This is the thread where we write a Bob Dylan song with characters drawn from the ILX universe. I'll start.

Jonny's in the dungeon, mapping up the role play
Posting up the jpeg saying U R ALL GAY

Ken L (Ken L), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 02:42 (twenty years ago)

(fuckin' good luck ken, i already tried this three days ago on ILM with dan perry and it died the death of a dog)

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 03:35 (twenty years ago)

It was a noble effort, Mr. Puss. (Maybe it just needed my sparkling name in the subject line.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 03:42 (twenty years ago)

I'm hurt about the demise of my Judas Priest film script. I think all ILXors harbour secret pain about threads that they started which everyone ignores. It's so humiliating.

On the bright side, the Mongrels and Sheepfuxors occasionally play a game we call 'Thread Pachinko'. In this game, two players launch a topic. The winner is the one which drops to the bottom of the list first.

thee music mole, Tuesday, 22 February 2005 03:54 (twenty years ago)

For example, I may post a topic, 'Hey Steve, empty your in tray!' and you may post a topic, 'RFI: Escutcheon grommits, 5mm only'. The aim is to think up a topic that is either so boring or so specialised that no-one answers.

thee music mole, Tuesday, 22 February 2005 03:56 (twenty years ago)

(So unless the tide turns soon, it looks like this is the thread where we lament threads we started that died on the vine.)

Ken L (Ken L), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 03:59 (twenty years ago)

But that was not my dream! :-(

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 04:00 (twenty years ago)

Here's one example of a thread pachinko game. This thread:

Moxx of Balhoon

was pitched up against this one of mine:

Hey Mesmerelda

I can't remember who won but note how hard it is to think of a subject line that ILXors won't answer.

Which is why thread pachinko players sometimes click on 'Unanswered Questions' on the main page and gaze adoringly at these threads. To us, the people who make these threads are the Masters: they can be studied, their lessons absorbed.

thee music mole, Tuesday, 22 February 2005 04:03 (twenty years ago)

I must say, Mr. Mole, that I am sorrowed not to have realized this game was going on. I should pay more attention to my dear sheepfuxors.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 04:04 (twenty years ago)

Looking back at the above example, it's pretty clear to me know that Adam and I were playing, and I won that one - perhaps because someone answered Adam's question first.

thee music mole, Tuesday, 22 February 2005 04:05 (twenty years ago)

Ned, I would consider it a personal honour if you would have a game with me right now.

thee music mole, Tuesday, 22 February 2005 04:06 (twenty years ago)

Need article on progesterone inhibitors by Reilly and (I think) Demetrius.

It goes without saying that people reading this thread are not allowed to sabotage the game. Be honourable.

thee music mole, Tuesday, 22 February 2005 04:09 (twenty years ago)

Damn, I've lost already!

thee music mole, Tuesday, 22 February 2005 04:13 (twenty years ago)

Dust on receipts

xpost - Alas! Well there's my entry.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 04:14 (twenty years ago)

Less is more.

jim wentworth (wench), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 04:15 (twenty years ago)

jim's right! You know, I never thought of it before but it's true.

I'll launch another one and we'll call it round 2 Ned.

It's true.

Here's my link again:

thee music mole, Tuesday, 22 February 2005 04:20 (twenty years ago)

Aaron that's beautiful! I just read it.

thee music mole, Tuesday, 22 February 2005 04:21 (twenty years ago)

Oops, I think you just lost again! Sorry, I'm skipping around doing a few things, I fear it'll have to wait for another time to do a proper game.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 04:28 (twenty years ago)

It goes without saying that people reading this thread are not allowed to sabotage the game. Be honourable.

I confess that I pipped your thread before reading request. Please bear in mind that as an American I canot be "honourable."

j.lu (j.lu), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 04:30 (twenty years ago)

hahaha

thee music mole, Tuesday, 22 February 2005 04:32 (twenty years ago)

i loved thread pachinko! although i was always only a mere spectator, but a passionate one at that.

gem (trisk), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 04:35 (twenty years ago)

I did one about pantograph parts for W-class trams. If I remember correctly that one lasted ages.

Autumn Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 04:36 (twenty years ago)

That was a brilliant one.

Did you like the way Ned excused himself? Such a gentleman. The rest of you Americans would have said something offensive like 'meh'.

thee music mole, Tuesday, 22 February 2005 04:37 (twenty years ago)

an american with honour

gem (trisk), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 04:38 (twenty years ago)

Would anyone like to play a round of this game with me?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 09:46 (twenty years ago)

yeah okay

Masked Gazza, Tuesday, 22 February 2005 09:48 (twenty years ago)

ferenc fricsay, vernon handley

is mine

Masked Gazza, Tuesday, 22 February 2005 09:51 (twenty years ago)

This is mine.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 09:55 (twenty years ago)

Gold.

Autumn Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 09:56 (twenty years ago)

I'm a bit confused about the rules: do you lose immediately after someone posts something to your thread, or do you have to wait and see who's thread disappears first from the New Answers screen?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 09:58 (twenty years ago)

This thread makes me suspicious that all the threads I've been posting to all these months are just pawns in a game. Or pwns.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 10:01 (twenty years ago)

I'm a bit confused about the rules: do you lose immediately after someone posts something to your thread, or do you have to wait and see who's thread disappears first from the New Answers screen?

-- Tuomas

Yes, that was never made clear was it? It seems the former is the one day game, while the latter is the full 5 day test match.

thee music mole, Tuesday, 22 February 2005 10:24 (twenty years ago)

But the latter can be a one day game as well, if you just don't click "Show All Updated Threads".

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 10:26 (twenty years ago)

I think the lightning version - one post and you lose - is the correct format for these Ritalin-inflected times. If you both disappear, it's a tie.

thee music mole, Tuesday, 22 February 2005 10:29 (twenty years ago)

Both thread titles sinking fast. They're both very clever, those titles. I can't imagine anyone answering either of them.

thee music mole, Tuesday, 22 February 2005 10:34 (twenty years ago)

Haha, I thought I'd picked the most obscure late night TV series ever, but at least according to IMDb Forever Knight has a bunch of followers and it's even been released on DVD? Who would've guessed?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 10:39 (twenty years ago)

This looks like fun.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 10:45 (twenty years ago)

We have a winner! Well done, Masked Gazza.

thee music mole, Tuesday, 22 February 2005 10:47 (twenty years ago)

Oh hyang on, wait a minute... which one of you won? We may need the third unpire for this one.

thee music mole, Tuesday, 22 February 2005 10:49 (twenty years ago)

ha ha they were both answered at 10:43 AM!

Masked Gazza, Tuesday, 22 February 2005 10:51 (twenty years ago)

According to "Show All Details" they were both answered at the same minute, so unless we have eye witnesses I think it's a tie.

(x-post)

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 10:52 (twenty years ago)

Another round, anyone?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 10:55 (twenty years ago)

OK.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 10:56 (twenty years ago)

Here's mine.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 11:00 (twenty years ago)

Here is mine:

Recommend me a good review of 18th century Lagrangian dynamics

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 11:02 (twenty years ago)

Damn, I think you might win this one...

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 11:03 (twenty years ago)

Mine's up.

Autumn Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 11:03 (twenty years ago)

Dammit Adam, I actually know what you're talking abou thahaha but i cant post!

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 11:03 (twenty years ago)

So it's a three-way match then?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 11:03 (twenty years ago)

Your thread *idea* is actually quite funny, even if the typo isn't. (3x xpost)

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 11:04 (twenty years ago)

omg Trayce, if BAD was on Shirl's I will chuck the world's biggest spack.

Autumn Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 11:05 (twenty years ago)

Nah, I dont know if they were, but they were prolly on Afternoon show or sommat.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 11:08 (twenty years ago)

I was going to say 'Off the Dish' but couldn't remember the name before.

Autumn Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 11:10 (twenty years ago)

;)

charleston charge (chaki), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 11:12 (twenty years ago)

A formidable challenge.

Autumn Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 11:14 (twenty years ago)

Crikey.

Anyone who has no idea whats going on here will think half the boards on drugs.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 11:16 (twenty years ago)

You do one Trayce.

Autumn Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 11:17 (twenty years ago)

We should let this thread slide down the board*, otherwise, everyone will click on it and figure out what is going on (in fact, that may be happening already)

*I am aware of the paradox of posting to a thread and sending it to the top of the board when the idea is to have it move down the board

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 11:19 (twenty years ago)

I can't think of anything boring enough haha.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 11:19 (twenty years ago)

I'm in (sorry barry)

Masked Gazza, Tuesday, 22 February 2005 11:24 (twenty years ago)

Well no-one knows a damn thing about Lagrangian dynamics except Trayce and Barry. That much is clear. But, looking today at Masked Gazza's and charleston's equally sterling work, I think we can say that Thread Pachinko is the true winner this season.

thee music mole, Tuesday, 22 February 2005 21:22 (twenty years ago)

Is it a three-way tie? Do we head to a playoff?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 21:23 (twenty years ago)

Thread Pachinko is the best thing ever. I am taking myself off for a brisk walk because the temptation to post something, anything, on that Johann Rosenmiller thread is overwhelming.

estela (estela), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 21:28 (twenty years ago)

Thread Pachinko is the best thing ever.

estela (estela), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 21:29 (twenty years ago)

YES!! 3 Way Tie For Last!!! but i dont think mine counts cuz i didnt directly challenge anyone.. :(

charleston charge (chaki), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 21:41 (twenty years ago)

Why not? It's like pooh sticks. Any number of people can launch a thread, as long as they all do it at once.

thee music mole, Tuesday, 22 February 2005 21:43 (twenty years ago)

I hate my computer now.

estela (estela), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 21:46 (twenty years ago)

(Brief message from the Thread Creator:

Genghis Khan he could not keep
all his mongrels suppied with sheep

OK, go back to your Thread Pachinko now)

Ken L (Ken L), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 22:02 (twenty years ago)

Ken's right. Bob Dylan's couplet stylings must be involved somehow. Thread ancestry must be respected.

thee music mole, Tuesday, 22 February 2005 22:05 (twenty years ago)

For the future, we should also remember not to directly link our threads, because trackbacks on unanswered threads also look suspicious.

Sorry Ken.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 00:29 (twenty years ago)

two months pass...
Another match?
