A very disappointing end to what looked to be a promising first day.

Butcher takes wicket = man bites dog!

Ed, anything over 200 cannot be considered a collapse. Merely an average performance. And you can never say what the wicket is doing until the other team bats.

maybe I should be a bit more circumspect, I have just seen the wicket on TV and its very very green.

Ed, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Get Tendulkar out early, please.

Jonnie, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The cricket expert in the office, Gopal, reckons that anything over 200 is a decent score on this pitch, and to take lots of wickets you need to have a bowler with tricksy deliveries. Andy Caddick will be missed.

chris, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Craig White will be a handful on this pitch if he's fit. Hoggard is accurate. All is not lost.

And at least England can't be made to follow on! We are in trouble with the bowling, unless some of our spunky young shavers can make their bones on this tour. Candidates for hero of the series (Tendulkar doesn't count)?

Mark C, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Harbhajan Singh by the look of it so far.

chris, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The England team collapsed some years ago when it started regularly fielding colonials who were only notionally "English". Robert Henderson was right.

I scored a century against the Etonians while playing for Winchester College 50 years ago, just before I first joined the Army. I played village cricket regularly until 1998, at which point I finally gave in to my age and gave up.
