I dunno if calling it "the Alabama of Britain" since this sort of thing doesn't happen in Alabama anymore.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 17:36 (twenty years ago)

more on this "tradition" here:

The man who created the controversial "Mississippi of the North" headline five years ago has himself looked at this wide and sometimes bleak landscape and seen something different emerging on the horizon.

Eric Howe, a U.S.-born-and-educated economist who has spent the past quarter century at the University of Saskatchewan, still feels that the province has enormous social challenges, in particular, a mushrooming aboriginal population that should form the majority well before the midpoint of this century. But he also feels that this 2004 economic upswing is no momentary blip.

there's snuff films and child pornography out there, honestly, since when do we have time to worry about this ridiculous shit?

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 1 March 2005 19:05 (twenty years ago)

no one has ever proven the existence of a snuff film, to my knowledge.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 19:09 (twenty years ago)

When did your knowledge become the Gold Standard of existence?

Huk-L, Tuesday, 1 March 2005 19:10 (twenty years ago)

Huk don't be mad that hstencil is stealing your bit by posting wacky news stories. Share the lameness, bro!

green uno skip card (ex machina), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 19:16 (twenty years ago)

haha deaner, you wimp. you and huck are both afraid to show up!

no, seriously, there's never been actual proof of a snuff film ever being made.

and this isn't a "wacky" news story, it's a pretty shitty and depressing one.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 19:17 (twenty years ago)

Dear Jorel,

I live in California, so when I go to NY and stay in Manhattan, I have plans. Going out to Williamsburg is not a good plan. Going to some bar that frowns on cursing and hitting on women is not a good plan either.

That's what I get for defending you!

Who did release magic family out from the base of $499 (deangulberry), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 19:20 (twenty years ago)

I can't even read this news story! I don't even know what it is! (xp)

Who did release magic family out from the base of $499 (deangulberry), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 19:21 (twenty years ago)

Dearest DeanerWeiner,

My bar is in Manhattan. The rules aren't really in effect unless the owner's there. You're still a wuss.

Love,

Jorel

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 19:23 (twenty years ago)

Neither article delves too deeply into what the festival's actual origins or what the practice is. The newsier of the two claims they sing "traditional" songs, which means what?

Huk-L, Tuesday, 1 March 2005 19:25 (twenty years ago)

"my old kentucky home" before they changed the lyrics! ha.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 19:27 (twenty years ago)

but why is cowley the "alabama of britain"? (it's an industrial satellite town of oxford and nowhere near padstow) (it used to be known for union militancy)

(maybe there's another one)

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 19:35 (twenty years ago)

Well, no proof of snuff films, I suppose then we'll have to just settle for bitching out rural townies that have offensive traditions of putting on makeup that makes them look like members of another ethnic group.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 19:38 (twenty years ago)

there are a few brit villages with weird festival days which go back many hundred years — this does sound more ersatz and recent

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 19:38 (twenty years ago)

Well, I guess it's slightly more acceptable than that Wicker Man nonsense.

Huk-L, Tuesday, 1 March 2005 19:40 (twenty years ago)

but hey people who talk through movies and lousy roommates are more pressing societal ills, i totally agree.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 19:42 (twenty years ago)

i wz trying to remember the name of the village where the ObbY Oss rides, that's in those parts (or anyway closer than Cowley)

i'd say the guy who wrote the article has at least as much of a stereotypes problem

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 19:43 (twenty years ago)

timH and robin carmody to thread :(

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 19:45 (twenty years ago)

fair enough! no offense taken.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 19:55 (twenty years ago)

but hey people who talk through movies and lousy roommates are more pressing societal ills, i totally agree.

Pity we can't use the Wicker Man treatment on them.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 19:56 (twenty years ago)

we should try the burning man treatment, ie. get a bunch of nerds together in the desert.

oh wait.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 19:57 (twenty years ago)

Read some Gorky Park lyrics.

Leon the Fatboy (Ex Leon), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 20:04 (twenty years ago)

I do not want to see naked desert nerds, that's why I fear ever opening a "what do you look like" thread

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Tuesday, 1 March 2005 20:07 (twenty years ago)

A lot of people refer to tradions of 'guising; often a late winter festival, sometimes associated with shrove tuesday, ash wednesday or lent. Where people used to black up with soot and make arses of themselves mainly because come the backside of winter their is nothing truly crazy that people won't do. The Padstow festival seems to be a bit of a more modern aberration.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 20:10 (twenty years ago)

In Scotland "guising" is what Americans call "trick or treat". Not that anyone realises anymore that America didn't invent Halloween.

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 20:12 (twenty years ago)

woah - do the english really think americans invented halloween? that's crazy!

j blount (papa la bas), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 20:13 (twenty years ago)

america DID invent the kinder gentler halloween! in the good old days, "trick or treat" wz known as "cook us supper or we'll burn yr house down"

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 20:16 (twenty years ago)

And you wonder why everyone cool left.

Huk-L, Tuesday, 1 March 2005 20:17 (twenty years ago)

"everyone cool" = pilgrims with their awesome hats

Huk-L, Tuesday, 1 March 2005 20:17 (twenty years ago)

all the xtians left!

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 20:18 (twenty years ago)

in detroit they still do that, only minus the 'cook us supper or' part

j blount (papa la bas), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 20:18 (twenty years ago)

the pilgrims were assholes

j blount (papa la bas), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 20:18 (twenty years ago)

woah - do the english really think americans invented halloween? that's crazy!

I'm not English so I can't speak for them but there seems to be a mistaken notion that "trick or treat" is an American innovation

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 20:19 (twenty years ago)

The pilgrims invented rock, I read so in Mad.

Huk-L, Tuesday, 1 March 2005 20:19 (twenty years ago)

you forgot lady godiva's horse!!

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 20:20 (twenty years ago)

pilgrims (on arrival): "cook us turkey AND we'll burn your continent down"

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 20:22 (twenty years ago)

I'm going to burn Blount's house down.

Leon the Fatboy (Ex Leon), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 20:26 (twenty years ago)

you forgot lady godiva's horse!!

Maybe, but what she wore wouldn't make a very good Halloween costume.

j.lu (j.lu), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 20:28 (twenty years ago)

It was a flesh coloured bodysuit, she fooled you all

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 20:29 (twenty years ago)

o no! nicole are you mayflower offspring?

j blount (papa la bas), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 20:34 (twenty years ago)

Nicole Biddle-Barrows!

Huk-L, Tuesday, 1 March 2005 20:36 (twenty years ago)

So what next? Fourth of July is an ancient Welsh fertility festival?

America invented EVERYTHING>>> !!

andy --, Tuesday, 1 March 2005 20:38 (twenty years ago)

fourth of july is my mum's b'day!! :p

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 20:41 (twenty years ago)

I hate the pilgrims, but the detroit jokes got old a long time ago.
