Surprised by Cracking Knuckles

do you know, a couple of months ago, I suddenly started to be able to crack my knucles in an incredibly satisfying way. they make really loud pops and cracks! i had never previously been able to do this.

now wtf is up with this - do i have arthritis? are my bones in distress? is it the weather? i'm not really complaining - giving the knuckles a good crack has become an enjoyable part of my daily routine. still, it's curious.

Stop doing this now! I've been doing this as long as I can remember and it's done my fingers no deal of good. The more you do it the easier it is to do it so now I only have to move my hand in a certain way and it cracks my knuckles.

Maybe you weren't doing it right before?

I've been cracking knuckles (and spines, necks, toes, etc.) since 5th grade, and I'm still mostly okay.

but dog latin, why do you keep doing it? it's fun right?

Ugh! Ugh! ugh!!!! Soon you will get to the point where cracking your knuckles is no longer good enough for you, and soon you will be making kinky demands that other people even PULL your knuckles for you in order to make them snap better.

I can only crack one knuckle (joint?) in my right hand. I've always wanted to be able to crack my knuckles and say "I'm gunna kick yer filthy ass" but I just look like wimp with my sissy singular snap! Lucky for me I got a nice biker doo-rag with flaming skulls all over it.

stephen morris (stephen morris), Monday, 28 February 2005 15:05 (twenty-one years ago)

My knuckles used to crack really loud & nasty. Now they don't hardly crack at all. Whyzat? Anyway, I did it for years and I never got arthritis. I think that's an old wives' tale.

So crack away. Crack like the wind!

dave225 (Dave225), Monday, 28 February 2005 15:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Hi Pete! stop doing it. it serves no perpose and puts unnesasery stress on your joints.

lukey (Lukey G), Monday, 28 February 2005 15:09 (twenty-one years ago)

or else refine it so that you can do a fullbody body-poppin wave which cracks EVERY SINGLE JOINT in yr body one after the other!!

mark s (mark s), Monday, 28 February 2005 15:14 (twenty-one years ago)

In case you're wondering what the noise is, it's the formation of bubbles of nitrogen in the spaces between your joints - when you pull the bone, it creates a vacuum and the nitrogen comes out of solution on a very small level but very quickly.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 28 February 2005 15:16 (twenty-one years ago)

it serves no perpose

It feels nice.

It's a great way to relieve tension. It's the working man's yoga!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 28 February 2005 15:27 (twenty-one years ago)

No, Mark S not OTM. Joe used to actually do something like this - it was part of his morning ritual to crack every joint in his body in turn. God, it was disgusting to hear.

thanks markelby, i was vaguely wondering that.

I agree with Ken L.

But kate, this guy has just cracked every joint in his body and he's giving the thumbs-up!?

i know a girl who can do the neck cracking thing. it's kind of cool and it made me jump a lot whenever it happens!

ken c (ken c), Monday, 28 February 2005 16:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I can crack my neck too! And kate will hate it...because I do!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 28 February 2005 16:12 (twenty-one years ago)

two years pass...

i'm getting nervous about it. i've been cracking my knuckles for years and now i'm worried... my fingers are kind of shaped differently, like from one hand to the other. some of the tips bend and i just feel weird
