She is now the only person who has (in separate years) won an Oscar for Best Actress and a Razzie for Worst Actress -- and in both cases accepted them personally.

Razzie report via BBC

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 27 February 2005 07:39 (twenty-one years ago)

It's pretty cool that she accepted it in person.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Sunday, 27 February 2005 08:31 (twenty-one years ago)

She's redeemed herself in my eyes. I think I will cast her on my next film.

Alan Smithee, Sunday, 27 February 2005 10:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Best anon. post evah.

Ken L (Ken L), Sunday, 27 February 2005 10:39 (twenty-one years ago)

A few years ago, Tom Green accepted his Razzie in person (for Freddy Got Fingered). So, I guess Tom needs to work on getting an Oscar, now.

Ernest P. (ernestp), Monday, 28 February 2005 04:57 (twenty-one years ago)

He's too busy posting videos of his dogs on his blog and recording his album with Mike Simpson of the Dust Brothers.

No, really.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Monday, 28 February 2005 05:00 (twenty-one years ago)

OMG. So THIS is where I heard about this event happening.... Ha, for some reason I thought I read something about it somewhere. Well, I mean, I did end up reading about it "somewhere" (i.e. this BBC News link), but, um, it was ILX-ish in origin. Damn. I feel bewildered. (Anyway, thanks for providing us with linkage about this event, Ned!)

Surreal Addiction (Dee the Lurker), Monday, 28 February 2005 05:10 (twenty-one years ago)

My god is she attractive. My god.

David Allen (David Allen), Monday, 28 February 2005 19:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I like that she accepted the award. Now if only she picked some decent films to act in.

Leon the Fatboy (Ex Leon), Monday, 28 February 2005 19:55 (twenty-one years ago)

it's weird how the BBC quote implies that she's calling Lambert Wilson and Sharon Stone "bad actors," I doubt that's what she was saying!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 28 February 2005 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

the made-for-tv movies she's been doing are way better than the theatrical crap she's ended up with. tv lets her be pretty and meleodramatic, while the film industry seems to want to punish her.

The Argunaut (sexyDancer), Monday, 28 February 2005 20:09 (twenty-one years ago)

She wants to punish X-Men fans with her accent, so it all works out.

Leon the Fatboy (Ex Leon), Monday, 28 February 2005 20:10 (twenty-one years ago)

x men fans, an abused lot. it seems as if there is a govt conspiracy against themm.

The Argunaut (sexyDancer), Monday, 28 February 2005 20:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I would like to bestow upon her the "ROWR" award, as well.

Je4nne ƒury (Jeanne Fury), Monday, 28 February 2005 20:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I like the sound of that ceremony

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 28 February 2005 20:41 (twenty-one years ago)

She's also very good because she got away with hit and run by making up a ridiculous lie that she doesn't remember what she's doing when she's driving!

hater of liars, Monday, 28 February 2005 21:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Dude, who does?

Leon the Fatboy (Ex Leon), Monday, 28 February 2005 21:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I admit I'd be less sanguine if the other person had died.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 28 February 2005 21:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought her hair looked bad last night.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 28 February 2005 21:10 (twenty-one years ago)

It just strikes me as funny, going anon to denounce Halle Berry. It's like hiring a mercenary to take out an annoying Care Bear.

x-post

Ken L (Ken L), Monday, 28 February 2005 21:39 (twenty-one years ago)

she always seems nervous, somehow

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Monday, 28 February 2005 22:05 (twenty-one years ago)

This is because she is terrified that everyone will realize that she can't act.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 28 February 2005 22:07 (twenty-one years ago)

She can act! She is playing the beautiful but insecure girl, who thinks everybody is only into her for her looks and not helping her develop her other talents.

Ken L (Ken L), Monday, 28 February 2005 22:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Her hair looked amazing at the Oscars. She's a better than average actress. I'm actually very much looking forward to Their Eyes Were Watching God.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 28 February 2005 22:41 (twenty-one years ago)

It looks a little too Lifetime channel for me, but if there's nothing else on I may watch.

Leon the Fatboy (Ex Leon), Monday, 28 February 2005 22:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I've not read the book though heard about it for a while now -- is its reputation deserved?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 28 February 2005 22:44 (twenty-one years ago)

publicly enduring the indignation of Billy Bob fucking you in the ass = guaranteed Oscar.

she couldn't act her way out of a wet paper bag (and "Monster's Ball" in general was a horrible lump of Hollywood-patting-itself-on-the-back-we-LOVE-BLACK-PEOPLE! bullshit)

Kingfish MuffMiner 2049er (Kingfish), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 02:42 (twenty-one years ago)

she doesn't choose interesting projects. if she had a few daring projects under her belt, i guess one could excuse the rest of it as slumming (à la de niro). but i don't think she has. daring projects under her belt, that is.

i don't know if she's a good actress. she has that problem of seemingly excessive self-regard which also plagues tom cruise.

i don't know that i've really seen her in much save for 'monsters ball' and 'x-men'.... i guess i saw part of that dorothy dandridge movie. i don't remember her performance nearly as much as the guy who impersonated otto preminger!!

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 02:46 (twenty-one years ago)

didn't she hit someone, with her car, and drive away?

oh, I see someone else, already, said it.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 02:47 (twenty-one years ago)

is its reputation deserved?

it's interesting in that it escaped a lot of expectations of a 'black novel' for its time, and there are some evocative passages i still remember... but it seems to me like one of those novels whose reputation is greater among high school english teachers than anyone else.*

* see also arthur miller

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 02:48 (twenty-one years ago)

of course one could also say that of "my antonia," which is in fact the greatest novel ever.*

* well one of them.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 02:48 (twenty-one years ago)

seven months pass...
Somehow I had forgotten about this picture:

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 19:22 (twenty years ago)

eight years pass...

About 15 minutes after I finished Gothika--some of it through splayed fingers, I'll admit, fish in a barrel with me--I realized that the most basic plot points weren't really clear. When I checked a couple of places online, they weren't any clearer. Everyone was confused.
