This is the thread where you come up with a new middle name for Edward O

My middle name is Jan. Yes. I am Edward Jan. I hate it. It's awful. I don't care if it just means "John" - my parents called my older brother "Jon", as they clearly knew calling him "Jan" would result in him being beaten up, so why didn't they spare me it as a middle name?

Anyway, I was toying with the idea of a complete name change a few years ago, but I've come to accept - even like - my first and last names well enough. But JAN, no, this really, really has to go.

So, I'm taking suggestions. It was mentioned that I should perhaps keep the middle initial and go with another J name, but I don't know. But something must be done. In the state I used to live in, it was dead cheap to change your name, so I figure if I get a good 'un, I'll do it next time I'm "home".

(Argh, first thread in months, please do not stiff on me).

If O is really your final initial, it might be wise/fun to pick something that will make an interesting monogram. Like Gus, for EGO, or Morris, for EMO, or Laverne for ELO.

Huk-L, Wednesday, 23 February 2005 05:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, O is my final initial. ELO is better than all EMO put together. I do enjoy "Livin' Thing", so that's worth thinking about.

Can't do William. Another person I've had this discussion with wants to change his middle from Wayne to William, so I MUST BE DIFFERENT. No "J" suggestions?

James is good. My mother, horrified as she was, reluctantly suggested Joel. My university professor, who thinks I'm an idiot for asking, proffered "Jodhpurs". She may not have been serious.

I left it out because I liked the idea of batshit insane suggestions, and also to get a nice field of random sensible responses. Which seems to have worked, in the sense that it hasn't. Marvellous.

edward o (edwardo), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 22:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I think something in "..." works OK.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 22:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Stick with Edward J. and when asked what it stands for alternate between the following:

'Jiggle-tits'
'Jelly-filled'
'Jism Hands'
'Jerusalem Artichoke'
'Jim Dandy'
'Jason XIII'
'Jinormopizzle'
'Jansenist'

Michael White (Hereward), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 22:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Jiggle-tits. Pure genius.

I've got to get back on the electoral roll at my new address, so I reckon I can "try" one of these out and see how it looks on the acknowledgement card I'll get back when it's done. (Yes, it's perfectly legal to do this.).

James, I suppose, seems to be consensus!

edward o (edwardo), Thursday, 24 February 2005 01:55 (twenty-one years ago)

gem (trisk), Thursday, 24 February 2005 01:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Jan is good - i wish i were called Jan.

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 24 February 2005 01:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Start pronouncing it "yan" like Jan Hammer.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 24 February 2005 01:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I already tried that, Aaron, just to underline the fact that it is not a woman's middle name. What's the correct pronunciation of "Jan" if you're a Slav? Is it to make the "J" a "Y"? Why don't I already know this?

edward o (edwardo), Thursday, 24 February 2005 02:01 (twenty-one years ago)

oh i just assumed it WAS Jan with Y-sound.

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 24 February 2005 02:09 (twenty-one years ago)

It really ought to be, but since I seldom actually use it in speaking, I only notice it WRITTEN, and my brain still processes it as a J as in the feminine name. My parents pronounce it as a J as well.

edward o (edwardo), Thursday, 24 February 2005 02:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Why don't I already know this?

you hav clearly just made the whole thing up!

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 24 February 2005 02:13 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah i think it might possibly be jan with a 'y' if you're slav. my gran was croatian and her name was jacobina but pronounced yacobina

gem (trisk), Thursday, 24 February 2005 02:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Jacob! there's yr answer!

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 24 February 2005 02:18 (twenty-one years ago)

hey i think jed could be onto something!!

gem (trisk), Thursday, 24 February 2005 02:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Pangolino again, Thursday, 24 February 2005 02:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't really like the way "Yan" sounds either, especially between the two other names.

Yed, hehe.

edward o (edwardo), Thursday, 24 February 2005 02:21 (twenty-one years ago)

My uncle is Swedish and his first name is Jan, pronounced Yan.

kate/papa november (papa november), Thursday, 24 February 2005 02:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, can't be Jacob, because I've only ever met one Jacob in my life and I really, really hated him and he really, really hated me. So nix to Jacob.

I'll write James on the form and see if I can scan it in for general approval. That sounds good.

edward o (edwardo), Thursday, 24 February 2005 03:46 (twenty-one years ago)

edward o (edwardo), Thursday, 24 February 2005 04:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, man, did no one suggest "Edward Edward O."? Because that would be awesome.

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 24 February 2005 04:46 (twenty-one years ago)

How do you pronounce your surname, Edward?

Michael Philip Philip Philip Philip Annoyman v1.0 (Ferg), Thursday, 24 February 2005 18:21 (twenty-one years ago)

With considerable difficulty. My Polish relatives use o/koolich - that first O being short. My father, who's long since Anglicized himself and thus the name, says Okyu/litz. I prefer the former, more melodic.

edward o (edwardo), Thursday, 24 February 2005 21:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Then your middle name should be pronounced as something like 'yawn', right?

Michael White (Hereward), Thursday, 24 February 2005 22:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Yep, that's vaguely how I say it when I'm forced to. Liking the way "James" looks there, right about now.

edward o (edwardo), Thursday, 24 February 2005 22:14 (twenty-one years ago)

If your family's of Polish origin and gave you a Polish name why are you letting a mob of anglocentric Aussies incite you you to self-loathing? Has Australia ever come up with a Chopin or a Paderewski (whose middle name, incidentally, was Jan too)?

Michael White (Hereward), Thursday, 24 February 2005 22:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Only one half of my family is Polish, and it's not down to self-loathing at all. I like my surname a LOT, but I have never warmed to "Jan". I wouldn't particularly have liked "John", "Jean", "Ivan" or "Sean" or any of the other myriad names that mean the same thing as "Jan" either.

edward o (edwardo), Thursday, 24 February 2005 22:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Johannes neither? My favorite version of 'John' is Old French 'Jehan'. I knew a girl once named 'Jehanne' which is probably what Joan of Arc was called.

Michael White (Hereward), Thursday, 24 February 2005 22:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, what am I talking about? Ivan is GRATE. Jehan, interesting, pronounced the same way as "Jean"?

edward o (edwardo), Thursday, 24 February 2005 22:57 (twenty-one years ago)

why are you letting a mob of anglocentric Aussies incite you you to self-loathing?

I have no problem with Jan, it was Edward who said he didn't like it. Edward and James just work together. Only reason why I suggested it.
