers for any hardware not recognised by Windows.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Monday, 21 February 2005 13:00 (twenty years ago)

aaargh. I'm going to go and buy some floppy disks now in a bid to save some of the word docs, maybe dos will make more sense tonight. if anyone has a windows 98 se CD please please let me know!! and thanks again to everyone who's helped so far.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 21 February 2005 13:01 (twenty years ago)

Alex, this kind of problem is exactly what small boutique computer shops are for. It sounds too complex for you to do, to be honest, even with someone remotely holding your hand.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 21 February 2005 13:37 (twenty years ago)

Does 98 not have savepoints? Not that I am sure how you'd get back to one without getting in to Windows.

This may be caused by a virus, but I think it could also be caused by a hard disk failure. In the latter case, reinstalling may not get you far; and depending on the virus, it may only temporarily fix the former case.

Main point: you have almost certainly not lost what data you have there, with any luck at all. That can be recovered. I'm not certain whether your computer can be.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 21 February 2005 14:25 (twenty years ago)

Dude its not Final Fantasy 7

Fat Anarchy on Airtube (ex machina), Monday, 21 February 2005 14:31 (twenty years ago)

XP has restore points, 98 does not.

Sorting problems like this across the web makes me frustrated if I was there I could sort it in 30 mins or so.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Monday, 21 February 2005 14:54 (twenty years ago)

in the end the best way is to reinstall windows, get somebody with a windows 98 install CD (and a startup disk) and reinstall everything.

WAIT!

If you have saved your files in the My Documents folder, there's a very good chance that just reinstalling Windows will wipe out all of your files! If you saved them in another directory you should be fine, but if you save them automatically into the My Documents folder, find a way to move them first. You can do that by creating a directory at the C: level from the command line:

mkdir c:\recovered

Then you'll have to find the original files you want to save in the My Documents folder, and copy them to the new directory. You can probably do this by cd'ing (change directory) to the My Documents dir and when you're there, typing "copy *.* c:\recovered". (It's been a while since I've dealt with Win98, so I'm a bit rusty.)

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 21 February 2005 16:38 (twenty years ago)

I'm also trying to remember the directory path to get to the My Documents folder in Win 98...was it as simple as "c:\my documents"? Or was it buried in the Windows directory?

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 21 February 2005 16:41 (twenty years ago)

Dude its not Final Fantasy 7

I CAN LEAD YOU THROUGH THE KERNEL DISPLACEMENT RECOVERY PROCESS

Sven Bastard (blueski), Monday, 21 February 2005 16:43 (twenty years ago)

It'll be C:\MYDOCU~1 (remember, we're talking DOS filenames here)

caitlin (caitlin), Monday, 21 February 2005 16:51 (twenty years ago)

caitlin you giant nerd.

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 21 February 2005 16:52 (twenty years ago)

Dos 7 supports long filenames I thought?

wouldn't the easiest way to recover to have someone plug their disk into his computer?

also - isn't there someway to start taskman.exe? Maybe control escape?

Fat Anarchy on Airtube (ex machina), Monday, 21 February 2005 16:55 (twenty years ago)

Oh god oh god I am not liking the sound of this. I can get hold of a Win98 CD on Wednesday but am far too petrified to progress any further by myself PLEASE SOMEONE COME TO MY HOUSE.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 21 February 2005 16:58 (twenty years ago)

I will if you cut my hair for me. I don't know anything about computers though. Um.

alix (alix), Monday, 21 February 2005 17:01 (twenty years ago)

I will cut your hair for you!

(I don't know anything about cutting hair btw)

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 21 February 2005 17:02 (twenty years ago)

The DOS you get with Win98 doesn't support long filenames if you boot into it from the F8-menu.

A really really horrible hack that might be worth trying:

Boot into DOS
Edit the file C:\WINDOWS\WIN.INI
Change the line 'run=' to 'run=PROGMAN.EXE' (without the quotes)
Reboot!
*Hopefully* this will make it fire up the old Win3.1 Program Manager when it boots, which at least gives you a "Run..." menu item that you can use to start programs and so on.

caitlin (caitlin), Monday, 21 February 2005 17:02 (twenty years ago)

ooh that sounds promising. I will try it when I get home.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 21 February 2005 17:05 (twenty years ago)

is the startup group processed by explorer.exe?

Fat Anarchy on Airtube (ex machina), Monday, 21 February 2005 17:06 (twenty years ago)

It's not a laptop, is it? I can try fixage if you bring it when you come to Oxford, if it were.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Monday, 21 February 2005 17:08 (twenty years ago)

no unfortunately, it's an elderly and cantankerous PC.

is the startup group processed by explorer.exe?

I'm afraid I don't actually understand anything in this sentence :(

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 21 February 2005 17:13 (twenty years ago)

Ooh, that's another good tip. Back up all the files in C:\WINDOWS\STARTM~1\PROGRAMS\STARTUP and then delete the originals. If there's a folder called C:\WINDOWS\ALLUSER~1, do the same with C:\WINDOWS\ALLUSER~1\...\STARTM~1\PROGRAMS\STARTUP (where '...' is every folder under ALLUSER~1)

caitlin (caitlin), Monday, 21 February 2005 17:17 (twenty years ago)

(that should be ALLUSE~1 instead of ALLUSER~1)

caitlin (caitlin), Monday, 21 February 2005 17:18 (twenty years ago)

OK I've tried most of the things recommended but I don't think I should continue - I really can't figure DOS out at all, nothing has started working again, I can't even figure out how to make backups of the files, and I'm a bit worried that I'll fuck things up even more (if indeed this is possible). I might get some computer people in: London people, a) how much is this likely to cost me, and b) can anyone recommend a firm which isn't going to rip me off?

(thanks everyone for the help btw, it really is appreciated)

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 12:41 (twenty years ago)

eight years pass...

ok i have a really fucking mysterious and super annoying computer (mac) problem

so i've been working on a project in final cut for the last few weeks

today i go to open it—by clicking on the project name in the "recently opened" menu

it doesnt open for some reason. weird!

so i go to look for the file itself in the folder where i left it (on an external HD)...

it's GONE.

the file has just... disappeared.

it's not in the trash. spotlight can't find it anywhere.

perhaps coincidentally, perhaps not, NONE of the autosaves will open—assuming they're all corrupt.

i've NEVER encountered this before—a file just going missing.

help.

please help.

Versions help?

Euler, Thursday, 15 August 2013 14:49 (twelve years ago)

currently googling to see if there's any good process for this, most of what I'm finding says "use ls -ai from a Terminal window to see if the files are really gone" which doesn't do much to explain why this would happen in the first place

can you navigate to the external drive without problem?

OH MY GOD HE'S OOGLY (DJP), Thursday, 15 August 2013 14:50 (twelve years ago)

is that an app?

idk about this at all and don't use a mac, but googling has some ideas about downloading an app to view hidden files or booting into safe mode and looking in the root directory for 'previous versions'.

festival culture (Jordan), Thursday, 15 August 2013 14:53 (twelve years ago)

open it, type

cd "/Name of Your External Hard Drive"

and see if that works. if so, navigate to the right folder by typing

cd FOlder/Folder/etc

and then typing ls -ai to list the files in that folder

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 15 August 2013 14:53 (twelve years ago)

dunno if this is in any way helpful

"ls" is a command for listing the contents of a directory in Linux and -ai are options that modify its behavior ("a" prints out hidden files, "i" includes the OS index number for the file, which helps the OS keep track of its files and directories; more info on options can be found here: http://linux.about.com/od/commands/l/blcmdl1_ls.htm)
