Hey LA folk - what are some clubs that won't make me want to die?

All the clubs I know in town are Hollywood places like the Beauty Bar and Cinespace, and that's a little too cokenaily for my blood. Any of y'all know any clubs where they play good music? Am I stuck going to the Echo for Hang The DJ once a month?

Cinespace is not good? What is cokenaily? Why do you live in LA i you don't want to do all of these fun things?

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 24 February 2005 16:21 (twenty years ago)

Cinespace is weird! Odd sound for bands and the place is set up to have posh dinner and watch a movie...

Johanna Greenway (Johanna), Thursday, 24 February 2005 16:40 (twenty years ago)

sounds great!

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 24 February 2005 16:42 (twenty years ago)

Spencer to thread.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 24 February 2005 16:48 (twenty years ago)

Not so great, bad sound for bands. Well some bands. Club good though...

Johanna (Johanna), Thursday, 24 February 2005 16:50 (twenty years ago)

Personally, I'd love to go to a place where I can have a posh meal, see a noisy band and finish the evening watching a shit-hot movie! How could that be anything other than brilliant?

I dont know what happend to my last post BUT the Cinespace movie thing is seperate, they have that early and then close. The club opens later.

Johanna (Johanna), Thursday, 24 February 2005 17:09 (twenty years ago)

Rage (pronounced "l'raj") in the WHo is pretty down to earth and enjoyable.

Club Bang in Hollywood is a really mellow neighborhood bar.

If you feel like you really want to "get away from LA", try the Ivy Room.

that's almost as good as Jamie Kenedy coming from The Bu.

LaToya JaXoN (JasonD), Thursday, 24 February 2005 17:47 (twenty years ago)

cool people usually hang at the Saddle Ranch and Dublin's on Sunset Blvd.

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Thursday, 24 February 2005 17:48 (twenty years ago)

To answer the original question, sounds like you're a particular kind of indie type who craves "real" experiences and people. I suggest leaving L.A.

Barring that, Spaceland has lots of bands as does Silverlake Lounge. The Smell seems to have a lot of shows (although I've never been there). You should probably listen to KXLU as they announce a lot of shows.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 24 February 2005 18:07 (twenty years ago)

LA hipster trash = even more irritating than NYC hipster trash. Stay in LA but find other hobbies.

HAHA. i found my super duper close friend in a Cobra Snake photo!! made me laugh, he's such a scenester. i guess it was at the beauty bar in LA. what's that like? the SF one is so shit now. total marina slumming it crowd.

LaToya JaXoN (JasonD), Friday, 25 February 2005 00:22 (twenty years ago)

you can tell that that address for the tangier room came from a northerner.

youn, Friday, 25 February 2005 00:24 (twenty years ago)

Haha, I was there that night and I've seen your friend out.

Also JBR, that's a little harsh. People just like to go out and have a good time, see and be seen y'know?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 25 February 2005 00:25 (twenty years ago)

I saw a really really fantastic Hawkwind "recreation" at this place called the Scene - the band performed the entirety of "Warrior at the End of Time", resident LAlien genius Don Bolles was working some serious voodoo shit on the soundboard. The bar seemed pretty cool, altho the name is horrible. This was on my most recent visit to LA, just a few months ago.

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 25 February 2005 00:28 (twenty years ago)

whoa, i'm listening to Hawkwind right now!!

shakey, i have cds for your ass

spencer, say hi to him for me if you see him, his name is Yosi

Who did release magic family out from the base of $499 (deangulberry), Friday, 25 February 2005 00:47 (twenty years ago)

eh - its a wash whose hipsters are more annoying, NY or LA. Both seem to tend to have this weird "What, you don't agree my city is the greatest place on earth? What is wrong with you!!?" attitude that I find really, really irritating.

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 25 February 2005 00:52 (twenty years ago)

Who did release magic family out from the base of $499 (deangulberry), Friday, 25 February 2005 00:59 (twenty years ago)

dood sports are GAY.

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 25 February 2005 01:01 (twenty years ago)

I don't think most L.A. residents, hipster or otherwise, would actually call it the "best place on earth." The problems of traffic, smog and the more usual big city problems are too evident. New Yorkers are much more likely to describe their city that way, while still acknowledging the things that make it a big city. I think people in both cities have a lot of fun.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 25 February 2005 01:02 (twenty years ago)

well let me clarify - PROFESSIONAL sports are gay. I don't have time for any of that silly ass-slappin, phallic-symbol wavin, barely supressed homoerotic commercialized claptrap.

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 25 February 2005 01:03 (twenty years ago)

Spencer, the weird thing to me about LA folk is that they all (and by all I mean "my friends and acquaintances") complain about the very things you mention, sometimes quite passionately, yet they refuse to leave because LA is "where the action is" or some shit like that. WhatEVER.

(and fwiw yes I do love SF, but I'm quite aware that it's not for everbody. and that's how I prefer it anyway)

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 25 February 2005 01:05 (twenty years ago)

eh - its a wash whose hipsters are more annoying, NY or LA. Both seem to tend to have this weird "What, you don't agree my city is the greatest place on earth? What is wrong with you!!?" attitude that I find really, really irritating.

i haven't been to every city on earth. but i do think my city's great. sometimes i hate it (fuck a west side stadium, fuck another mta fare hike, fuck people getting mugged for their ipods and killed for no reason at all). mostly it's great and worth the hassle.

and i like LA. it's not better or worse, just different. there'll always be demographics i dig and don't dig in every city, but that has no bearing on my opinion of the city as a whole.

jbr (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 25 February 2005 01:21 (twenty years ago)

Not me, though.

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Friday, 25 February 2005 04:21 (twenty years ago)

I don't like watching bands. Not unless they have props. I give props to all bands who use props.

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Friday, 25 February 2005 04:23 (twenty years ago)

Have you seen the prop room in Top Secret?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 25 February 2005 06:25 (twenty years ago)

you know, maybe Boardner's would be a good place to check out.

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Friday, 25 February 2005 08:13 (twenty years ago)

It all depends on the night. If you don't want hipsters/do want hipsters, then Cinespace on Tuesdays is or isn't your place. The crowds at Beauty Bar vary a lot. etc etc. There's something at Boardner's called Club Moscow or something which is another hipster type night. I actually never go to any of these places on weekends.

ALSO! Shortstop is apparently reinstalling its dancefloor!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 25 February 2005 09:20 (twenty years ago)

that is truly wonderful news!

Mackro Mackro, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 19:36 (seventeen years ago)

i don't feel like i failed in LA.

chaki, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 19:39 (seventeen years ago)

i love both cities. but they are DAMN expensive cities to live in. i'm not sure if the bubble-burst is going to affect rent prices.

get bent, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 19:40 (seventeen years ago)

x-post - duh chaki i totally know you chose to leave L.A.

Mackro Mackro, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 19:41 (seventeen years ago)

seattle is next for me. buckle up!

chaki, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 19:42 (seventeen years ago)

what I mean by "failing" is trying to burst into a new city with your bad self and then ending up in a deserted hole.. not living somewhere for a while and deciding you're sick of it, both of which is common, but you obviously have more control in the latter situation.

Mackro Mackro, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 19:43 (seventeen years ago)

i have srlsy never had a problem of any sort with a hipster

Spencer Chow, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 19:44 (seventeen years ago)

you don't go to the smell

chaki, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 19:45 (seventeen years ago)

but Spencer, you have an External Hipster Immunity Defense that LEAVES your body and kills hipsters dead!

Mackro Mackro, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 19:46 (seventeen years ago)

you don't go to the smell

THE SMELL IS STILL AROUND. HOLY SHIT.

Mackro Mackro, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 19:46 (seventeen years ago)

I think there is a terminological difficulty with "hipster". Do hipsters go to places like the smell, or to la cita? Seems like completely different scenes.

Spencer Chow, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 19:48 (seventeen years ago)

dude SFJ just wrote about it.

chaki, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 19:48 (seventeen years ago)

The Smell is for hipster children. La Cita is for aging hipsters.

chaki, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 19:49 (seventeen years ago)

I've always thought there was something really nerdy about the smell (maybe because they don't serve alcohol).

Spencer Chow, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 19:49 (seventeen years ago)

the only difference between LA Hipsters and hipsters outside is that LA hipsters *usually* use or abuse a lot more head hair or skin products.

Mackro Mackro, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 19:50 (seventeen years ago)

Not sure I get that - maybe if we're basing all of this on that one thread of pics from club bang a few years ago.

Spencer Chow, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 19:52 (seventeen years ago)

i think it was a joke, Spenny.

chaki, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 19:54 (seventeen years ago)

My One And Only Negative L.A. Hipster Moment:

* San Diego, 1998. I'm down here for the weekend to catch Unwound at the Casbah. G**z** P**k are opening. I've been wanting to try to court G**z** P**k into playing an all ages show in O.C. which a bunch of similar bands.

Earlier in the area, I'm at a Rite Aid or something and I need to replace my San Diego Thomas Bros. guide map. I run into G**z** P**k inside the store. I come up to them to say hello. They're all friendly, but the lead guy in the band looks at what I'm holding and goes "Woah, Thomas Bro'z map". I go, "Yeah, I travel a lot.". Guy: "So... are you like all moneybags?" The rest of the band rolls their eyes at dude, shake their heads and leave. I leave without responding. Guy is left standing in a San Diego Rite Aid looking like a lonely douchebag. Never talked to the band again.

Mackro Mackro, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 19:55 (seventeen years ago)

Not only is the Smell still around, Gang Wizard play there tomorrow night.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 19:57 (seventeen years ago)

YOU SAW GORKY PARK?! AWESOME!

chaki, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 19:58 (seventeen years ago)

Mackro Mackro, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 19:59 (seventeen years ago)

Hahaha but I thought all y'all WUZ teh "smug hipsters" of LA! Ooh ILX and its terminal identity issues...or should i say "hipsters" and their self-denial?

i don't think there is an answer to this question since it depends what you're looking for in a "club," and how you define "good music," bitch pleez. Anyway Mackro Mackro otm: with peoples who "fail" in "LA" with LA solely = ent. industry (lol!), are much more likely to be bitter and blame "Hollywood" which they conflate with "Los Angeles," than others in similar cities. In New York you can blame the competition, your distant father/abused childhood, crack addiction whatevs. You're not going to move out and opine "EW NYC SUCKS! It MADE ME fail!"

In LA, maybe because of its grand master narrative of built-in corruption or whichever irrelevant, endlessly-culturally-regurgitated mythos you'd like to believe, people who aren't getting where they want to go in movieland want to whine "Ugh, LA is horrible, the evil-plastic/"FAKE PEOPLEZ"/two-faced demons that are everywhere screwed me over! It wasn't like this 'Back Home' THERE WERE REAL PEOPLES THERE. You didn't have to be SKINNY all the time WAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH" This knee-jerk blaming of the city, with the whole nothing-to-contribute-I-just-wanna-go-there-strike-gold-move-back-to-Okie mentality, is what makes entertainment-transplants to LA unbearable imo: they never take responsibility, it's always "the system's," fault, the Jewish-Gay Mafia's gonna getchta-GOTCHA etc...when in truth they're just whining because they're still gaffing or wrapping cables when they want to DP, ya know?

Vichitravirya_XI, Thursday, 17 January 2008 11:56 (seventeen years ago)

I miss Chaki. That's only reason why LA sucks at the moment = coz he and his "straight-acting" valley friend r gone - but at least we still have AIM ::sob:: Ah btw my thesis got into santa barbara film fest, so i will be comin up there next weekend and perhaps also wkend afterwards in Feb... and was seriously thinking of driving the 4.5 extra hours up to SF to bemuse someone who wants to pay for my gas - so i will let you know and maybe i can say hey. i would be annoying other friends too, so won't get in your grill fulltime i promise

Spenc-er REALLY funny: i just found out tonight that you "dated" (ie maybe that means went out with once) an ex-coworker of mine (Virginian transplant who talked about "the Hollywood sign" every day!) at So-and-So Company before i disappeared in grad skool....who i feared was ins4n3. So can I say I'm glad it didn't last? I will IM you.

On final thought I'm glad I don't have to worry about the answer to this thread question ever really when for the past half-decade I could just go to hAcKBAR and get my drink on and chat up pretty peoples (oh, does Chakster know) when i feel like it...especially ruled when ilxor Arthur was deejaying. It's kinda hyping even more than usual now (last wkend there was a *line* out front due to "capacity reached" wtf?) but how can you mind when it only increases your chances of, right, "networking" ? (/sarcasm) I'm just glad it's still there esp coz MJ's turned out to be AN UTTER ABSOLUTE FAILURE, (even with its "middle eastern men" night.) ((Like all these wannabe-production designers who've moved here from Dayton: Ugh! GO BACK HOME!)) (yeah i didn't really mean that either. but beware!: i'm an Angeleno...so FAKE i may be REEL)

i guess that might fulfill my posting quota... for this year? if i lamely-temporarily refuse to leave ilx, just blame the strike, right? blows. for now i should leave all y'all with:

http://laist.com/2008/01/16/downtown_gets_t.php - DOWNTOWN GETS THIRD FAMIMA!! That's headline-worthy. Maybe they will overtake the Pinkberry knock-offs (I have witness an Iceberry, Snowberry and even a Yogur-berry) and fill the japanese convenience-store vaccuum forevah. Remember it rhymes with VAGIMA

Vichitravirya_XI, Thursday, 17 January 2008 12:35 (seventeen years ago)

omg the whole thing is paste-worthy. the MAYOR IS COMING TO CELEBRATE THIS THIRD OPENING OF FAMIMA!! NOW WID TRU SUSHI BAR. EVER THINK WHY OTHER CITIES THINK OF US AS WEIRDOS?

Downtown Gets Third Famima!! Now with Sushi Bar
Tomorrow is the ribbon cutting of the third and newest downtown Famima!! at the California Plaza on Grand Avenue near MOCA. It's about time this part of downtown receive some new food options, even if this is quasi Japanese 7-11 style. However, a made-to-order sushi bar will be the centerpiece of this location.

In addition to the few food options at the California Plaza, Performance Row (as we once dubbed it) has a Koo Koo Roo, California Pizza Kitchen, Patina, REDCAT Lounge, Cafe at WDCH, Kendall's Brasserie and the outdoor cafe and restaurant on the Music Center Plaza.

Mayor Villaraigosa will be there tomorrow to deliver remarks and participate in the ribbon cutting ceremony. During the mayor's 2006 Asia trade mission, he made a promise to bring new international investment to Los Angeles. And here it is... some of it at least.

Currently, there are 13 stores in the greater LA area and by the end of 2008, Los Angeles should have a total of 20 Famima!! storefronts.

Open 7 days a week, the new store's meager hours will be 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., Sat/Sun 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

buzza, Thursday, 5 August 2010 17:53 (fifteen years ago)

LA has lots of great night spots, but as much as the venue, it is the timing that determines the hot spot of the moment. Every night is a different promoter, different music, a different crowd, and a completely different experience. Many of the best known club nights are private parties. If you’re not on the list, you’re not getting in. And if you’re eligible to be on the list, you already know where the party is.
