Blimey. That had everything. I was pretty much neutral but felt so sorry for Gerrard. He looked like his mum had just died.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 27 February 2005 18:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I only saw the extra time but that was exciting in itself. What happened with Mourinho then?

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 27 February 2005 18:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I quite liked the darkness at the end.

Gerrard doesn't care, he'll be playing for that team next season. First ever player to score for his new club both he's even signed for them?

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Sunday, 27 February 2005 18:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I quite liked the darkness at the end.

I believe in a thing called red cards?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 27 February 2005 18:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Mourinho was clearly making a 'ssssssh' gesture right in front of the Liverpool fans after the equaliser. He was also getting a bit lairy with Jamie Carragher earlier on.

Best bit of the match = Jerzy Dudek fumbling the ball when there were no other players in the area.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 27 February 2005 18:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, the League Cup never used to have darkness and spotlights and fireworks at the end, did it?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 27 February 2005 18:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think i've ever seen such a lacklustre and passionless display from Gerrard ever.

Andy Jay, Sunday, 27 February 2005 18:40 (twenty-one years ago)

well after the 'pool made it 2:3 i nearly got my hopes up, a little, for a shortish while

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Sunday, 27 February 2005 19:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I got really into it during extra time (I had been watching the Celtic game in the house, and ran across the road to the pub when I realised the Carling Cup game was going into extra time), and I actually wanted Liverpool to score, just to make for extra excitement - this was without seeing the whole game, which I wish I had.

I'm not sure I like the roof on the Millenium Stadium, cup finals should be played outdoors (I had this grumble at the FA Cup final a couple of years back) but fireworks = cool

Jerzy Dudek fumbling the ball = comedy GOLD. Like Roy Carroll and Rab Douglas with added clumsiness.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 27 February 2005 19:19 (twenty-one years ago)

"Wait, no cocaine?"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 27 February 2005 19:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Mourinho was sent off for pressing his finger to his lips after Chelsea's equaliser, but he said the gesture was not aimed at Liverpool fans.

"The signal of close your mouth was not for them but for the press," he said.

"They speak too much and in my opinion they try to do everything to disturb Chelsea. Wait, don't speak too soon."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 27 February 2005 19:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Chris and Vicky watched this several hours after the event, Likely Lads style, in Porto of all places. Message from the disgruntled man himself is "I'm off on the rampage, watch the news".

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 28 February 2005 07:54 (twenty-one years ago)

What was the deal with Mourinho only being allowed out w/ his solicitor? I assume this is dealt with in the papers but I haven't read them

DJ Mencap0))), Monday, 28 February 2005 10:48 (twenty-one years ago)

didn't like the roof at all. i had been quite excited about it before the game but it was like being in a giant B&Q. no natural light and it made the grass look funny. yuk.

great game though.

the fireworks bit and exploding tinsel was brilliant. i think next year they should have a foam party.

one steven gerrard!

Pete W (peterw), Monday, 28 February 2005 10:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Hahaha, I can't believe Vicky is in Porto. I hope she is diving all over the place in a retribution-type stylee and claiming penalties...

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 28 February 2005 21:15 (twenty-one years ago)

ohmigod i am drunk. i meant to delete that instead of posting it...

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 28 February 2005 21:16 (twenty-one years ago)

lol! We actually went to watch boavista, and I can report back that it is not just a Porto thing - the diving and rolling about from bot sides was just ridiculous, and the quality of the football was absolutely appauling. It will definitely be blogged on tmfd, once it's back up and running

Vicky (Vicky), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 11:04 (twenty-one years ago)

we missed it, but if i had watched it it would've been rubbish so it's me you all ought to thank really.

GET ONE BEST CARLING CUP SEMI FINAL EVER!

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 22:27 (twenty years ago)

That was fantastic. Two of my most-loved friends are Arsenal fans, but I was thrilled at Wigan winning it, with an ex-Bristol Rovers star scoring the 120th minute winner! So if Man U win tomorrow, Wigan are all but guaranteed a place in Europe.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 22:35 (twenty years ago)

That was incredible. A great game anyway, even before the last gasp winner.

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 22:37 (twenty years ago)

I missed this :(

Say what you like about the Premiership this season, at least its given us the seemingly unstoppable rise of Wigan.

They're going to beat Manyoo in the final, aren't they?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 22:50 (twenty years ago)

xpost to Martin re UEFA Cup - unfortunately not. Only the winners can go into Europe via the Carling Cup - if the Mancs win and gain a European place from their league position, then the extra spot goes to the Premiership.

I think this was a condition of England retaining its (unique) UEFA Cup place for the Carling Cup.

(see 2000/01, where Liverpool beat Birmingham in the final, but as Lpool got a Champions League spot, Ipswich qualified for the UEFA Cup in 5th place in the Premiership.)

Si.C@rter (SiC@rter), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 22:52 (twenty years ago)

i would have been happy for wigan to win this match anyway but was extra happy because SAME OLD ARSENAL, ALWAYS CHEATING! JESUS.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 23:03 (twenty years ago)

if the Mancs win and gain a European place from their league position, then the extra spot goes to the Premiership.

But it's quite possible that this could go to Wigan or Blackburn anyway as I think both will be seriously challenging Bolton for a UEFA Cup place in the league table itself.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 23:09 (twenty years ago)

Ah, you're right Si - I had forgotten that. Steve's right too - and of course we don't know who will win this, nor who will finish where in the Prem - it's clearly perfectly possible that Wigan could earn a Champions' League spot, and ditto for Blackburn who have been climbing the table steadily, let alone a UEFA place.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 23:15 (twenty years ago)

SAME OLD ARSENAL, ALWAYS CHEATING! JESUS.

One dive in particular from Reyes towards the end was astounding. He forgot to dive when the player was near him, waited til they were about ten yards apart and then threw himself down on the ground.

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 23:29 (twenty years ago)

Especially as the extra UEFA place would be 6th these days - in 2001 England only had three Champions League places as opposed to four now.

Si.C@rter (SiC@rter), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 23:29 (twenty years ago)

Let's anticipate the next BEST CARLING CUP FINAL EVER (maybe). Will it be worth watching? Can plucky wee Wigan defeat a shaky Man U?

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 26 February 2006 11:32 (twenty years ago)

Wigan will charge straight through Man Utd's four-winged-wonder midfield and win 2-1. Possibly including a comedy own-goal from, ooooh, Kieran Richardson.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 26 February 2006 12:18 (twenty years ago)

I think I'm almost decided on pub now. This had better be good, I'm still kicking myself for not seeing last year's (though the extra-time itself was good enough).

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 26 February 2006 12:20 (twenty years ago)

Is it only on Sky? Pah. I'll have to go the pub AGAIN.

Ranking Rupert (Ranking Rupert), Sunday, 26 February 2006 12:23 (twenty years ago)

man u have no chance. jason roberts is back

ken c (ken c), Sunday, 26 February 2006 12:24 (twenty years ago)

United always seem to lose the Milk/Rumbelows/Worthington/Littlewoods/whatever cup final. If they field four wingers again I can't see them winning, but I don't know what the alternative is as every who could play as a ball-winning central midfielder is either injured or has been sold. Maybe 4-3-3 with Ferdinand in midfield and Saha-Ruud-Rooney up front?

Tehrannosaurus HoBB (the pirate king), Sunday, 26 February 2006 12:29 (twenty years ago)

("every" = "everyone")

Tehrannosaurus HoBB (the pirate king), Sunday, 26 February 2006 12:29 (twenty years ago)

That formation could be quite tasty except you'd be relying on a rock solid Vidic/Brown defensive pairing.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 26 February 2006 12:33 (twenty years ago)

Fucking hell, United are really shit aren't they? How did a manager like Ferguson possibly manage to let his squad become this unbalanced?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 26 February 2006 12:35 (twenty years ago)

Selling Phil Neville and Nicky Butt look like pretty stupid moves now. And selling one of Beckham and Veron would have been OK, but not both at the same time.

Tehrannosaurus HoBB (the pirate king), Sunday, 26 February 2006 12:39 (twenty years ago)

Fletcher's not a winger.

Okay, he's not a ballwinner either.

Cousin yogurt beard (nordicskilla), Sunday, 26 February 2006 12:41 (twenty years ago)

he's a fanny

ken c (ken c), Sunday, 26 February 2006 12:53 (twenty years ago)

Oi! That's the great hope of the Scotland international team you're talking about there.

Oh, who am I kidding. He's crap.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 26 February 2006 12:56 (twenty years ago)

What is he supposed to be for? I've never been entirely clear.

I have no idea how this one will go, but I'll be supporting Wigan - who is there who won't be, outside committed Man U fans?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 26 February 2006 13:25 (twenty years ago)

there'll probably be some who will support neither, i'd imagine

ken c (ken c), Sunday, 26 February 2006 13:29 (twenty years ago)

I doubt it - it's not like anybody has a reason to dislike Wigan, and it's not like many people need a reason to want United to lose.

Tehrannosaurus HoBB (the pirate king), Sunday, 26 February 2006 13:49 (twenty years ago)

Van Nistelroy dropped. Giggs playing centre-mid. Alex Ferguson = mental.

Mike W (caek), Sunday, 26 February 2006 14:14 (twenty years ago)

giggs is great though

ken c (ken c), Sunday, 26 February 2006 14:27 (twenty years ago)

and louis saha is like top scorer in the league cup innit

ken c (ken c), Sunday, 26 February 2006 14:29 (twenty years ago)

Both are true, but Giggs and O'Shea are going to get kicked off the park by Wigan's midfield, and surely, surely you've got to find a place for VN if he's fit?

Mike W (caek), Sunday, 26 February 2006 14:33 (twenty years ago)

They just said that the bookies are giving 5-1 for Wigan to win. That seems insanely generous.

Tehrannosaurus HoBB (the pirate king), Sunday, 26 February 2006 14:55 (twenty years ago)

I WILL PLACE A BET.

Mike W (caek), Sunday, 26 February 2006 14:58 (twenty years ago)

Hurrah. How stressful was that? Excellent interview with Ramos just then.

Nasty, Brutish & Short, Sunday, 24 February 2008 17:43 (eighteen years ago)

ken c, Sunday, 24 February 2008 17:44 (eighteen years ago)

darraghmac, Sunday, 24 February 2008 20:33 (eighteen years ago)

Frogman Henry, Sunday, 24 February 2008 20:40 (eighteen years ago)

give him a while yet.

darraghmac, Sunday, 24 February 2008 20:51 (eighteen years ago)

The last ten minutes of that game were possibly the worst of my football-watching life, including all England games. The four hours of drinking that followed were more enjoyable, must be said.

I don't think there's anyone who watched who can claim Spurs didn't deserve that. Also, eight goals past Arsenal and Chelsea in one competition is a nice little detail. I would happily stick with a manager who won us a cup a season, fuck the Champions League.

On the other hand, I *hate* Didier Zokora.

Matt DC, Sunday, 24 February 2008 22:57 (eighteen years ago)

i thought zokora was good today for most of the game (um, giving away that needless free kick, and his miss one-on-one aside)- and his reaction to the penalty was a joy to watch.

robinson, on the other hand, had another nervy, troubled game.

darraghmac, Sunday, 24 February 2008 23:03 (eighteen years ago)

That was a dreadful game of football. We gave the ball to Spurs, they kicked it into touch. That said, Spurs totally deserved to win, but I really wish I hadn't been there to see it.

Grant out.

Pete W, Monday, 25 February 2008 10:07 (eighteen years ago)

I liked the throw-in argument between Drogba and Tainio.

jel --, Monday, 25 February 2008 17:45 (eighteen years ago)

That was some quality PC Plod finger-wagging from Drogba.

I'm actually watching it now, it seems to be mostly Aaron Lennon vs Man Utd.

Henry Frog (Frogman Henry), Sunday, 1 March 2009 18:47 (seventeen years ago)

that was a much, much better performance than i had expected. happy enough with that, i think most of our players played well above their norms. lennon's continued improvement is really unexpected and a total bonus.

fuck david bentley, tho. he won't lose any sleep over that tonight, the lazy prick.

Anthony, I am not an Alcoholic & Drunk (darraghmac), Sunday, 1 March 2009 20:37 (seventeen years ago)

David Bentley's £15m transfer to Man City is the most eagerly-awaited roffle of the summer. I hope Hughes keeps his job.

Otherwise, meh. This whole game really brought the whole Spurs problem into focus, which is that everyone has been talking bollocks about the (pretty good) defence, and the real issue is that we have THE WORST FINAL BALL IN THE PREMIERSHIP. Seriously, no attacking threat whatsoever.

Also, I take back what I said previously about Darren Bent. He has no footballing brain at all.

Roque Santa Gold (Matt DC), Sunday, 1 March 2009 21:26 (seventeen years ago)

if i upbraid matt_dc on hasty negative footballing judgments the internet may break, so i'll just hum away to myself here.

Anthony, I am not an Alcoholic & Drunk (darraghmac), Sunday, 1 March 2009 21:29 (seventeen years ago)

Dimitar Berbatov may have a thing or two to say about that.

Roque Santa Gold (Matt DC), Sunday, 1 March 2009 21:52 (seventeen years ago)

And going by last night's MOTD, Liverpool might have something to say about the 'worst final ball' slur

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 1 March 2009 21:56 (seventeen years ago)

i felt uneasy about even including teddy, as a dude that was half striker, half in-the-hole player.

including a definite striker like berbatov, nah. final ball is the job of the guys behind the fwd line.
