The Jacket (Adrien Brody, et al)

I got to see this tonight:

i expected it to be utterly useless, but as it ends up it wasn't all that bad. the acting was all right, Adrien Brody is compelling and Keira Knightley almost made me forget she's not from the U.S. the atmosphere was great, as was the sound/score. original music by Brian Eno - i haven't heard anything he's done in the past 20 years, but some of it sounded vaguely Do Make Say Think-ish (only one part though).

the script was such shit though! it started off all fun and disorienting but just got really silly around 30-45 minutes in. i swear to god, i haven't heard as many people stifling laughter in a movie theater ever...

the trailer was ok!

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 03:27 (twenty years ago)

is the eno music being released?

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 03:36 (twenty years ago)

I loved it. Basically, it was Eternal Sunshine of the Etc except it didn't suck, lie and jerk off it's mast of cleverness all over you.

iang, Tuesday, 1 March 2005 06:28 (twenty years ago)

i love how this is Brody's karmic payback for being the guy burying someone alive in 'Oxygen'

i didn't even recognise Knightley in the trailer. the premise of the film seems absurd but still terrifies me.

This movie was appallingly bad. Seriously.

The Yellow Kid, Tuesday, 1 March 2005 20:20 (twenty years ago)

Well, it does have Adrien Brody in it -- that's usually a sign.

Leon the Fatboy (Ex Leon), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 20:25 (twenty years ago)

I liked Adrien Brody in King of the Hill (the Soderbergh movie) and Summer of Sam. Still haven't seen The Pianist, but I think he's worthwhile.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 20:28 (twenty years ago)

I like all of the movies you've listed, but he's done a lot of garbage lately.

Leon the Fatboy (Ex Leon), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 20:30 (twenty years ago)

The only jacket that matters.

well if you like the idea of Adrien Brody suffering repeated head trauma, this movie is for you.

or maybe it isn't ...

lemin (lemin), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 20:57 (twenty years ago)

Jared Leto is somewhere sobbing "This part was WRITTEN for me!!!!"

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 21:07 (twenty years ago)

but Jared Leto only usually gets shot/beaten/axe-murdered once a movie

lemin (lemin), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 21:10 (twenty years ago)

Or have Farrellsex, which is infinitely worse.

Leon the Fatboy (Ex Leon), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 21:11 (twenty years ago)

poor Andrew

Sven Bastard (blueski), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 22:27 (twenty years ago)

It truly may be the defintive Adrian Brody repeat head trauma film, no doubt.

Keira as a semi-goth by-way-of-Liza-Mineeli's-mascara adds even more value.

Together it spells entertainment.

Exactly! This movie would have taken him to the next level.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 3 March 2005 13:13 (twenty years ago)

Doesn't this also have Fish-out-of-Marillion in it?

Huey (Huey), Thursday, 3 March 2005 13:17 (twenty years ago)

three months pass...
i want to see this. on newsnight review (middlebrow UK 'arts magazine' programme) germaine greer offered her assessment: she was looking forward to lots of brody nudity, but -- quell fucking swizz -- he stayed clothed, mostly! greer is an icon.

N_Rq, Monday, 6 June 2005 14:43 (twenty years ago)

did ANYONE see this?

four weeks pass...
I don't get it.
Did he die the first time, and the whole movie after the point where he blinks in the field hospital just the firing of synapses that comes with death?
Because, as a time travel movie, it wasn't even trying.
And, what the fuck?
It's like the writers got all their info on the mental health system from One Flew Over..., and what kind of lawyer did Brody have? Didn't anybody think to run tests on his hands (or gloves) to see if he'd fired a gun?
I could have successfully defended Brody on the cop killer rap.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 4 July 2005 13:47 (nineteen years ago)

Keira Knightly does a good Helena Bonham-Carter impersonation.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Sunday, 17 July 2005 05:06 (nineteen years ago)

two years pass...
