anyone know any way of increasing the number of changes you can make to DVD zone on a G4? the limit's 5, which isn't enough if you're buzzing from here to there...

search for g4 dvd firmware patch

The firmware patch is one way to go. Voids the warranty on your drive of course, but it works. Just be sure to follow the directions. Then find Region X and you're set. Have a look here: http://forum.rpc1.org/viewtopic.php?t=23360

ken - any instructions for how to actually change it to 0?

cute, do the google, there are plenty of instructions out there.

There is no way to actually set it to 0. The newer DVD hardware cross-checks the DVD's region against the software/firmware-set region. If they don't match, it will give you the option to reset your region (if you still have changes left).

What the firmware revision does is makes the firmware-set region unlocked. Which means that you can then use a program, like RegionX (my rec, as well), to change the firmware-region limitlessly. The only annoying thing is that you have to fire up RegionX whenever you run out of changes. You can't run RegionX without the firmware patch, and the firmware patch alone is useless. You need first the patch, then RegionX.

Also, MAKE CERTAIN THAT YOUR DVD MODEL IS THE RIGHT ONE FOR THE FIRMWARE PATCH! Else you'll have no more DVD player, natch.

i get this message everytime on my g3 powerbook, no matter what dvd i put in. i found that if i hit cancel on the "change region" message, i can then play the dvd fine. apples dvd software (OS 9) is a buggy piece of shit though. even more retarded: apple's OS X dvd player software is not compatible w/ non-firewire g3 powerbooks, which means you have to reboot into OS 9.
