so who indulges this obscene and decadent western luxury (i worked out long ago if i had it, i wd never get OUT of bed)?

mark s, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i have never had tv in the bedroom. wouldn't want it either

gareth, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

actually for a short while i *did* have an old TV in my bedroom, TURNED ON ITS SIDE SO I COULD VIEW IT W/O SITTING UP HURRAH!

Eventually it caught fire. This is TRUE!

mark s, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I gave my living room TV to Isabel so she would have one in her bedroom. But she uses it for the Playstation anyway.

Tom, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Me. I sometimes try to watch Match of the Day on it, but it's quite a small TV and about 10 feet away, so it's always dissatisfying. When I can even tell which teams are playing.

I don't see it as decadent, more an integral part of my sanctuary, along with the computer, my books and my CDs. All I need is a pizza, a glass of wine and, later, a hot chocolate, and I'm in cosy heaven.

Mark C, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I do, and am often found jawdropping at Screenshop in the middle of the night ...

Robin Carmody, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

mmm... obscene and decadent. Guilty, yr honour.

Will, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Mark S, that's v. decadent.

I have one but it doesn't have a cable box so we just use it to watch videos.

Samantha, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

how else can we view inspiring pornography.

anthony, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Not in the bedroom. Actually, reading this thread made me really conscious that since we moved into our current house 18 mths ago, activities have become predominantly rooted in particular rooms. TV in the living room; music and computering in the 'dining' room; radio in the kitchen; reading in the bedroom. (Showering in the bathroom, and sex in the car outside, obv.).

Ellie, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Tv, video, full set of separates and a playstation all in my tiny box of a bedroom. Lovely.

chris, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have to have my telly in the bedroom to get away from flatmate spending huge swathes of his empty life watching cricket and football so I can spend huge swathes of my empty life watching soap omnibuses at the weekend.

However the remote control is bust so no teletext in bed and no automatically-off-in-30 minutes function to lull me to sleep.

Emma, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

For the past 3 years, I've lived in studio apartments, so it's not like the TV was in the bedroom, there just was only one room, so the TV went in there. When I had cable, it was dangerous as fuck. Without cable, it's not nearly as addictive.

When I was a teenager, I had a TV in my room. That was ace, I've never quite recreated the comfort of it. But I'm one of those people who seldom actually *just* watches TV without drawing or writing or playing guitar or something at the same, so hence why I like to do it in comfort.

Should I get a TV for my new flat? I don't think I'm going to. I think I'm going to be odd and live again with internet but no TV. That's how I like it best.

kate, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i also have a studio but i am foregoing the tv because if i had one i'd just watch it all day like i do when i'm at joe's place. so i, like kate, have the internet instead. which is just as time-suckingly wasteful.

maura, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

except for watching films in bed with a loved one, too dangerous for me. TV is far too addictive.

Ed, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

TV video combo thing! It's nice to sit on me bed and listen to my walkman, whilst rubbish shows provide the images!

james, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, but I can pretend that the internet is a tool for, oh, communication, and erm... edification, and erm... well, something positive, rather than just a total time-waste. Maybe I should just go back to watching Time Team marathons or something.

kate, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh yes, the Philips portable has been a bedroom fixture for a couple of years now. How can I sleep without first reading Ceefax viewers' letters on p145?

Have you noticed how they always end with a question?

MJ, SE London.

Michael Jones, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have TV in my bedroom but can't be arsed to change the plugs around much because my hi-fi thing takes them all up! don't care, though, there's mostly just a load of shit on anyway, and I'll probably just give up watching it altogether soon plus when I move out I can't be bothered to pay the license fee.

Bill, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

There is no greater cure for insomnia than a TV in the bedroom. I find it almosty next to impossible to watch any TV lying down - its as if I have a spirit level wired up in my head to the "SLEEP" button.

That said for Playstation and sitting up in bed antics (I have a double bed with extra backing matress to make the deepest and most literal matress in the world) it carnt be beat.

My bedroom TV is about 25 years old too (but then, as I have moaned before, almost every item of entertainment equipment in the house is mine).

Pete, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dude, I live in an 8x12 foot room and I have two tvs, one of which is at the foot of my bed.

Kris, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Looks like I'm in the minority here, but I hate having a TV in the bedroom. My sister turned into an antisocial arse when she bought herself a TV - she never, ever came out of her room, ate all her meals upstairs and only descended to the ground floor in order to go out with her mates. She is also unable to sleep without the telly on, the freak. Do you sense bitter resentment here?

Madchen, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the night diana died i found out and was watching the news unscroll by c.3.30 in the morning, courtesy [p]'s bonkers stalkerwomen [j], who ALWAYS "slept" with the TV on; [j] was "woken" by breaking news (i guess), and rang [p] who was for once not ratty with her. However she did hustle [j] off the phone to ring me. So we watched TV for an hour and talked abt it on the phone.

As if sleeping w.TV on isn't proof enough, here's how truly hyperbonkers [j] is, or anyway was: she "met" a man on the net, in a porn-heavy chatroom, flew out to Virginia to MARRY him, there to discover he was a creepy twat (incredible!) w.a wife and no fortune after all, punched him [she's MASSIVE], got thrown out of his house w/o money or luggage, and had to borrow to be flown back to the UK. Thus all who sleep wiv TV on = [j] or worse QED.

mark s, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sorry folks I have the old monitor here in my room. I watch TV in the living room. :) Gale

Gale Deslongchamps, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No TV in room. Only one TV in the house, so I can't hog it. There's nothing good on anyway but Saturday Night Live, which I read while talking on instant messenger or writing or playing guitar or something because it's not THAT good (i.e. what kate said).

Maria, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hi Kris:) That's a goodsized room for one person. When I started out= when the kiddies were young, my whole house was 16 ft. by 22 ft.=4 kiddies 2 grownups. Not much space but we made it.... Gale

Gale Deslongchamps, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hi Gale...I'm not complaining! I just have too much junk so it always looks like a mess even when it's clean.

Kris, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

since I live in a hellhole this university calls a "single" I thought that I would always watch TV (it's 4 feet away from the bed) instead of keeping up in school. aside from buffy and the schools movie channel I never watch it...instead I spend 4 hours a day on the computer ;)

kevin enas, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Initially I thought, "Well, I don't have that set-up." Then I remembered that I've had a TV in whatever bedroom I've lived in since 1992. I *told* you I don't watch TV! It's a video monitor these days.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have a TV (with cable - apparently it's cheaper here than in England) in my bedroom. Lately I haven't switched it on much. Actually I watch DVDs (on my laptop in bed) more than telly.

helen fordsdale, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Pete you do NOT own all the entertainment equipment in the house as the blender you use to make daft cocktails is MINE and the video is 75% bust and I rarely get to watch the tv downstairs as someone else is always watching something that isn't a soap on it.

Emma, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Pretty much all my life I've had a tv in my room (particularly when at uni or sharing a flat, cos my room was the only place I had to put one) but since getting my own place I've banished everything but a bed and a lamp from my bedroom. Computer/tv/hifi/whatever all in the living room.

If I'm in my bedroom it's for one of two reasons, one of which is sleeping, and the other ain't watching bloody TV!

ogden, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

and the other ain't watching bloody TV!

what, hoovering?

gareth, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Question ILE: Does a blender = entertainment equipment.

If so then I apologise. And even if the video is not very reliable, it doesn't stop my ownership of said device.

Pete, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Depends what you put in it, surely? Water >> tomatoes >> kittens... It's a continuum!!

mark s, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well given that you have lured several people back to ours to make them maggot filled raspberry martinis I would say it is. They wouldn't have bothered otherwise, it's not like they came for the tv or video now is it?

Emma, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I came because I am a homeless tramp and needed a sofa. Is the sofa an entertainment item?

Tom, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It's had its moments. Heh heh heh.

Emma, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

luvvit, only for a while my tv was the only one in the flat so everyone snuggled up in my bed to watch.

Menelaus Darcy, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I live in the sitting room. Or, my bedroom is a sitting room. So the TV is in there. I usually watch it when I am in sitting room mode, not bed room mode, if you see. That's because there's no remote and the bed is the other side of the room. I am however, going to buy a video player today. I imagine this will enhance my life no end. I only have one video though - Sonic Youth in '1991 The Year That Punk Broke'. Nice. Bedroom as sitting room is annoying. Certain flatmates who are not on this board tend to invite themselves in whenever they feel like it, ie LAST NITE WHEN I WAS GOING TO BED. 'Look, I am in my dressing gown I am not wanting to watch TV and talk to you' (I thought). Hmm. Need more sleep.

alix, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have a tv in my bedroom but I never watch it. I can think of only 2 times in 9 months when it's been on.

surm, Thursday, 28 May 2015 04:47 (ten years ago)

except for a few months back in the 90s, i have never had a tv in the bedroom. it is one of those things that never occurs to me, like valet parking or wearing nail polish.
