Well, I have two, actually:

http://www.sugarpants.net/archives/Pumpkin%20Head.jpg

http://www.sugarpants.net/archives/redhead.jpg

The first is of Drake Beardo and our robot jack-o-lantern. The other is me. It is a glorious picture of the back of my head. I just like them because they happened to turn out better than I expected them to.

obv you mean from behind the lens?

LaToya JaXoN (JasonD), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 22:13 (twenty years ago)

I have better candidates in pictures I've taken on disposable cameras from my 2002 U.S. road trip...

but here are two series of pics that I think contain some of the best ones I've taken..

Graffiti in Reykjavík, Iceland Interior, and the party pics in the London link -- respectively.

The Tracer/Gareth pic may be the best of all of them...

The Tracer/Gareth pic may be the best of all of them...

I must agree. :-)

I hope to finally get a digital camera later this year. Of the pictures I've taken in my life, I like quite a few but none ever have truly captured the moment as it stood.

I really like RJG's ear in my picture, and how he looks jaunty and the green hatted child and woman poking herself in the eye just ignore him. My favourite photo on this thread is Douglas', by a mile.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Thursday, 24 February 2005 00:16 (twenty years ago)

kate, what is the story behind that photo? very cool.

sugarpants (sugarpants), Thursday, 24 February 2005 00:21 (twenty years ago)

Grainy? I dunno. I took it at the highest res. so maybe resizing it and changing the res affected it somehow, unless you're talking about the background which is Tulle and gives the appearance of being grainy when it's really just the grain of the material.

kate/papa november (papa november), Thursday, 24 February 2005 00:23 (twenty years ago)

Hmmm....the story. None really. I'm still working on making up that part.

Last Sat I got myself a model and shot off all my ideas I haven't been able to realise without one :)

I am very proud of this photo, of Dave McComb fronting the Triffids at a gig in 1989 (I think). I was holding the camera above my head all gig, and only a few shots worked but this one worked beautifully.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 24 February 2005 00:57 (twenty years ago)

Wow, thats really cool with the cold coloured background and hard warm light on his face!

kate/papa november (papa november), Thursday, 24 February 2005 00:59 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, the contrast btwn the slide projection and his face lit a diff colour, thats totally why it works, its fab. Sometimes I miss taking proper 35mm SLR photos.

Oh no, Guadalajara won't do. (Kate.), Thursday, 9 October 2008 05:36 (sixteen years ago)

maybe there could be a wiki page.

crusty but benign (kenan), Thursday, 9 October 2008 05:41 (sixteen years ago)

Okay, here goes.

http://kateobriencreative.com/fragonard.gif
Here's the original image by Fragonard

http://kateobriencreative.com/figure1.jpg
I started by painting a backdrop, nothing special just a lot of mottled paint on board.

http://kateobriencreative.com/figure2.jpg
This is the basic setup without the model in the shot. You can see how gaudy and gross it looks before I processed it. That's about $15 worth of artificial roses and Spanish moss.

This is the unedited image. When I took it into processing, basically I made the contrast really low and adjusted the colour temp a lot higher than usual. I also messed the with luminance channel, which is why her skin has that porcelain look about it.

Cropped, processed.

There's a lighting diagram.

The end.

Oh no, Guadalajara won't do. (Kate.), Thursday, 9 October 2008 05:47 (sixteen years ago)

Hmmm...image limit.

I'll try again.

Bloody well done, my dear. Bloody well done.

crusty but benign (kenan), Thursday, 9 October 2008 06:04 (sixteen years ago)

Love the way you got the same effect from a flower as the original did from a flying bird. Better, almost -- what is the bird doing in that original painting? Is it going to kiss her? Unlikely. It's about to smash pointy-beak-first into her face, looks like. Is this a blind bird?

crusty but benign (kenan), Thursday, 9 October 2008 06:19 (sixteen years ago)

Anyway, the flower makes more sense.

crusty but benign (kenan), Thursday, 9 October 2008 06:19 (sixteen years ago)

The "after" photo of that painting:

http://www.cnn.com/resources/potd/1999/03/31/top.fabio.bird.jpg

crusty but benign (kenan), Thursday, 9 October 2008 06:22 (sixteen years ago)

Heh. The name of the original is, "Jeune Fille délivrant un oiseau de sa cage" which I think roughly translates as Young Girl putting her bird back in it's cage :)

Oh no, Guadalajara won't do. (Kate.), Thursday, 9 October 2008 06:22 (sixteen years ago)

Isn't that an artificial bird in the photo?

Kerm, Thursday, 9 October 2008 06:28 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah. I was kind of disorganized with that shoot and had to rely on what could be found down at the mall which was...not exactly what I had in mind. If I'd planned ahead, I could've bought a taxidermy canary on ebay :)

Oh no, Guadalajara won't do. (Kate.), Thursday, 9 October 2008 06:29 (sixteen years ago)

Oh, I thought it was just a wonky white rose.

crusty but benign (kenan), Thursday, 9 October 2008 06:37 (sixteen years ago)

Nah, just a retarded plastic bird with a feather stuck on it.

Kind of kills the mood right?

Oh no, Guadalajara won't do. (Kate.), Thursday, 9 October 2008 06:42 (sixteen years ago)

Kate's photo is amazing.

The match in the air photo is very nice, how did you do that?

Tuomas, Thursday, 9 October 2008 12:05 (sixteen years ago)

quickly, I'm gonna guess

crusty but benign (kenan), Thursday, 9 October 2008 12:09 (sixteen years ago)

All I did was have the match on the end of a pin, (which I removed in PS as that's all I can do with it) a lighter underneath the head of match to ignite without striking it out of shot, all against a black background.

Simple really ;)

not_goodwin, Thursday, 9 October 2008 13:00 (sixteen years ago)

mineminefusic (Finefinemusic), Thursday, 9 October 2008 14:19 (sixteen years ago)

I am very sneakily attempting to add not goodwin as a flickr contact in hopes that I can get access to a larger version of the match to use as desktop pic.

(libcrypt) (libcrypt) (libcrypt), Thursday, 9 October 2008 14:25 (sixteen years ago)

Kate's pic is exceedingly good, but is it really better than the rest of her grade-A+ oeuvre? That's a hard call.

(libcrypt) (libcrypt) (libcrypt), Thursday, 9 October 2008 14:30 (sixteen years ago)

I know, I looked at her other stuff and its all really, really good.

nate woolls, Thursday, 9 October 2008 14:42 (sixteen years ago)

you've been added libcrypt, sneakily steal away!

not_goodwin, Thursday, 9 October 2008 15:03 (sixteen years ago)

Thanks, but you don't upload the big versions to Flickr, do you?

(libcrypt) (libcrypt) (libcrypt), Thursday, 9 October 2008 15:14 (sixteen years ago)

Kate's got the lot, really - the compositional sense, the lighting, the costume and set design, rapport with the subjects, PS skills. It puts us poor snappers to shame!

Funny how I was falling over myself to contribute to this thread 2-3 years ago before I had any idea what I was doing (or while I didn't really have access to my old film stuff). And I wish I hadn't chosen photos of Ava either, cos I should probably keep that to the Parenting thread. And yet, all the best pictures remain those of the kids...

Never mind.

four years pass...

This was taken towards the end of the day at Columbiabad outdoor pool in Berlin. There's a long queue to get up to the 10m board and the next person isn't allowed to climb until the person on the board has jumped. Some people climb up with bravado or hope but change their minds when they get there. Some take two or three minutes to jump when they do arrive at the edge eliciting groans from those waiting. Watching people jump off the 10m board becomes both addictive and hypnotic. This being Germany, on the whole people are not particularly kind to those that take a long time. On the other hand, this being Neukolln it doesn't feel particularly German. At least half of the people at this pool are not German and most of those are middle eastern. This wee guy (maybe 10 or 12) took longer than anyone and spent a good 4-5 minutes walking to the board-edge and back then back to the edge. Finally (but not) he decides to climb back down the ladder eliciting a massive groan from the crowd. The groan makes him change his mind and he walks to the edge, has one wobble then goes for it. I can't believe I managed to actually capture him in mid-air.
