Kids Sitcoms: Classic Or Dud

Why do they make them, these kids sitcoms? From the one catchphrase flogging Diff'rent Strokes to the robot child abomination that was Little Wonder (I think) via Punky Brewster. We all know that kids are annoying, and we all know that annoying does not equal funny. Since then Nickleodeon has rocked up with shite like Kenan and Kel to perpetuate this nonsense. Have wholesome family aimed (but really kid aimed) sit-coms ever been good?

How old are ya Pete?

Mike Hanle y, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You have not had to endure the horror of children's ITV sitcoms like Spatz. Sicoms with children in - ok. Sitcoms for children - absolute dud.

Jonnie, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh contraire, I am well aware of the horror that is Spatz - made more bizarre for its obvious English origins yet being filmed in NTSC with a very American style laughtrack predicated by absolutely no jokes at all. Vas Blackwood's finest moment?

My age is a cloesely guarded secret - nevertheless I think with my references above it should be pretty easy to guess.

Pete, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Spatz was very odd. Joint production necessities meant that cast was half Canadian and half British, the Canadians playing the bosses and the British Grange Hill graduates their burger flipping minions. Perhaps this was part of a secret plot to subconciously persuade British children that the Canadians were their natural overlords.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I will reveal Pete's date of birth to the highest bidder. I expect to make at least 3 pounds out of this one.

Spatz was scary.

Emma, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Feh, bidding. Are you not going to tell us out of the kindness of your heart?

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No. My heart is not kind, it is hard and mercenary. Gimme cash. Now.

Emma, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

kids sitcoms rule - punky was pre-post feminist; small wonder was robot woman meister; metal mickie - boogie woogie woogie; and my latest favourite has this blue alien kid going to school - very strange but fun.

Saved by the bell..DeGrassi Junior High...

Mike Hanle y, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Degrassi Junior High was not a sitcom. It was a issue based soap type drama which just happened to be funny cos everyone in it was Canadian - and we had been conditioned by Spatz to find Canadians funny.

Pete, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

WHat about(aboot) You Can't DO That Type of SHit On Television?

Mike Hanle y, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Have you been snorting Viagara? Saved by the bell was great, but was it solely aimed at children? I hope not because I loved it. Though not The New Class, natch.

Jonnie, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sitcoms for kids are a dud. They are always filled with stage school kids. The BBC has some real stinkers.

james e l, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Does ALF count? Because ALF was magnificent in many, many ways.

stevie t, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Saved by the bell! Wow I should have grown out of that sooner. Whatabout kids' soap operas? Not just degrassi, but that short-lived item on Nickelodian -- Thirteen, I think it was called. Any others?

Sterling Clover, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Does "My So-Called Life" count?...that was good...what about the Wonder Years, I mean it was about a kid!

james e l, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Thirteen -- I thought I was the only person who remembered this show. Ack! Forget sitcoms, kids soaps are where it's at.

Nicole, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Can we talk about We've got It Maid again? I like whe we do that.

mark s, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Thirteen was good. Real good. Like Aaron Spelling good.

Sterling Clover, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I love kids TV . It seems so fun, innocent, brightly colored.
Everyone seems happy. I watch a little bit of the sitcoms, some of the cartoons and life actions. Sesame Street, Blues Clues, Powerpuff girls, Recess.

anthony, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Alf gets the Mike Hanley seal of approval.

Mike Hanle y, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Was there ever a second part to the cliffhanger final episode? I watched the first half (raptly of course) and then looked for months to find the second part, never found it. WHAT HAPPENED TO ALF

Josh, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Mike Hanley seal of approval"? What the fuck is that? Do you mean the "Mike Hanle y seal of approval"?

Josh, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You Can't Do That On Television: worth it solely for watching early- adolescent Alanis Morrissette get the green slime treatment.

suzy, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Don't mention Spatz again. I had completely forgotten about it until now.

DG, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sorry DG - I can still sing the theme tune. Honourable mention of Press Gang? And what about gritty cutting edge Casualty for nippers, Childrens Ward?

sarah, Friday, 13 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

eleven months pass...
"Maid Marian & Her Merry Men" is one of my favourite sitcoms, children's or otherwise. Utter lunacy for kids, has Pythonic elements about it.
