Caffeine is a molecule that dissolves quickly in water, if you don't want it just pour boiling water on your tea, quickly get rid of that water then pour boiling water on it again for the proper infusion .

Tazo tea is yummy.

Yr3k (dymaxia), Saturday, 26 February 2005 17:40 (twenty-one years ago)

cancer preventer, weight-loss facilitator and supposedly inhibits an enzyme responsible for male pattern baldness. dunno about all that, but it is tasty. I mix mine with vodka for a variation on the "ice pick."

Will(iam), Saturday, 26 February 2005 18:12 (twenty-one years ago)

The brand I have here is "Fuji" (I think, too settled in here to go check) and that's quite good.

green tea is also the only good flavour of those Sobe drinks. if only they'd drop 75% of the sugar, I'd probably drink it constantly.

this place makes the best bottled tea i've had in the US:

I love it, I drink two mugs a day, at least. I used to buy Tazo "Zen" but my crappy-ass Jewel store kept running out of stock. So frustrating. So anyway, I bought the Celestial Seasonings "Antioxident" stuff instead, and I love it! Really, just as good as the Tazo stuff and about a buck and a half cheaper...

Stormy Davis (diamond), Saturday, 26 February 2005 20:53 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry, i was close. it's "Fujian" green tea.

I thought for a minute this thread was about Marissa Marchant.

I've only tried one white tea (I'm not exactly sure what that means) which was Celestian Season's Pear flavor, and it was definitely a DUD.

I am drinking the celestial seasonings stuff right now. Stormy otm - it's probably as good as and may well be better than Tazo.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Sunday, 27 February 2005 01:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I've only tried one white tea (I'm not exactly sure what that means) which was Celestian Season's Pear flavor, and it was definitely a DUD.

OTM!!! that stuff was such a disappointment, horrible artificial-tasting vanilla flavor.

I do like the Tazo Green with Ginger very much, I like anything with ginger though.

the green tea I have in the house right now is Salada green tea with purple antioxidants, I'm not sure how much I buy into all that stuff but green tea + blueberries is hard to argue with!

teeny (teeny), Sunday, 27 February 2005 02:18 (twenty-one years ago)

99% of commercially available tea is complete garbage with not nearly as many health benefits as private estate stuff. I order almost exclusively from Seven Cups -- pricey, but it's high grade stuff. And their white tea ("silver needles") is excellent. My mom's kind of a tea snob, so I was raised to be one as well. And for the record, I hate Lipton. If I'm going to drink black tea in a baggie, it needs to be Tetley. British Blend preferred.

Je4nne ƒury (Jeanne Fury), Sunday, 27 February 2005 02:33 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah I'm having a mug of the Celestial Seasonings thing right now. so so good. bah, I misspelled "antioxidant" above, how embarassing. I believe in the health claims though. I feel great right now! and I drank a LOT of beer last night, so feeling good is a minor miracle in itself. the box claims that a serving contains 110% of the RDA of Vitamin C, 20% of Vitamin A, and 20% of Vitamin E!

When I was in Boulder last fall my friend and I made a point to drive by the Celestial Seasonings HQ. we R tea nerds

Stormy Davis (diamond), Sunday, 27 February 2005 02:49 (twenty-one years ago)

teeny I am glad someone agrees with me and I'm not crazy. Christ that stuff was awful. Try the new pomegranet one in a red box with a monkey in the picture. It's great!

Mickey (modestmickey), Sunday, 27 February 2005 03:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Tetley is such a low grade black tea. It's interesting to see it otherwise in the states. In the black tea realm I alternate between Yorkshire (for strength) and clipper. Although the occasional bag of Darjeeling special tippy orange pekoe is very fine.

Ed (dali), Sunday, 27 February 2005 07:54 (twenty-one years ago)

tetley is seen as pretty low-grade in the states too. it's always one of the cheapest teas in the aisle.

jbr (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 27 February 2005 15:22 (twenty-one years ago)

the green tea I have in the house right now is Salada green tea with purple antioxidants, I'm not sure how much I buy into all that stuff but green tea + blueberries is hard to argue with!

the green tea i have in the house is the stash blend of green + white tea. i usually add another kind (just now i added peach) to make a more flavorful cup.

jbr (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 27 February 2005 15:25 (twenty-one years ago)

oh also, blueberries are GREAT for the kidneys and urinary tract.

jbr (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 27 February 2005 15:26 (twenty-one years ago)

The most important thing to remember with black tea is to drink one that's blended for your local water - it really does make a difference to the taste.

Ed's right: Yorkshire Tea is pretty good.

caitlin (caitlin), Sunday, 27 February 2005 15:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Is Tetley really not that good? I always thought it wasn't so bad -- compared to Lipton at least. But now you've all put me on a mission to find a better baggied black tea. I know this is a green tea thread, but any suggestions on the above? Though I really prefer loose tea, it's a hassle to do at work when all I want is a good quick cup.

Oh, and Ten Ren is relatively easy to find loose green tea that is pretty good. Or so says my acupuncturist/herbalist.

And JBR otm about blueberries. A few years ago, IIRC, Time magazine did a story on the 5 best foods for people to eat and they were one of them.

Je4nne ƒury (Jeanne Fury), Sunday, 27 February 2005 16:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Twinings Jasmine Green Tea is the bomb.

Hurting (Hurting), Sunday, 27 February 2005 16:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I'm riding the blueberry train, we have blueberry jam all the time now. I had a cup of the tazo black tea this morning (Awake) and it's pretty nice.

My mom is into all those superfoods, I'm trying to develop a recipe for blueberry-walnut oatmeal cookies. Then you eat them with green tea.

teeny (teeny), Sunday, 27 February 2005 16:19 (twenty-one years ago)

(x-post) hell, yes. But it's gotten tougher to find for me.

My favorite, though, is this ultra - fine, powdery green tea my ex sends me from Tokyo.

Celestial Seasonings Green Tea is awful.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Sunday, 27 February 2005 16:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I drink this pink lady apple flavored green tea that the republic of tea makes. it's pretty good.

jill schoelen is the queen of my dreams! (Homosexual II), Sunday, 27 February 2005 16:47 (twenty-one years ago)

When compared to Lipton, Tetley is great. Lipton is tea for non-tea drinking nations.

If you can find a supplier of Yorkshire or Clipper you'd have a good reliable standard. Yorkshire has the added benefit of being available in both hard and soft water blends as caitlin mentions.

Failing finding a good bagged one (and without knowing what's available I can't really help), I have a great tea glass with a drop in strainer which I use at work which I got at Muji but I'd imagine a lot of japanese stores might have something similar. You can also get all manner of one cup infusers for loose tea.

Ed (dali), Sunday, 27 February 2005 17:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I hate over-perfumed green tea. There's this one brand in the US called...maybe Yogi tea?...so aweful. I also remember going into a fancy tea store and buying an expensive green tea thinking it would be good, and then getting it home and discovering it tasted like a cosmetics counter.

I love dragonwell green tea, although its expensive. I don't have a single consistant vendor.

Also classic: green tea ice cream milk shakes.

mikef-who-mostly-lurks (mfleming), Sunday, 27 February 2005 17:24 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm not a big tea drinker really, but my favourite overall has to be the Earl Grey from Crabtree and Evelyn. I like it much better than Tazo. even my diehard coffee addict bf will go out and buy it for himself.

Kim (Kim), Sunday, 27 February 2005 18:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Has anyone tried a white/green tea mix? I bought a "fusion" brand from Stash Teas (har har) and it was a little too mossy-tasting for me. Perhaps a better brand would yield better results. Whatchoo think?

sugarpants (sugarpants), Sunday, 27 February 2005 20:26 (twenty-one years ago)

green tea CAKE == the goodness. (esp with dark choco. mmm, green tea and chocolate). adding matcha (japanese powdered green tea) to most baked goods results in deliciousness.

Ten Ren teas are awesome; their jasmine especially is gorgeous.

All the white teas I've had have been really good - but then they weren't flavoured and tended to be presents from people who knew about tea, so.

box box box box box (cis), Sunday, 27 February 2005 20:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Bubble Tea is also good, although you have to limit yourself to small doses.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Sunday, 27 February 2005 22:06 (twenty-one years ago)

If you get a chance to go to a tea ceremony, go. The really thick fairly bitter green tea they make for that is the best, and it goes so well with the sweet rice candy things (like wine with cheese)

A Nairn (moretap), Sunday, 27 February 2005 22:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I cannot get into bubble tea. Drinks are supposed to be like liquid, in my book. But tea is great. I have been drinking oolong by the gallon lately.

mouse (mouse), Sunday, 27 February 2005 22:50 (twenty-one years ago)

A true novice weighs in

I have always been a coffee drinker and ony bought my first ever tea just the other day. I got:

Bigelow English Breakfast
One World Earl Grey
Twinings Red Blush (decaf)

I've only had the English breakfast with a bit of cream & lemon and I think I actually like it.

My wife, an occasional tea drinker, says the Red Blush isn't too bad either.

I will have to try some of the green.

jim wentworth (wench), Monday, 28 February 2005 04:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Do not buy Red Rose black tea! It's flavorless and sad, so I still have half a (large) box of it sitting in my room untouched. Tazo Earl Grey tea is nice, though, and Stash chai spice tea. I don't drink much green tea because I usually want to maximize my caffeine intake without drinking anything syrupy (coffee or coke), but it is lovely when I have it.

Maria (Maria), Monday, 28 February 2005 04:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Had some green tea just now. Mm! :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 28 February 2005 04:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Green tea is more highly caffeine rich than black tea.

Ed (dali), Monday, 28 February 2005 06:49 (twenty-one years ago)

My friends live right near chinatown in chicago so they hook me up with some nice stuff - i really like the oolong and ti kuan yin teas in particular. You can get a little pot for like 4-5 bucks ("possessing the high temperature keeping power") and you just put the leaves into the netting on top and fill it w/ boiling water and voila. The tea comes in all different kinds of price ranges too, which is neat - you can start at the bottom and i guess the high up the mountain you get, the more expensive the tea. I have a cheap selection of oolong right now, Tung Ting Oolong Tea which is from (obviously) the Tung Ting mountains at "2400 feet where fog and cloudy mists hover every morning and late afternoon. When brewed, it produces a golden yellow hue, a flowery fragrance and a fresh taste."

yes, quite delicious.

No tea I've ever tasted has surpassed the broken orange pekoe fannings my parents brought me from Sri Lanka. I get bop from Whittards now, but it's dustier. I only drink green tea when I can't think what else to drink. Maybe I should try it more.

Madchen (Madchen), Monday, 28 February 2005 16:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Alvita teas from Twinlab (as in, the vitamin company) are pretty good. I'm drinking the green tea with lime right now and it's decent.

i'm really into gunpowder green tea & dragonwell.
as for black teas, i've been into a lot of mate lately, so i've been cutting back. i do like twinings prince of wales tea. or did. i haven't had it in years. argo tea seems to make some nice varieties of tea, it's kinda fancy, though. celestial seasonings makes a tea called "morning thunder" that is a mix of black tea & mate...quite tasty!

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 16:59 (twenty-one years ago)

i really love dragon pearl. i have to go down to chinatown to get it and feel like im doing something illegal.
they hand roll the tea leaves into tiny pearls and dry them in jasmine petals. it costs sort of a lot $25 for about 7 pots worth but i still buy it.
also, green tea in a can is tasty.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 21:25 (twenty years ago)

I found that you can easily make green tea way too strong, and that can be offputting - I threw a huge spoonful into my teapot one time and it was terribly bitter. It seems to only need a few leaves; at least, thats how I like my green tea, very clear and fresh and not boilingly hot. Green/jasmine blend is nice too, the jasmine takes a bit of the edge off.

Great after-meal digestif.

nine years pass...

gave up coffee earlier this year after thirty-six years or so of daily, greatly-loved overindulgence - replaced it with tea, and some months later I'm having one of those extended middle-aged moments where I'm just immensely satisfied by a personal decision that's of no consequence to anybody else. how lovely tea is! how varied! how ready to subtly alter the primary colors of your day! there were several tea threads but as I'm drinking a green tea with jasmine flowers this morning I picked this one, however from another thread please enjoy this poem.

Snow Water

A fastidious brewer of tea, a tea
Connoisseur as well as a poet,
I modestly request on my sixtieth
Birthday a gift of snow water.

Tea steam and ink stains. Single-
Mindedly I scald my tea pot and
Measure out some Silver Needles Tea,
Enough for a second steeping.

Other favourites include Clear
Distance and Eyebrows of Longevity
Or, from precarious mountain peaks,
Cloud Mist Tea (quite delectable)

Which competent monkeys harvest
Filling their baskets with choice leaves
And bringing them down to where I wait
With my crock of snow water.

- Michael Longley

I applaud the fact that you managed to quit coffee altogether, not in the least because the mere concept of doing so breaks my brain.

lbi's life of limitless european glamour (Le Bateau Ivre), Tuesday, 2 October 2018 12:33 (seven years ago)

it wasn't super hard, which was surprising to me - Mrs. Crawford & I used to drink a pot after dinner nightly - I just cut it down to a morning cup at first, and then eliminated that - I didn't resolve to quit, I just had tea instead one morning. It was unsatisfying at first! and then as the new habit established itself it became like a new hobby, all sorts of new things about it to learn! also, in the age of the internet, exploring many different kinds of tea from all over the world is easy - the collector/trainspotter itch is scratched real nice by something like "oh, here's the second harvest of this particular green tea," etc
