i-pod question : library management issues

Hey I finally got one of these beasts and it's fantastic. But I have a question, possibly a dumb question, but here goes : - I am rapidly using up hard disk space on my computer and will reach that point before all 40GB of the ipod is full. So :

is it best to delete stuff from the library once it's on the i-pod to free up space for new music? What are the pitfalls here? I think if I do this, I must set i-tunes to update the i-pod manually, rather than auto update, to avoid inadvertantly deleting stuff on the i-pod? Is this right?

Also if I do this and THEN want to delete tunes which are on the i-pod and not in the library, I think there's a manual way to do this from i-tunes, isn't there?

Are there any other potential pitfalls of having your library and i-pod contents out of synch as described?

I know this is a dull topic (and I may be being thick), but any advice would be much appreciated!

i deleted all the music from my laptop once it was on my ipod. you have to set it to manual updating, i can't remember off hand how to do this, but it's easy - i think it's in 'preferences' or something like that. if it's on automatic update then it obviously automatically syncs both libraries.

if you are worried about having to reformat your ipod and thus annoyingly have to reload all the songs would be a pitfall. however i understand there is lots of third party software so you can get what's in your ipod library back onto your computer.

www.ipodlounge.com taught me heaps of stuff, i think the faq had the answers to all of my questions really.

enjoy!

and you delete songs from your ipod by having the ipod library up in itunes while it is connected to your computer, highlighting the song/album you don't want and pressing delete! couldn't be easier.

Yes, of course an external hard drive! What's good?

How reliable are hard disks? I had one - centuries ago - and it didn't work half the time. :-( Could be my own stupidity. Probably was.

Nathalie, I'm willing to bet you have a hard drive right now.

What is ipod updating?

If you have a first generation ipod, it's when it goes out with a later, better ipod.

Lacie hard drives are tanks. cost about a buck a gig.

iPod updating = when you connect your iPod to your computer and it puts new songs on it (either automatically or manually).

manually?

"new" songs?

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 23:48 (twenty years ago)

either the ipod uploads all the songs you've put into itunes automatically, or your can set preferences and upload each song yourself.

Ah, yes, I see. I had an image of you funnelling bits of metallic grey dust out of your computer and into your ipod and then shaking it up a jot.
